Literally has a DJ booth in the student section ….LOVE IT ….I can’t even imagine how much whining would go on here if we did that lol!! You guys act as if this isn’t happening all over the country (DJ music instead of bands the entire game) BUT you couldn’t be more wrong. Sorry.

(This is gonna be fun lol…..)

Well if it were up to me, we'd can the band in favor of a full time DJ (I know that's a minority opinion, but I'm just not a fan of marching band music).

Still the same crappy music with the Shipping Off to Boston song fitting right in down South.

If it were up to me, we'd tear out the sound system, create an NIL collective for marching band members, and increase our band size to 500-600 members.

Band is small and seems insignificant. We never have had an impressive band unfortunately. I guess if you were a member of the band it’s important but the non band person could care less. The modern college student can definitely care less if we have a band or not at games. Heck kids in high school make fun of the band members and that’s wrong but it’s always been that way.

Cali - does the band, the DJ, the train horn, etc. even matter?

People don’t go to movies for the popcorn.

EDIT- have stopped using the orange man wrong meme/gif, bc it seems to trigger some people. This one from Blazing Saddles is much better, and fits the thread.
blazing saddles no GIF

If Duke Dumont was playing after the game we’d have a ton more fans going and staying. Of course we’d have to pay him a nice chunk but still.

You're absolutely wrong. Years ago the band was a major attraction and extremely active in the stands. However, for a while they had a revolving door at band director, and then they got Tim Smith who was a disaster. Even now, Smith's replacement has kind of moved on within the department, so I'm not sure who's really in charge at this point.

The most unrealistic part of "Halloween Ends" wasn't the murders or evil.

It was that the main bullies were marching bands members.

I was going to respond with this exact thing. We did have DJ yoshi there for a few seasons. I remember it being pretty successful and enjoyable. Should have the DJ in the recruiting deck for pre- game and between quarters . Let the band play exclusively during the game and half time !
This (and maybe timeouts…). No need between every play.

Origins of marching bands is militaristic, of course, whereby troops were manage via audible signals whether en route to or on the field of battle. We're talking BC roots (Before Christ; not Boston College). 😉

Given the nature of football (violence/combative) and our nation's history, marching bands were adopted and championed since near the beginning of the sport of football. Same for pep rallies.

As for DJs, well....

I've never understood why that deck isn't used during games. Could pick 50 students every game to win entry into that area, including free food and beverages...and have the DJ located there.

We literally did this years ago with DJ Yoshi. He set up in the student section in the recruiting lounge I think. Student section would go HAM, and people on the board hated it as expected

...put a DJ in recruiting booth and build a roof top deck for the cannon crew so its not at field level....

Get legit artist to do DJ sets. Really turn it up.
I really hope you don't mean the volume. After a decades long slug fest with Game Day Clown School operations, we finally got it turned down somewhat. Now they just stuck other sh*t(train horn) in there to annoy the living fvck out of people.

At this point, it has to be Matt Colagiovanni's personal mission to piss off as many Rutgers fans as possible in what he considers his personal fiefdom. And yes he has a fat face you just want to punch.

Ever since Nuts organized a hate campaign against Tim Smith as band director it’s been downhill for the RU marching band ever since.

The last season before he got pushed out I introduced myself to Tim before a FB game and had a friendly chat with him. He even told me what tunes they would play at the next halftime performance. The guy loved RU but couldn’t survive the efforts of the haters. Just another reason why we can’t have nice things at RU. 😀

Wait, that actually happened? Geez… lame. So what if folks didn’t agree with his choices, that’s his livelihood. It’s not like its an elected position and his policy directly affected RU faithful’s ability to provide or live. What am I missing here?

Very incorrect post. Sure many people wouldn't care much if they were to get rid of the band, and people don't go to the game to see the band, but there would definitely be a lot of people that would miss the band being there. It's part of the college game atmosphere. Not sure what your high school analogy has to do with this, I don't remember ever seeing anyone making fun of a band member in college.

I was going to say the same thing.

We do it = "small time"
An SEC school does it = great idea

You are so wrong. And you are completely rewriting history. Tim was a great guy in person, yes, I met him a number of times. But working with him was a different story. He drove away many band members, and also drove away his talented assistants. He alienated just about everybody in the Rutgers Alumni Band. What saved his job was that he would do anything Schiano asked of him. Anything, even to the detriment of the band. Again, this led to both band members and assistants quitting.

No, it didn't. Knightmoves is making that up. I'll let NUTS address this if he chooses.

Part of it is that we pay nothing for the position. Historically the position wasn't even faculty, not sure if it is now. That's why in the late 80's and the 90's we'd have band directors come in, get a solid couple of years under their belt, then get poached by another school willing to pay a lot more for a good band director. Michigan State, WVU, etc. hired our band directors away.

I disagree when I was at Rutgers the band was not an attraction or an afterthought. Major attraction how? It’s only a major attraction to the band members and the families of the band members. No one cares about the band and in high school no one cares about the band except if you are in the band. From my experience going back to adolescence people in the marching band were in it to be in something because without marching band there would be no activity for that individual.

OK, I double dog dare Nuts to come clean here and explain his efforts to turn RU fans against Tim Smith as RU Band director. He even promoted boycotting of the band halftime show and the firing of Tim Smith along with the yanking of his pension from RU.

The Nuts vs Tim Smith conflict found its way onto FB, texting and other social media where the two went toe to toe and threats were reportedly issued along with defamation of character charges. Just lookup Tim Smith and Areyounuts in the Search function here for the gory details. The receipts are there.

The whole hate campaign was really uncalled for imo.
