Alright, we're leaving from Michigan in the early hours of Thursday, October 6th to begin our trek through the worst state in the country (Ohio), through the land of enablers (Pennsylvania) into New Jersey.

Our current plans include stopping at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, OH and eventually arriving at our hotel is Iselin, NJ around midnight. Then we have tickets to visit and ascend the Statue of Liberty at 11am on Friday. F̶r̶o̶m̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶r̶e̶ ̶(̶I̶'̶m̶ ̶a̶s̶s̶u̶m̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶a̶r̶o̶u̶n̶d̶ ̶1̶-̶2̶p̶m̶)̶ ̶w̶e̶ ̶w̶e̶r̶e̶ ̶p̶l̶a̶n̶n̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶o̶n̶ ̶d̶r̶i̶v̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶o̶v̶e̶r̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶C̶o̶n̶e̶y̶ ̶I̶s̶l̶a̶n̶d̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶h̶a̶n̶g̶ ̶o̶u̶t̶ ̶a̶ ̶b̶i̶t̶ ̶a̶n̶d̶ ̶f̶i̶n̶d̶ ̶a̶ ̶p̶l̶a̶c̶e̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶d̶i̶t̶c̶h̶ ̶o̶u̶r̶ ̶c̶a̶r̶ ̶a̶n̶d̶ ̶t̶a̶k̶e̶ ̶a̶ ̶t̶a̶x̶i̶/̶U̶b̶e̶r̶ ̶i̶n̶t̶o̶ ̶N̶Y̶C̶ ̶a̶n̶d̶ ̶s̶p̶e̶c̶i̶f̶i̶c̶a̶l̶l̶y̶ ̶T̶i̶m̶e̶s̶ ̶S̶q̶u̶a̶r̶e̶ ̶a̶n̶d̶ ̶b̶a̶s̶i̶c̶a̶l̶l̶y̶ ̶s̶p̶e̶n̶d̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶r̶e̶s̶t̶ ̶o̶f̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶d̶a̶y̶ ̶w̶a̶l̶k̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶a̶r̶o̶u̶n̶d̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶c̶i̶t̶y̶.̶

So, as someone who has never been east of Niagra Falls is this even possible (̶f̶i̶n̶d̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶s̶o̶m̶e̶w̶h̶e̶r̶e̶ ̶s̶a̶f̶e̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶p̶a̶r̶k̶ ̶i̶n̶ ̶C̶o̶n̶e̶y̶ ̶I̶s̶l̶a̶n̶d̶ ̶f̶o̶r̶ ̶h̶o̶u̶r̶s̶)̶ or is there a better way about this in general? We're going to the Statue of Liberty from the NJ side if that helps. Also, what are some must see/do things in the Times Square/NYC area within walking or subway distance? I know there's plenty of threads on things to do around New Brunswick and RU but never really seen anything about NYC. So any help would be appreciated.

As for game day we were wanting to go to a boardwalk in the early afternoon.. Is any worth a visit in early October with enough things to do?) before heading to High Point and RU a few hours before kickoff. As for post game, we're high tailing it to our rest stop for the night near Philly. The Lions coincidentally play in Philadelphia that Sunday but they suck so I'll just take being able to listen on the radio on the way home.

if you are going to the Staue of Liberty from the Jersey side no reason to go to Coney Island (unless you have an overwhelimg desire to see an empty boardwalk). After the Statue of Liberty, drive from Jersey City and park in Hoboken by the PATH station. Take the path in to NYC. Take the WTC line if you would like to visit the WTC, then a subway, cab or uber up to TImes square. By subway the "1" from WTC or 2/3 either from Chambers or transfer when you get to Chambers. When done with Time Sq, walk down Broadway to 34th st (8-blocks) and take the PATH from 33rd street to Hoboken.

Good luck

The person I'm going with wanted to check out Coney Island but yeah I'll probably go this route. Thanks!

Would have been a good thought but it is off season so it just won't be the same. I would also suugest parking either in Hoboken or Secaucus and taking the train. The train from either location runs pretty much every 10-15 minutes and is only a 10 min ride. $5.50!round trip.
This way, you don't not have to go to SOL from NJ side and can use what I would assume are tickets out of NYC. And in that case, take train from Hoboken, get off at WTC. A MUST see for any NYC trip is the 911 memorial. Will give you chills, if not tears.
Find a way to Central Park as well.
Enjoy your trip.

I live in Boston but frequently go to NYC for business and pleasure. For me the great things to see are the museums ( especially MOMA) and the various ethnic pockets like Little Italy, Chinatown and the Lower East side. I would definitely see the WTC --the exhibit there is quite moving. A boat ride around Manhattan can also be a lot of fun if the weather cooperates. Too bad you're not spending more time in NY because tickets to a Broadway show is quite the experience.

No reason to drive from Liberty State Park (statue of liberty boarding area) to Hoboken to train into NYC. You can Park your car at parking garage by Exchange Place or Newport/Pavonia in JC to catch PATH train into World Trade Center or Midtown. Per poster above don't bother heading to Coney Island. You'll spend most of your time getting there for not much to see. You'll be busy enough when heading into Manhattan. Also if you're staying in Iselin (central NJ) I suggest parking your car at Metro Park train station and taking a NJ Transit train to Newark and transfer to Path train to JC where you can catch an Uber/taxi/light rail to Liberty State Park. FYI: you can take same train south from Metro Park to get dropped off in downtown New Brunswick for game day.

Coney Island? I'd think hard about that one. It's a long way from Manhattan, it's hasn't seen an influx of money in decades and the neighborhoods that surround it are depressed. And it's a long subway ride back to manhattan...45 minutes to an hour.

If amusement parks are your thing, go to Great Adventure in Freehold, a 30 minute ride from Rutgers.

As for NYC, in addition to Yes's recommendations which are "must do's, take a walk in the high line and a stroll through Soho, the most architecturally beautiful part of the city and lined with expensive shops and beautiful women. There's a pizza place down there called, Lombardi's. Brought my 12 year old nephew there and he's still talking about the "Best Pizza Ever." Greenwhich Village is right across Houston Street and that's a much walk as well.

You're going to be tired when you finish!

There is no easy way to drive from Liberty State Park in Jersey City to Coney Island. As others have suggested skip Coney Island; you'll be spending a lot of travel time to view an empty boardwalk in a marginally safe area. If you really have to see Coney Island, take the subway rather than driving.

Great Adventure in Freehold? I need to check that out.

Not much to add other than to agree with the idea that Coney Island is not worth the trip, though I understand wanting to go if it's your only time in the area. You will go broke taking an Uber or a Taxi from Coney Island to Times Sq, and it will eat up a huge chunk of your day getting there, then to Times Sq, then back to your car and back to the hotel. It makes me die inside a little bit just thinking about trying to do that all in one day.

As everyone else said, drive from the Statue to a PATH station in JC and take that into NYC. It's about a ten min drive from Liberty State Park.

The boardwalk will be pretty sparse this time of year, but it's probably worth a trip (and frankly you'll see most of what you would have seen at Coney Island, but it's nicer). A few things will be open. You could hit Asbury Park or Pt. Pleasant. Asbury is a bit closer, but Pt. Pleasant is bit more of a real boardwalk (games/rides etc.), though they are likely to be mostly closed.

You can easily do boardwalk on game day and get back in time for a nice tailgate.

I agree. If staying in Iselin use the Metro park train station so you don't need to drive and park in NYC. Take the train to midtown where you can walk around Times Square / Broadway. Then take a subway to Battery park where you can get one of the boats to the Statue of Liberty. After the Statue you can take a subway to Coney Island. After Coney Island subway back to Penn Station for a train to Metro Park.

Add the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum. This is on a Navy aircraft carrier docked on the Hudson River and is a must see, especially on a nice Fall day.

If you drive and park near the ferry to the S of Liberty, when finished there drive North a few miles to Weehawken where you can catch a ferry to NYC. It is called New York Waterways and they have reasonably priced ample parking. The ferry company has free bus service on the NY side to take you to many areas around Times Square.

Having taken the train from Metropark for many years (Iselin is my hometown) to commute into NYC I agree with the suggestion above....but if you do decide to park at Metropark make sure you leave early to get a spot in the parking deck....though Friday commuter traffic isn't as bad as midweek. Also agree with the many to-dos already suggested.....in addition if you like Indian food then make sure to drive through downtown Iselin on Oak Tree Rd. and take your pick - many good choices.

I work in Metropark. Are you staying at the APA? Agree with what those above said. Driving to points in and around NYC may be a waste of time and frustrating. Use the train from Metropark to get to NYC, and you can get to everything you need to via train, subway, PATH and ferries.

If you are looking for a boardwalk with lots of interesting restaurants, bars, shops, etc, Asbury Park is the place to go. If you are a music fan, the Stone Pony is right across the street from the Boardwalk, and a rock and roll institution. There is a really cool pinball place called Silverball Museum where you can play for an hour or half day on lots of old and new pinball machines. Your best dining options in Asbury Park are on and around Cookman Ave. It is walkable from the Boardwalk. There is a German style beer hall, a Mexican restaurant, and many other interesting choices.

If you have younger kids, and looking for children's rides/amusements, Point Pleasant Beach is a good option, but many rides may be closed by now.

Not sure where you are from in Michigan but the most efficient way to get around NYC and the surrounding areas that you list is mass transit. If you drive you will spend more time sitting in traffic, looking for parking, and then probably still need to get on subways and use taxis anyway. Save yourself a lot of headache and leave your car at the hotel. The only exception would be if you are bringing an entire family with you and it becomes uneconomical to buy 6 train tickets times all the rides you'll be taking. If it's you and a buddy or two, the other posters have nailed it.

you may be better off visiting Atlantic City rather than Coney island - or even Seaside Heights or Asbury Park (good dining and night life in AP - Springsteen tribute band playing at the legendary Stone Pony Friday night.

Likely you are staying at a Route One hotel - check to see if the hotel has a shuttle to Metro Park train station. That would be an easy ride into NYC.

Agree with the suggestions above.
Definitley skip Coney Island, sad but true, sorry.
Yes to Statue of Liberty, I'd add Ellis Island. Approach from Jersey Side and take the Ferry
Yes to 9/11Museum -Have not been yet but would love to take in the WTC observatory. I'd add Battery Park and maybe a free ride on the Staten Island Ferry
Getting from Downtown to Midtown is a cab or subway ride.
Empire State Building an option. It's roughly midway from the tip of Manhattan to Times Square. If you do the WTC observatory you can skip this of course.
All the cultural stuff, Museums etc. are good, mostly in Midtown. If you are going to Midtown add a walk through Times Square. Also check out Rockefeller Center
If you have someone that enjoys a retail excursion walk along 5th Avenue remember just looking is free.
Wear comfortable shoes and look for mass transit options.

If you go to the Statue of Liberty from NJ you DO NOT have to return to NJ. You can board the ferry that goes to Battery Park in Lower Manhattan. From there you can catch nearly every subway. Go see the sights and than return to Jersey City via the PATH. From there its a short and cheap taxi ride back to your car.
Definitely pass on Cony Island. Everything will be closed.

Unless you are an avid fan of the movie the Warriors, Coney Island can and should be avoided. Of course if you are a fan of the movie, stay past midnight and some of the locals may assist you in reliving some of the chase scenes from the film.

Seriously Coney is not worth the trip. Spend your time either in Manhattan or at the Jersey Shore. I also live at the shore and Knight Shift is spot on with his advice.

You're trying to cram a lot into that day.

Coney Island is the biggest geographic outlier, so I'd be inclined to cut it unless it's an important pilgrimage for you. Coney Island is actually quite fun in peak summer. I've never been in October, but in winter it's pretty dead.

Either way I'd take transit into Manhattan, whether you're going there from Jersey or Coney Is. From Liberty State Park, drive over to the Grove Street area in Jersey City. There are parking decks and lots in that area where you can park for $15-20 per day. Here's a map/list of parking lots and decks in Jersey City: http://www.bestparking.com/jersey-city-parking/

Take PATH train from Grove to NYC. There's one train line to World Trade Center which gets you close to Wall Street, 9/11 memorial and museum, 1WTC observatory. Or you can take the 33rd street line to Midtown and you'll get off right by Macy's, Empire State Bldg, and a 10 minute walk to Times Square. Here's the PATH website with routes, fares, and alerts. http://www.panynj.gov/path/ The standard fare is $2.75 each way per person. You can use the vending machine at the station to get a MetroCard and load it up with some fare money. You can use the MetroCard on PATH and on NYC subways. You can also follow PATHtweets on twitter for service alerts in case something is amiss the day you're here.

Have fun in the city, there's really an endless list of things to do. I've lived in the area for 12 years and still have a pretty long NYC bucket list. But hit as many of the basics as you can. A long walk from the 33rd Street PATH station would hit the Empire State Building, Grand Central Terminal, Rock Center/5th Ave, Central Park, Times Sq. Get some good street meat from the Halal Guys at 53rd and 6th. I agree that the Intrepid is worth a visit if you can get there in time, and many of the museums in Midtown if you're into that. If you're more interested in bars, there are a sh--ton.

Coming back to NJ at night, depending how late you stay out, you may need to plan. NYC subways and PATH run 24/7 so you can stay out late. BUT because of track work, starting after midnight Friday night/Saturday morning, the 33rd Street line shuts down every weekend through December. You'll need to take a subway or cab to World Trade Center and take PATH from there. Or, depending on the size of your group, you may want to split the cost of an uber (approx $40-50) back to your car in Jersey City.

Completely agree with you on AP. However, they may want to see a kitschy boardwalk, Point Pleasant fits that bill. 709, Daniels, Prime 13 & the Poached Pear offer fine dining in Point.

Coney Island is NOT a dump. It's actually awesome. Totonno's, Nathan's, the Cyclone, the wonder wheel, the Mets single A park. However, I don't recommend it for this trip this time of year.

I would advise against driving to NY, best thing is to take train from Metropark to NY Penn Station - 40 minute train ride, park your car at Metropark.

Once in NY you can take taxi/uber/subway to just about anywhere you want to go. When I have visitors from out of the country, depending on what their interest is, following are some things:

Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island
Empire State Building
Museums
NBC Studio Tour/Rockfeller Center/Radio City Music Hall
9/11 - Ground Zero
not sure if they still give - Tour of Stock Exchange
lunch/dinner in Little Italy or Chinatown
walk across Brooklyn Bridge

Coney Island is interesting in the summer. But of your list of attractions, only Totonno's and Nathan's is open on Fridays in October. I don't think it is worth 3 hours of round trip travel time to get a slice of pizza and a hot dog.

Just remembered the 33rd st PATH is not working on weekends right now due to maintenance.

Six Flags Great Adventure is in Jackson, NJ not Freehold. It has a strong focus on roller-coasters so if that is your thing, you will love it.

Coney Island is a waste of time at this point, that is not what it used to be. So unless you want to get depressed, I would stay away.

There are some great recommendations in this thread. I love the idea of Asbury park. Theres alot to offer. if you want to see a range of the jersey shore, head south to Point Pleasant for breakfast and walk on boardwalk, and head to Asbury Park for the more urban beach town with great restaurants, etc (Theres a great beer garden with and outdoor roof area in Asbury Park). You can get lunch and some beers there). As for NYC, make sure you budget your time. Getting around the city can take some time and some of these places are all over the place. if you have limited time, you may want to consider one of the planned tours on one of the buses (with the open air upper deck.)

Use public transportation as much as possible. Take the subways. Ask people for help. they will help you. NYC is not as intimidating as it looks. if you plan on visiting different parts of teh city, you can get a day or weekend subway pass.
