Could tournament really be cancelled?

I laughed when I read this. Then I saw who wrote it and that explained it. You really have a hard on for me. Smile...it's almost spring.
we all know who's racist and it isn't me---runs in your family????

which is why you make contingency plans 2 weeks ago.. so you don't have to do it on 3 days notice

you figure out what is possible.. you plan it on contingency and you have a drop-dead date where you can no longer trigger it

I thought you were speaking about actual possibilities and not just hypotheticals of what should have been done a while ago.

Saw this one CNBC.

4:46 pm: NCAA faces pressure to hold March Madness without fans
The National College Players Association has called on the NCAA to consider holding the March Madness tournament without an audience present to protect athletes and prevent the spread of coronavirus. The association also called on the NCAA to cancel events such as meet-and-greets as well as press events, which put athletes in contact with crowds. -- Kimball

Georgio Armani did that in Milan last week for fashion week. Models ran the runway without an audience out of coronavirus fears:

I just had this conversation with someone this morning. We imagined that RU finally gets into the tourney and either we have to fly to Spokane, Washington...where Washington is a hot bed of coronavirus or the tourney gets cancelled totally.
it would be proof that God really does hate Rutgers.
Last week I told someone that Rutgers is finally good in basketball for the first time since I was in college. So the Apocalypse must be drawing near.

Its racist to single out asians in reference to the virus. You can ignore that or act like it's a joke. It's not a joke to those whose businesses have suffered by these types of racist "jokes" and those asians who feel singled out

JFC dude let it go

Never said you were racists --questioned if it runs in rocks family. Note the??? But it may be true. Apologize to you What a laugh. Just stop by the current events board. There's a whole list of those you should apologize to. But who wants or needs that from you or your ilk-- your bros comment is racist. By the way many of Italian heritage frequent casinos I'm one of them

By the way you need training by HR. Your attacks on senior citizens is discriminating. But hey you do that all the time. You have no ability to recognize your prejudices

is it a joke or simply a fact that the virus came from China and the overwhelming majority of infections are currently in people residing in Asia and travel restrictions are/were initially focused on China.

This is likely if there are >1000 cases by next Monday, which is quite possible - and financially, this hurts the host towns, but not the income stream, that much, since the vast majority of the income is from TV. I seriously hope they don't do this, as I intend to go to every tourney game RU is in, assuming we still make it, but safety and liability avoidance tends to trump everything these days.

Really, really hate being right about this, as I was going to attend any NCAA game RU was in, but it was pretty obvious to me even over a week ago, that we were headed towards over 1000 cases before yesterday and that that would engender the public safety response we're seeing. It's also pretty clear to me that we'll be over 5000 cases by a week from now, given the acceleration of testing and cases, and if we are, that could even threaten the tournament, just like how in Italy no sporting events are being held, fans or no, as they're trying to lock down everything.

As I've been saying in the main coronavirus thread on the football board, given the bungling of infection testing by the CDC, I fear we're on an Italy trajectory in densely populated regions like DC to Boston (more densely populated than Italy and we're doing worse on testing/social distancing than they are) vs. being on a South Korea trajectory to controlling the outbreak, which they're close to achieving, primarily due to very proactive aggressive testing and social distancing.

I truly hope I'm wrong on all of this as what's going on there is horrific right now, with over 12,000 cases and 827 deaths (and accelerating on both counts) and a completely overwhelmed health care system leaving people untreated and dying, while the rest of the country is in lockdown. I should note that there are two other things on our side that could help us here: first is the potential for seasonality of this virus (thread below contains a link to a study indicating it might be seasonal), which could lead to significantly decreased transmission rates very soon as it gets warmer and more humid, and the fact that the US is much younger than Italy, although we still have a decent percentage of folks over 70/80.

Don't feel guilty about being correct. We all, everyone in this country, should have taken this very seriously from the start and demanded a disciplined response. Even if we were al wrong, it was the right thing to do. Like evacuating the coast in front of a dangerous hurricane or tsunami warning.

Minimize this thing ASAP and rush the anti-viral medicines. Get the long-term picture straight away and DEMAND that big pharma bring back medicine manufacturing to this country... or form a pool with western democracies to do it.

Just saw them say even the Big Ten tourney will be without audiences staring tomorrow.

Tourny gonna be cancelled. Called this Weeks ago.

oh well. Public safety >>>>>>>sports

It's going to be cancelled. Pro sports aren't going on hiatus while college kids who dont get paid entertain the nation.

the nba is doing is because a player tested positive. There is no guarantee other sports leagues will do the same.

note I’m not saying they WON’T. But it isn’t 100% at least

I bet there will unfortunately be NCAA players who have it. They are around a lot more people on a daily basis. At class, on campus, and socially.

It is what it is ...it started in Hubei ( Wuhan) ...not racist just a FACT...China is not our friend ...a Communist , Marxist , Taoist nation of 1.5 billion who are an after thought of their party leaders... knowing China they probably sent thousands here to spread the virus ... what a great weapon... another apologist from the liberal front ru66.

That’s why most of our cases are from people returning from Italy.

I get the sense so many want to “just be right”

Well, when you have a bunch of people here telling others this was no big thing.. the tourney wouldn't be played without audiences.. that we won't be seeing mandatory quarantines of large populations, that all kinds of events will not be canceled.. it could just be a public service to rub it in.. because those are teh people who travel and infect everyone else

Bossert also said Americans have to prepare to be out of their daily rhythms for weeks:

"How long? Epidemiologists suggest eight weeks might be needed to arrest this outbreak. Administrators, students, teachers and parents need to get busy figuring out how to continue the education of our children while contributing to this community-wide public health effort."

I guess we'll get to see what they can do in a week. But if they were smart.. they could have started planning awhile ago to see what is feasible.. and that would be part of the calculation in deciding what to announce.

A little bit guilty of that, but surely you can understand that it can be a little frustrating to be pretty confident you know what's going to happen, but have more than a few folks think you're overreacting or being an idiot at the time. With hoops it's largely meaningless, but with the actual coronavirus situation, it makes it a lot tougher to try to reach people who need to be convinced that this is a serious situation and act accordingly.

I truly hope I'm wrong and we come through this without horrible outcomes because the experts missed some detail (like maybe things will slow down significantly in the next few weeks with warmer/wetter weather, which could happen but is hard to count in). I'd far rather be wrong and there be much less impact, but with what I know I feel compelled to push people as hard as I can to act to prevent what could very well be pretty damn catastrophic impacts in these parts. Here and on FB (and elsewhere).

Actually, most of our cases, especially newer ones, are coming from community spread if we go at the current rate, we'll be doubling cases every 2-3 days, such that we could be at 7000-8000 in a week and over 100,000 in 2-3 weeks - especially if we aren't a lot more aggressive with testing (jury is out) and social distancing (really starting to kick in now).
