Then give me Hurley.

There's no way he can keep acting nuts there and they'll put up w/it, bc when he stops winning (you can't win every year), he'll likely wear out his welcome
Have to assume if that happens, he'll get humbled (one can hope), and if Pike doesn't turn things around here, that will correspond perfectly with Danny taking over

This is assuming Pike doesn't turn things around - obviously, I hope he does
Also assumes Danny calms down - TBD on that as well

But it makes too much sense
Jersey guy, going to a program in need of a bball version of Schiano, much less pressure than UConn, coached by a proven winner at every level who learned his lesson the hard way and is a changed man (but still has that fire and wins big)

We tried to hire Hurley but he demanded an 8 year contract that Hobbs refused. I can't criticize that decision but in hindsight.........

Hopefully if he mellows out and gets humbled, and given his success and cashing in financially in at UConn, he might become more Pitino-like in his approach and financial demands

I don't see this in the cards. Anyway, he's so arrogant and brash, I don't really want him as our coach.
This is why we're Rutgers.

Our fanbase is too good for Pitino and Hurley

We brag about having the best 15 win teams ever seen at Rutgers.

We compare Rutgers teams to past Rutgers teams.

And you all wonder why we are a joke in the athletic world and constantly get mocked.

I'm about winning
Plain and simple

Absent of a Penn State or Baylor type situation (child rape and murder), I support doing what needs to be done in order to win, win consistently and win big

Hurley isn't a chrior boy
He's a winner - and right now, here OTB, we desperately need a winner

You are the winner! Most ridiculous post of the post season. Congratulations!

This is what I don't get -why is this so far-fetched to some of you?
Are you ok w/missing the tourney the last 3 years, having 2 top 5 picks and playing awful bball, simply b/c Pike's a nice guy?

UConn is a decent school in northeastern CT, a few miles from the Mass border, who has won numerous titles in bball
Why can't we do the same here?

We have advantages they can only dream of, yet expectations a fraction of theirs.
I simply don't get it

Hurley was offered the Lakers coaching job last offseason and turned it down to stay at UConn. He’s won back to back national championships at a school with a rich basketball tradition where hoops is the sole focus. And you don’t understand why the idea of him coming here is far fetched?

Do you know why he turned it down?
On the surface, it looked like a no brainer

It's NBA vs. college though
Night and day
Hell, K turned it down as well when people thought he was going there

Maybe it's important for him to have his family on the east coast
His parents are here, he's from here, maybe that trumps money and prestige

Remember, the guy's dad turned down numerous overtures to say at St. Ants
Danny wanted more than HS, but nobody knows what his true motives are in regard to his career aspirations

God forbid we have fans that think big
Dream big
Want big

You're a former athlete here
Blood, sweat and tears OTB
Gave it your all

You know the potential we have here
Yet we, as a fan base, are consistently ok w/mediocrity
Drives me crazy

If they bring Jon Wooden back to life, then give me him.

Why's it delusional?

We're getting B1G money from the conference to pay him
Guy has won big everywhere
UConn pressure is massive
Ours is a fraction
He's a jersey guy whose family still lives here

Why on earth is it far fetched?

Cause he’s at a place with all those things at a historic program that he’s installed his own legacy at and is someone that loves the pressure. He’s not moving teams and he’s not getting fired. I think it is actually more likely he’d go to Saint Peter’s and see if he could turn them into Gonzaga than coach at Rutgers.

His legacy isn't at UConn
That's Calhoun's spot

How do you know he loves the pressure?
The 60 minutes interview where he basically threw his pops under the bus is very telling

He's not getting fired?
Guy is going bezerk, pissing off a lot of people, that only lasts so long when you're not winning natties

The pressure at that place is off the charts
He comes home, back to Jersey, builds off what Pike laid the foundation for and takes it to the next level... now that's legacy

UConn has massive history AND institutional support that Rutgers doesn’t have. He has already created a legacy there with 2 nattys so this is all a pipe dream of him going anywhere.

Why come here and try to rebuild a forever dormant program? We are better off catching lightning in a bottle with an up and coming coach with an ability to work with the talent they have and overachieve (ala Shaka smart at VCU)

It was a silly post by OP. Hurley not coming here in 100 years. He is the best coach in basketball.

Glad FSU fanboy is ok with RU hiring him but it will never be an option. Go back to figuring out how to retire early.

“We're getting B1G money from the conference to pay him”
-He’s already the third highest paid coach in all of college basketball. He makes more than any Big Ten coach currently does.

“Guy has won big everywhere”
-This is just an observation, it’s not a reason why he would come to Rutgers.

“UConn pressure is massive. Ours is a fraction”
-There are literally hundreds of basketball programs with less pressure to win than UConn, and I think the two national championships he’s already won kind of prove he can handle that pressure. So again, this isn’t a reason why he would come to Rutgers.

So “He's a jersey guy whose family still lives here” is the only actual reason you provided here. Which might make some sense if he weren’t only about 3 hours away from NJ at UConn.

The thought that Rutgers can just snatch away the third highest paid coach in America from a better program where he’s already won two national championships is delusional.

Hurley has infinitely more cache and leeway at UConn than Pikiell has at RU… they would be insane to move on from him unless he does something like miss the NCAAs multiple years in a row

I get your whole dream big, aim big and shoot big, totally with you. But the far fetched part is thinking that a coach who won back to back titles, had an offer from the Lakers, would somehow have to lower himself and eventually take a Rutgers job. That is lowering yourself when you are at the current heights Hurley has reached. It would take immense losing for Hurley at UConn and probably some sort of scandal for him to somehow get involved with us. Scandals don’t even exist much anymore in the age of NIL. He is levels and levels above needing a Rutgers job. Anything is possible, but extremely far fetched.

We have the money via the B1G, whether we choose to pay him or not is another story

My assumption, and a decent amount of it is based off his 60 minutes video, is he'll burn himself out at UConn
He's already pissing a lot people off

Doubt it'll happen, b/c the guy is awesome and we've never proven we're willing to go out on a limb (financially or for a controversial figure) to win

I think missing our chance to hire him in 2016 is the biggest what-if in program history

He's elite
But God, we're so overdue for an elite guy to come here and get us over the top

You, and a host of others on here, also claimed FSU was never getting out of the GOR
You were dead wrong on that one

Will Hurley come here?
Not likely... but to say it'll never happen is as foolish as claiming the GOR was ironclad

And he deserves to
2 natties will get you paid
Newsflash... we'll have the money to pay him
Whether we choose to or not is another story

Guy has won big everywhere - never said it's why he'd come to Rutgers
It's one of the many obvious reasons anyone w/a brain would want him

Of course there's 100's of programs w/less pressure to win
But name me one where it'd make more sense to come to if, and that's a big if, he were to leave UConn

Nobody's snatching him away
Never claimed we were

The post is based off him burning out at Uconn / pissing people off, wanting a less stressful position, coming home to Jersey and coaching a school where he's from
Nothing more, nothing less

I don’t think it’s out of the question. Hurley and his wife love NJ and being close to family. He’s put himself at the level of being a coach who automatically gets talent. Like Pitino and others, he’s bigger than the name on the front of the jersey.

And when Hobbs turned him down, he was still a URI coach.

I love and hope Pike get us going again - there’s no one else I want, but Hurley is my first call if he doesn’t.

It's being tolerated b/c of the natties

No, b'c we've never proven we're willing to do what it takes to become elite, and b/c he's likely smart enough to chill out w/the nonsense and calm down

Hurley bleeds Jersey. He’d love to bring a championship to NJ. I’ve always felt he will eventually end up at SHU but it could be here. It won’t be right after PIke, but after watching Pitino lead SJU I don’t know how anyone could say Hurley would never come home to SHU and/or Rutgers.
