No. 22 Rutgers Wrestling Set for 2023 Big Ten Championships

Hoping to start a fun & interesting convo here between sessions:

What would you do different to make the program not a “mess”?

I think our lineup is fine - we are just getting out wrestled in the Big10s (hardest wrestling conference in the country).

Honestly I think we need a coaching change. I love Goodale but I think he’s taken the program as far as he can. They need to bring in a big name coach. We have a great recruiting area and fan support. We should be more productive than we are.

It’s been excuses for years. The bottom line is recruiting is not up to par to even be in the top half of the league. We haven’t had a big win in about a decade. The shit is stale. If you can’t see that I don’t know what to tell you.
The problem is you’re not a realistic person. We are not getting the PSU, Iowa, Mich and OSU recruits. We get great wrestlers. NOW IF YOUR PROBLEM IS THE WITH COACHES I SUGGEST YOU TALK THE AD. The caps were meant put up $$$$$$
or shut up. I am sure you know who I am.

Is it unrealistic to be a top 10 team in the country with the talent that comes out of NJ?

Something needs to change, maybe its starts with the staff. Recruiting as of late has been god awful with the fan base getting excited over a commit being ranked 20th in the country. I remember when we had the likes of Aragona, Alvarez, Aguilar, Glascow, Grello, etc. Its to the point who do we have coming in that can make a impact right away? I try my best to be very patient with this notion of a "young team". Is a new staff what we need? what is exactly the change we need with this program to have the fan base excited year in and year out ?

Did you ever think any of the guys you mentioned did not have the heart to takes it to be a D1 wrestler. It’s not for everyone. Not knocking any of those boys. I sure they are great kids. Then go D2 or D3. D1 is not easy.

Anyone who fails to acknowledge that there are serious serious issues with our wrestling program is likely too emotionally vested

Am I supposed to know who you are? There’s no reason we shouldn’t be too half in the league. Are we gonna be Iowa, OSU, Penn State or UM every year? That’s unlikely but we should be a lot better than what we are given the talent in this area.

I was more referring to the level of talent those kids were at the time in high school coming into the program. Its like recruits dont take rutgers wrestling serious anymore. I wouldn't knock any kid ever but theirs seem to be writing on the wall for rutgers wrestling and that writing isn't good. Im just a very frustrated fan of the program and its hard to watch guys like Kannard loose repetitively and even worse watching Turley get dominated.....

Talk about developing wrestlers. When my son was recruited before his SR year. His JR took a 5th in NJ. Then won states. Was his college career without ups and downs…definitely not. However…he did what he wanted to do. So before you start blaming coaches…look at your kid. If you’re a fan understand their potential talent. I will tell you there were kids who previously accomplishes where way better then my sons. The real question is do you have it to go after the best…and go after it. Enough said.

Wasn't there a recent thread about the state of the program and possible solutions? The fact that some want to do it again here seems to represent increasing evidence that the current level of performance is just not good. Seems to me we have had too many misses on kids in a sport where the scholarship dollars on are limited.

I love Goodale's candidness but at the end of the day he is accountable for the state of the program which has really moved a step or two down the ladder and did not capitalize on the momentum from the Suriano and Ash national champion season.

My son did and was a 2x AA. Your point.
Your son graduated in 2016. We are now 7 years removed from then. The point is that the program has regressed since then. This tournament being more evidence of that. And not just the results but the lack of offense displayed, preparedness, technique, etc.
If you watched todays session and came away thinking “that was good wrestling” then we are it watching the same thing at all

Kannard got beat by a very subpar wrestler from Purdue but I am really starting to question where expectations should be set with this team. So underwhelming to be a fan of this team.
Better than 14th after the 1st session would be a great start.

Mr. Perrotti: Your son was the exception, not representative of the program's success in developing wrestlers.
Ken Theobold and Scott Delvecchio are a few others who developed into All Americans. Guys like Nick Gravina, John VanBrill, and Billy Smith were blood round guys who missed AA by the slimmest of margins. We certainly need to get back to that type of development cadence.

I am curious to know this- how many of the people being critical contribute financially to the program or the SKWC? New Jersey is a great wrestling state and it takes $$$ to compete with programs that have RTCs with endowments that make our $700k look like pocket change. Check out NLWC, Hawkeye, Cliff Keen and look at their rosters of resident athletes. Those guys are not at those clubs because they like the local weather.

it is easy to blame the coaches for everything and they have the most impact on the program but the daily operation of a B1G wrestling program, recruiting, and retention of athletes is a lot more complicated than many may think.

Nice bounce back win for Dean! Qualified for the NCAA tournament
Was dominated 1st matchup against Brown....
GASP...he got better somehow and beat him the rematch.
I am sure it was not coaching.

Nice back to back wins. Happy to see some offense this session! Another ticket punched.

Hoepfully they do not give the TD at the end of the 1st

that would negate his good 1st by Joe O

Tough to overcome those 4 backs even though he wrestled well for most of the match.
