Well for 26 minutes, RU competed and showed they belong on the court with Michigan State. Some elite defense, resiliency, and dare I say some toughness had RU taking it to Sparty by the 14 minute timeout of the 2nd half. RU was up 36-35 after a nifty Mag drive finishing off a 14-3 RU run that left the Rutgers faithful thinking they had a real shot at stealing this one on the road. Then it all fell apart. Do not know what Izzo said in the timeout but that was a different Spartan team from there on out. MSU had been playing into Rutgers fans by getting frustrated and settling for the outside shot On consecutive plays they worked the ball inside to Malik Hall and he made RU pay. Those little two plays plus better ball movement was just the tonic to throw a wrinkle to the RU D allowing Sparty to get some really open looks to pop from the outside with 3 treys in 4 offensive possessions. Meanwhile RU comitted a bevy of errors including an embarrassing ill fate move by J Mike on the fast break RU went 7 minutes without a fg which topped the last 6 minutes of the first half without a fg. .Before the comedy of errors was over, Michigan State was on a 19-0 putting them up 54-36 and it was good night Irene. Game over before the 9 minute mark.

Time for the last holdouts to accept reality. Copy and paste from prior recaps. This is not a NCAA or probably any post season team. Team does not have Big 10 starting talent. Pike got killed by the losses of Cam and Paul. Pike had too many recruiting mistakes over past 2-3 cycles. Rutgers is simply not good enough. Yes Pike can work his magic and can have RU playing very good defense at times and exploiting the weaknesses of his opponents. It worked vs Indiana and RU may or may not be better. Unfortunately there just is not enough there to carry them through within games. A trademark of RU 2023-24 is having 5 to as much as 7 minute stretches not being able to even make a field goal. Like they did in another Big 10 game (cant think off my head) RU had TWO of these stretches. Cannot win in the Big 10 with such lack of offensive talent and this team is as bad offensively as any RU team since Fred Hill. Pike's narrow path to win is threading the needle keeping games in the 50s and low 60s. That worked for a time today but when MSU elevated their game, Rutgers had no answer. The lack of leadership plays a role there but sometimes its just the talent. Losing by 18 in the manner they did should not surprise anyone.

Michigan State had been underperforming at times this year but this is a very very good team. RU losing by 18 isnt surprising. They blew out top 20 Baylor and dismantled Penn State by 30. Izzo is a great coach. He has been trying to find consistency with his team and managed to get the most out of his team as the game wore on. Its not just about RU not being good, Give credit to Izzo, give credit to their players. They could have not stepped up and maybe this game goes down to the wire. In the end they are just better, better talent, better shooting, better coaching and a much higher ceiling right now than Rutgers.

Where to go from here. Well its about developing next year where Pike will be held to fulfilling ENORMOUS expecations. But getting through this year will not be easy given the makeup of the team. The team is so limited, that you just cannot play the youngest of players all the time because not sure its a good look to lose by 30 a game. Its a mess and has been a mess from the start. We talk about what can be done and lineup tweaks and I just do think that changes anything Getting Ogbole to play minutes will not move any needles. That is just reality. Austin Williams certainly has earned his minutes but its bargainning. He is only capable of so much on a team where the 5 position is a black hole and the guards are shooting at a 25% clip for the season. Oskar playing 15 or 5 minute will not change the bottom line. It is what it is. It is not fixable for 2023-2024. The best thing is to just fast forward to the end of this season and hope Pike hits the portal in a needed way to construct a lineup that will compliment what Ace and Dylan are bringing next year.

I have said for a few weeks now, expect most games will be a 20 point loss. We have no alpha leading the team, poor guards, poor center play and new comers mostly disappointing. It is what it is. I will take a bad year given what Pike has done in his first 8 years. No one should have any semblance of expectations still. Their season will end day 1 or 2 of the BTT.

They are just so offensively challenged. The roster is bad. Not that I think it matters but when did he flush the plan to become more of transition team? Maybe when it was clear nobody can finish around the rim?

Yes exactly where did that plan go, and also what happened to the full court press? It’s worked great so many times getting us 10s violations including today, and teams have rarely beaten it for easy dunks as far as i can remember.

Play the young players more. They will not lose any remaining games by 30, nor will it be a bad enough look for Harper and Ace to decommitt. Don't play Noah AT ALL. Give Woolf more of Cliff's minutes, as, barring transfer, he will be expected to be a servicable backup next year, plus, at this stage, there isn't much of a difference between them. Definitely play GG more than Oskar for the same reason. Also, play Ogbole a lot when he is ready. Cliff is not a part of the future, and he's just brutal. Again, we won't lose any games by 30.

Can’t set up press if you don’t score.

Good review per usual but refusal to acknowledge officiating is comical.
2 questionable fouls to Cliff in the first half. And equally true on those two plays that the fouls should have been called on MSU.
2 quick fouls on Hyatt. Leading scorer fouls out.
Both miss significant time.
MSU in one & one early.
RU never gets there.
RU doesn’t shoot foul shots in first half until less than 3 minutes left in the half.
Cliff gets clobbered in nether regions no call.
Announcers at half time literally say the play of the first half was where MSU player pushes Oskar out of the way, doesn’t get called for obvious foul, and hits a three.
Oskar tossed around, no calls, MSU over the back and pushing. So many no calls on MSU.

Firmly believe if fair officiating we have a lead and then a demoralized and an MSU feeling the screws tightened.
Instead a confident team where you know the home team is going to make a run.

Substation pattern hurt us. Insertion of backup guards hurt us in first half last five minutes and their run in the 2nd started with the insertion of the backup guards. Maybe rotations do have to be cut down.

We played hard. Effort was there. Cliff for all his offensive faults is still a force defensively.
Fernandes three was pretty. Obviously has a nice stroke. So frustrating.
We so miss Paul and Cam.

Sometimes tough love with players is needed to clear the roster for next season The team has played 17 games and its rather obvious the flaws can't be corrected with the current roster.I would encourage fans to watch Dylan Harper at 5:30 pm on ESPN 2 to get a prelude to next season when Rutgers will have offensive talent on the court.

Its makes sense to use the full court press to create turnovers and easy layups for baskets. The half court offense doesn't function at a high level when there is so little scoring from the guards and the center position.

Agree.

I expected a combined 20 ppg from Fernandes + Gavin. The wily veteran PG 3 pt shooter and the hot shooting freshman. Unfortunetely that ship appears to have sailed, for now.

Activate J Williams if he becomes available. This group needs new blood.

Meanwhile, in Champaign, Maryland is about to upset #10 Illinois.
big win for Maryland.....shaky start to season with better talent than RU returning....defense is his trademark and that was gutsy going into Champaign and coming away with a huge quality road win. They still have alot of work to do but its a step in right direction for them

Rinse and repeat. These recaps are going to be a ghost town by the end of the season.

Sadly, spot on! Wash, rinse, repeat . . .

The fact that we consistently miss layups is mind boggling. However, we are not bad in the fast break. Where we look like a CYO team is in the half court O. Drives me nuts and makes me miss Geo Baker and Ron Harper even more.

The only hope is that reports of J Will being the best player on the team are accurate and not BS and he becomes eligible
I am not buying those reports. I tend to go with your mention of possible BS. Other reports said we would be a fast tempo, good 3 point shooting, and high scoring team. Other reports said Noah would bring scoring and good shooting as a strong transfer out of the portal. Other reports said Gavin might lead the team in scoring, or possibly be the second leading scorer. Those reports are not true. At this point we should have learned to not believe the reports. Let’s see him play with our own eyes in actual games and then make a judgment on him.

and I think Cliff may have been open to the side of him

For an upperclassman who has had success in the league Cliff gets a terrible whistle. Yes, he has a dumb one here or there but he gets called for stuff that other big guys don’t.
Cliff has zero offensive moves close to the basket. That’s what’s killing Cliff. He relied to much on Paul getting him alley oops. He is fantastic on D but is one dimensional at this point.

The half court offense was still mediocre but Baker and Harper could create shots off the dribble.

It’s not happening this year boys

and I think Cliff may have been open to the side of him
Watch again. The center slid over at the last second which should have prompted JMike to throw lob for Cliff and side step defender. Bad freshman mistake that hopefully one session of tape corrects. He has a lot of talent and no fear just has to be smarter , pass more , and emphasize passes to wings and center. This has to improve with all the guards.

I like the recap and MSU has 9 4 or 5* kids on their roster.....that doesn't include Walker, who has a 5th year of eligibility like most kids.

On the RU side, if you count Cliff as 1, Gavin as 2 and Hyatt as 3, that is your overall summary.

Cliff just isn't battling enough for quality post position and he plays solid defense, but still makes underclassmen style mistakes.

The scoring margin in East Lansing was 70-57......today was 73-55.....I know it doesn't seem like much, but the talent gap isn't that wide from the starters. The issue is our bench players on the road are not contributing like they could at home.

The game is not overly complicated....the 2nd chance 3s in the 1st half, all got buried by MSU. The teams that capture those rebounds when Cliff had 2 fouls, would have kept Sparty from a 28-22 lead, but 22 points in any half of a conference game is not winning anywhere.

I am somewhat surprised that RU was in the game after going down by 9 in the 1st minute of the 2H.....it could have gotten to 12 to 15 very quickly......instead, it kept battling and got all the way back to a lead, which showed me something.

Do I think Ogbole could have grabbed 2 rebounds that prevented a couple of those 2nd chance 3s by Sparty.....?? Maybe or maybe not.....

Do I think the mention of Jeremiah Williams and Ogbole by Andy Katz during the broadcast was somewhat interesting?? Maybe but it's not enough for some fans who want immediate results.

In theory, Illinois with Terrance Shannon, at Ohio State, at Iowa and at MSU was going to be 4 losses with any recent RU team, good, solid or not so great. The 4 losses are somewhat expected, but the schedule is what it is.

I am not off the bandwagon, but I understand those who will jump off and stay off until they see Ace Bailey and Dylan Harper......the reality is, there were decent shots and layups missed, yet again.....so while fans believe the coaching of offense isn't there, we can't make layups for Cliff or Woolfolk or others as well.

The talent is on the way and while some aren't sold on what happened today, there are signs that we are closer, IF we can find a quality 10 to 14 minutes off the bench from at least 3 players.

A) Someone to grab a rebound when Cliff isn't in the game.

B) Someone able to prevent guards from getting into the paint and can take an opponents guard into the paint and score with a mid-range.

C) Find a path that requires Gavin Griffiths to rebound and run a play or two for him, as a primary scoring choice off the bench.

The positives were quality shots taken and made by Mag and Hyatt.....and there's something there to go to, with Austin Williams. I just think he would be the perfect 6th or 7th man off the bench, to bring RU 6 to 8 PPG.

Woolfolk making 4 FTs is also something to draw from, but if you count his layups missed, there's another 6 points missing from the sets we run.

Onto Nebraska and it's going to take 75+ points to win IMO.....gotta figure its a game to get some players who aren't scoring (Noah, Cliff and Griffiths) off the dock and moving forward.

Once they get their confidence and momentum, there's a ton of upside still left to play for.

Unfortunately, I don't think we see RU scoring 75 points in a game for the rest of the year. Other point on today's game, there were at least 4 egregious walks by MSU right in front of ref's that were not called.

You want a startling stat before today's game.

We are averaging 65.8 FG attempts in conference, 1st
We are 13th in makes, 24.0.

Mag 5.0/13.0 38.5%, 5/9 vs Mich St
Derek 3.9/10.8 34.8%, 2/6
Hyatt 3.5/9.5 35.8%, 4/9
AWill 3.5/5.8 60.9%, 2/5
***Cliff 2.0/6.8 29.6%, 2/5*** FG 8-27, 10-32 after today
JMike 2.3/7.3 31.0%, 2/5
Noah 2.0/5.8 34.8%, 1/6
Gavin 1.3/5.8 21.7%, 0/2
Woolf 1.3/2.5 50%, 1/4
Oscar 0.8/2.0 37.5%, 1/3

Today, FG 20-54

They have to slow down and work for good shots instead of the first open shot.

Cliff has zero offensive moves close to the basket. That’s what’s killing Cliff. He relied to much on Paul getting him alley oops. He is fantastic on D but is one dimensional at this point.
It's painful to watch. As the coach, Pike should have understood this when evaluating Paul v. Noah.

It’s frustrating to watch but can’t imagine as a player. I think Cliff picked up his 2nd foul after a non-call on a dunk.

The first foul on Cliff was a result of a missed call as well and should have never happened either.

The Mich state kid wrapped/hooked his arm around Cliff to get by him to the basket and it should have been an offensive foul.

With that said Cliff continuously gets himself into foul trouble with dumb fouls.

The reason we don’t have a bench of 3 players is because we have 2 more starting spots to fill than we thought we would (due to the late departure of a couple players).

Is this Hawk finally (although indirectly) admitting that we actually miss the couple kids who transferred at the last minute?!?!

Kinda disagree. Not with stats. Many of the shots are good shots just can’t hit them. Not an issue of shot selection IMHO. Well there was the Davis full court one on five shot and the obligatory, wow what confidence! comments. Strange I was taught in second grade to never do that. You wonder why some posters flip?
