There has been some questioning of Pikiell and that’s fair but this team is just missing open shots. The difference today was Maryland hit open shots which opened up driving lanes and they just pulled away. RU missed those same shots and Maryland just packed it in. Guys need to start hitting the open ones or Pike is going to have to find guys that do.

Absolutely. I knew we were in trouble up six early on when Geo missed an open three from one of his favorite spots. When that ball clanged off the back of the rim, I knew Geo was still not right, even though he had made a three from longer range. A good shooter needs to hit those shots as Maryland did all afternoon. It's bad enough when we take ill-time shots, but when the kid's are open they need to knock those shots down. And if they're having trouble hitting threes then they need to move inside the lines and hit make-able two's.

Part of the issue is we don’t get square and go straight up and straight down. Thiam drifts all over the place. Gio drifts too much, o has starting leaning on shots. Square your feet and go straight up and down. If we don’t do this we will not make anything. If you can’t get it off with proper form drive the damn thing.

Not about squaring feet , it’s about squaring shooting shoulder on release . All of the best shooters actually turn their feet when they shoot , watch Steph curry . Problem is definitely drifting on shots and rushing as well .

I consider squaring feet to the basket part of the process. Yes shoulders need to be square and is more important to your point. Less athletic guys who aren’t great shooters have trouble getting shoulders square if their feet aren’t set.

These are problems with basic shooting fundamentals. Players who are good shooters master those. Players who don't are bad shooters who miss wide open shots.

Don’t disagree but even bad shooters can hit a higher percentage if they have some discipline

If only we had four former guards on the coaching staff.

The reason missing open shots is so important is that Rutgers has no go to shooter right now which results in long scoring droughts. Its a near impossibility to catch up especially against a opponent like Maryland which has a nice blend of inside/outside scoring. This isn't a new problem but rather a continuation going back to Big East days when Rutgers rarely had more than one/two shooters on the court at the same time.

We can’t hit open two or threes.

We definitely miss more 10 footers than most other teams. All the nifty moves don't mean much if you can't make the shot. These look like normal jumpers not adjusted shots. Doesn't seem to matter who takes them either.

I think back to the game where Douby and Shields went 0-19 from three against a MEAC team. I see Laurent leading the A-10 in 3pt%. It makes me wonder if Larry Bird put a shooters hex on the RAC after he lost here in '78.

they are a bad bunch of shooters period, they will not always shoot this bad but lets not kid ourselves on the ceiling of the shooting ability of this team

I still have a great deal of confidence Harper will turn it around. He's too good of a shooter. He'll find his groove soon enough.

he's the key IMHO

btw...the last couple of years, the team trending higher towards the end of the season with FT shooting. let's hope that happens with the 3 pt shooting. my prediction is we're going to win a couple of games we shouldn't because we make 3s. Yep...I said it.

bookmark this post. it's gonna happen.

For all our analyzing, criticizing, tweaking, complaining, and hand wringing the six words of OP title better than anything else sum things up. Making shots solves a shttload of problems.
