@kyk1827 Im not being a jerk, I truly want to understand what you mean when you say this. He’s had back to back double digit conference win seasons and was two minutes from a sweet 16. What exactly is the very low ceiling? Is it National title or bust?
I wouldn’t be surprised if with 14 or 10 minutes to go in a half you have a package where you play zone for 2 minutes + the next whistle.
We made the fouls. We got beat over and over on the floor and when that happens you foul. We are slow and hence we foul a lot more than the other guys.
why do we insist on Paul and Caleb taking shots early. I asked this after game 2. Is it to get them going...its not working. Paul did come alive and he is coming around but in general it isnt helping us get out to leads

You do realize they have a bunch of transfers. 3 guys carried over from last season of the guys that actually play and one of them didn't play much as the explained last year because of when he arrived. It's a complete different roster
I just don’t think they’re that good. Plenty of length but no quickness. Our quickest player is our 6-11 center but he’s not as quick when he’s sitting in the bench in foul trouble. If either Geo or Ron have an off game offensively we have zero chance to win. There’s no reliable third scorer. I want Hyatt to play more but his shooting numbers are quietly crappy also. Sigh.
Probably because the other teams are goading them into shooting. Wouldn’t you? But it should be a point of emphasis by Pike that they need to look for Ron and to a lesser extent Geo every trip.
Nailed it! Said to my friends that this team lacks the on-ball defense Pike would like to see in a man to man setting. We are much better off in a zone which would help with rebounding as well. Sad that I can notice this but our coach can’t.

Yes. All of that is effort. It simply hasn’t been there to start the season. That’s on the coaching staff. They need to find the right buttons to push.
4-11 today but he did get 8 boards. I think the issue is he can be very good in a team ball setting, unfortunately we are not playing team ball. He needs to be starting to put our best foot forward and to play exclusively with the other starters. Unfortunately Pike is doing such a bad job here
This is easy to say. Are there rotations that do make sense? Shack hits the nail on the head. If we insist on playing man RIGHT NOW we are very limited.
where I very respectfully disagree with Shack is that I am not pulling the plug on my base D and the identity of Rutgers basketball. The thought of playing zone ran across my mind multiple times watching the game.
Jones was god awful defensively. He was picked on and abused. However it isn’t like others were good individually.
Cliff is the key here. Pike will her the team to defend the line better. I know it. That puts the weight of our entire defense on Cliff. That might be an unrealistic ask.
Effort is 95% on the players. These are Big Ten players, they shouldn’t have to be motivated
You literally have no idea what their work effort or attitude are and are just inferring it from game results.
Excellent points! One similarity Pike has with Schiano is stubbornness however. Can Pike implement a change in defense now or during the season?
Unfortunately, that’s where you’d be wrong. Eddie Jordan treated his squad like NBA players. Thought they’d condition and motivate themselves all on their own. It was a disaster. These are college kids. They need direction. That’s why college coaches employ sports psychologists. It helps them find out how they’re players tick so they can get the most out of them. Pike needs to get the most out of his guys. Right now, it’s not happening.
It's worrisome Cliff can't stay on the court against DePaul. What happens when B1G games start?
For the 3rd straight year our most important player is our starting center. Cliff staying out of foul trouble is everything.
They could be the hungriest team in the world and if they played like this you would say the same thing.

some guys seem to be looking to play team ball.. to move without the ball.. to look to pass.. others seem to decide to shoot and anything they need to do beforehand to get off that shot... and even worse than that is that we have players treating the ones looking to play team offense as if they are going to shoot no matter what.. so they are just standing around...
think of Paul's awkward pas to Geo before Geo hit a three along out bench sideline. paul was clearly moving toward Geo with the ball.. and Geo just stood there in the corner, closely guarded.. paul awkward pass forced Geo to more up the sideline to catch it.. but he should have been on the way there as soon as Paul came towards him and his man didn't go help on Paul.. how many times are we going to see ball handlers look around to pass only to see everyone standing around?
Add to that only half the players help on D or look to switch.. too late they see that a teammate picking up the guy they lost has a man now free to roam and maybe they should look to pick him up or box him out..
I don’t think the effort criticism is fair. That’s a predictable refrain after any loss. Sure there could be a play here or there where someone doesn’t chase down rebound or something but there is usually always fight. Teams that aren’t making effort get blown out and Pike’s teams always play it to the final horn. I don’t think horrendous offense can be blamed on effort. Hard to explain the fouling other than we just don’t have good on ball defenders. Also not intimidating anyone under the hoop. I think Hyatt is our best shot blocker which is not a good thing. Also not going to blame DePaul pulling three pointers from 30 feet out of their asses in the last 3 minutes on lack of effort.

Did you reply to the wrong message? I said this was on Pike. But, as others have noted, Jaden was a complete liability on defense tonight. I understand sitting him. The problem is, he wasn’t the only one not defending their best or hitting the glass. Not enough effort from anybody, aside from Hyatt maybe.
This proves my point. You are just inferring the "hunger" from the result. It's actually possible to try, be "hungry", and still lose. Your thoughts on the effort level literally add no information I couldn't have gotten from looking at the box score.
Hungry teams that have no shooters or clue on offense do. Mediocre teams lose to crap teams on the road all the time.
