I know there were similar demonstrations at NB and Newark, but I don't know if they got this much coverage. Notice that football has become the scapegoal -- and that the University's response is, I think, weak. It ought to be emphasizing how much of the money comes from private sources and the University's efforts to reduce the subsidy of the programs.

faculty union rally

The article is total trash. Flood's salary is PRIVATELY funded- at least the increase.

Why should RU have to explain itself- again- to people with PhDs?

Frankly anyone who can't figure out what the B1G will do for RU isn't worthy of employment at a community college.

This is a prime reason why Athletics needs to be self-sufficient (taking nothing beyond student fees from the University). Otherwise, no matter how small the subsidy, there will be those who will point to the money spent on athletics as better spent elsewhere.

I get that the faculty union wants to get more money for professors. And I get that even if the money spent on athletics were spread out, and everyone got a $500 raise, it wouldn't make or break them, but they'd still take the extra $500.

However, it is not like Rutgers professors are poorly compensated. Despite the claim by Chris Filter that his salary is comparable to a high school teacher's salary, the average salary for a professor at Rutgers-Camden is in the 97-99th percentile for similar institutions. For Newark, the average professor salary is in the 90-97th percentile. And while New Brunswick lags somewhat, average salaries are still way above the median of similar institutions at the 69-85th percentile

Does the UC-San Diego faculty do the same with regard to Cal's expenditures?

I rhink Upstream is right. The University ought to be saying that joining the B1G is designed to cut or eliminate the subsidy. It might also say that revenue sports like football help to support olympic sports, which even football-hating faculty members approve of.. The faculty does deserve explanations --they don't follow this stuff like we do and what happens does affect them -- and RU ought to be doing a better job of it.

According to the university's priorities, Fitter said, "We need more 6-foot-6 illiterates to chase balls around a field."

What an a$$hole. This guy should be reprimanded for a comment like that.

This article is total garbage considering Flood's contract extension was privately funded by donors.

Let's explore Fitter's argument.

He makes $90k and has been teaching for English for 21 years at Rutgers Camden.

He gets summers off?

He teaches 2 classes a term?

He teaches English.

His benefits and retirement are pretty good.

Hasn't he chosen a way of life?

Doesn't supply/demand determine the salaries...

Aren't colleges competing for big time rainmaker professors in grant/research generating areas?

$90k seems about right....maybe $100k....

I wonder if he thinks he should be making $130k? $150k? Maybe at Harvard?

I've never met him, but I'm surprised he makes that little. Look at the table Upstream posted.

BTW, he really doesn't get summers off; he needs to use them to research his books and articles so that he can get the next merit increase that comes along. (There hasn't been one in some years, but the university is talking about having one or two annual merit increases in the next contract with AAUP.)

Would love to see a guy like Brandon Renkart (3.75 Engineering GPA) pen a response. Just responding with the usual ARP is not enough.

LawProf - I noticed that his salary is very low compared to the Rutgers Camden average. I'm not really sure why that would be, considering he has 21 years tenure.

As I said above, I can't understand it either. Remind me, Upstream: do your figures include the law and business school? If so, perhaps the discrepancy can be explained on the basis of his not being in either school.

As far as I can tell, the data includes all of Rutgers Camden, which would mean Law & Business too.

I get that he is an English prof, so he commands a lower salary than a professional school prof or a STEM prof. But his salary is 65% of the Average. For an English prof with 20+ years, that still seems low. I wonder what the deal is with him.

I shot off an email to various contacts at Rutgers including him voicing my displeasure and embarrassment at his comments.

Would like to see if I get a response from that @sswipe.

A walkon who paid to go to school here probably isnt a great example to drag out.

I looked at the Asbury Park Press Data Universe site, and he is the second lowest-paid full professor in the Camden English department. All the other English professors make $15K to $40K more than him.

Upstream, can you supply a link? I'm having trouble reaching the Rutgers data base, in part because of how poorly the site is laid out.

I'm talking about the "illiterates" comment. But even the AA teams have scholarship athletes (which is probably lost on this professor but still)...
