Montez Mathis on ESPNU right now vs Hudson Catholic

No, I agree. And, I stated that. But, it's how you play the game. And, I just felt he looked overwhelmed, 22 points or not. Don't get me wrong, it was just one game. I was looking at his mechanics, and how reacted to the type of pressure HC gave him.
He scored 22 points and people are not happy?

Im beyond happy Montez will be playing for us next year but to be fair a decent amount of that came in garbage time and he didnt hit a jumper until the 2nd to last shot of the game and missed some layups and free throws in the first half. Again I have nothing against him and Im excited he’s playing for us
I hear you. He does start, and I am sure he plays a part in the game being in garbage time. I am a big believer in drivers who can score in two ways. Just like you, I am excited to see him play.

The focus moving forward must be to increase the number of players who can be consistent shooters/scorers .Concentration just on Mathis won't get the job done. There are two many complementary type players on the squad right now and hopefully additional scholarships will be available at the end of the season.

Any chuck can score 22 points, as various RU players have demonstrated. It's the consistency, the team play, the defensive effort, rebounding, court management, leadership, and it's doing it every game. There are a lot of HS players that can score 22 points, heck I've done it a few times during the good ol days. It doesn't make them Div I players. But, the door for this kid is wide open, and as stated, it is only one game. I'm sure coach sees the potential, and has given out a scholarship to back it up. All I'm saying is let's not mark him as a savior, just yet. Our tool box is empty, and we need a lot more then one player. But, it is a start.

We need shooters period. It’s a whole new ball game.

Duke has a freshman shooter who has just hit six 3’s in consecutive games.

Do we need to look at Oklahoma?

Gotta be able to shoot!

Part of that is because he gets wide open looks as teams collapse on all-world big man and future NBA top pick Bagley, who is shooting over 60% from the field.

I equate the comments about "shooting" to just a lack of basketball knowledge or people looking at stats or shooting percentages as some sort of guide on whether a player can actually shoot....there is no context of

A) Whether the majority of the 3 pointers were wide open??

B) Was it under 5 seconds on the shot clock??

C) Was it contested by a defender??

D) Was the 3 pointer taken in a fast break or transition or in a half court set??

These are called advanced analytics go well beyond the stats and shooters are best, when you have more options around the player, not in a HS game that doesn't translate to B1G basketball.

Common sense will tell anyone that Mathis plugs into the immediate rotation at shooting guard and can earn minutes and potentially start. The same posters complaining would be the same ones complaining that he chose another school, if we didn't close this recruiting victory out....for a player that in all likelihood is one of the reasons that other recruiting targets in 2018 and 2019 are actually considering RU.....that is called leadership potential, beyond shooting stats.

I am totally baffled by this thread. What the hell are we talking about here. This is VERY VERY simple. Montez Mathis is an outstanding recruit. He will be a very good player starting next season for us. Having said that we no doubt about it need to bring in two more shooters for next season assuming Corey is coming back. If he is not then we need three.

Matt Bullock played very well against Miles Bridges their senior year in high school and we see how their college careers have gone. I’m not worried about one game where Mathis didn’t look great (from what is being said). I’m confident he will help us a lot next year.

Why stop at Duke freshmen? Might as well compare him to Michael Jordan during his Bulls run. Mathis clearly is a disappointment.

Hawk I don't question that but would he be an immediate impact player at school's in the Top 5-6 in this league ?

I don't watch Highlight Tapes-----they don't mean much to me but watching him today his shot needs work.
Good observation. Mathis is more "scorer" than "shooter" right now. At least that's what I saw during travel ball.

Kid has some dog in him, he'll defend and (I'm told) he's a hard worker. That will get him on the floor early. Coaching staff will help him polish his shot.

Some of you just like to be critical. My gosh Montez scored 22 points and was guarded for much of the game by 6'8" Louis King. Mathis is 6'4". He is very good for us and will play a lot of minutes. I am glad that he trusted our coaches and wanted to play for RU. We don't need so many negative nellies.

Not very good at reading comprehension are we? Good lord.

All I was saying is we have to recruit shooters. Nothing against any particular recruit.

Game is changing. If you like to stick head in the sand and ignore the need for shooters so be it, but don’t attack fans who aren’t attacking anybody.

On the other hand to be fair to people in this thread we are SO incredibly bad at shooting that I think our fans now are so beaten up by having to watch this display that just the mention that somebody new coming in may not be a shooter makes them cringe and go off the deep end a little. It is honestly a reasonable physical response considering what we have been made to watch this year. I make my five year old shoot extra jumpers because of it. I haven’t figured out if this is good or bad for him yet.

You gotta look at MM as a piece, not as a savior. How about a roster loaded with players of equal quality as Montez but differently skilled and sized? I don’t know if kids like Geo and Montez are gonna get you in the Top Twenty but they’re gonna nudge the needle.
