Ole Miss DJ

Would I like to see a larger Band? Sure, who wouldn’t.

Musically I think they sound pretty good. More than pretty good actually. Macy’s seems to think so too.

It’s one of those things that adds to the pageantry that makes the college and high school game different.

A DJ, ehh.

Anyone notice that of late the DJs at wedding receptions only seem to care about VOLUME. LOUD = good. If you can talk to the person next to you they are a failure.

You are so wrong. And you are completely rewriting history. Tim was a great guy in person, yes, I met him a number of times. But working with him was a different story. He drove away many band members, and also drove away his talented assistants. He alienated just about everybody in the Rutgers Alumni Band. What saved his job was that he would do anything Schiano asked of him. Anything, even to the detriment of the band. Again, this led to both band members and assistants quitting.

No, it didn't. Knightmoves is making that up. I'll let NUTS address this if he chooses.

Part of it is that we pay nothing for the position. Historically the position wasn't even faculty, not sure if it is now. That's why in the late 80's and the 90's we'd have band directors come in, get a solid couple of years under their belt, then get poached by another school willing to pay a lot more for a good band director. Michigan State, WVU, etc. hired our band directors away.
I mean I was referring more to the positive reception of a DJ at the Ole Miss game compared to the geezers on here complaining about a DJ at Rutgers games, but I would agree that if we want a good band director (or any staff member of any department really) they need to pay him/her enough to stay. I don't know about the Nuts vs. Smith conflict, but there was enough interest in replacing Smith with someone more modern. My buddy that has season tickets with me is a Rutgers music grad and is now an assistant director of a high school marching band and is oblivious to these forums, but also conveyed that Smith's time had come and gone and was happy to see a fresh face brought in.

Well if it were up to me, we'd can the band in favor of a full time DJ (I know that's a minority opinion, but I'm just not a fan of marching band music).
I personally enjoy a DJ more, and feel like the band seems to cut off good songs. However, it's tough to get lost and forget this is college (especially when so much money is involved in football and basketball) and that a band is part of going to school. I will say the band does get into it, and have no problem that multiple parts of the university get involved in gameday and seem to enjoy it (cheerleaders, dance team, band).

While I love rock and raucous music, I enjoy a root canal or colonoscopy prep more than our DJ/sound person. Terrible timing, terrible song selection at inopportune moments and no sense of feel for the flow of the game. Definitely don't want to see the band minimized or go away in favor of more disorganized DJ garbage.

A good marching band is a big part of many awesome college game day experiences. Think of the school songs you hear at Tennessee, Notre Dame, Michigan, Georgia (this coming from a guy that was at GT so I have no love for the Dawgs, but still...), Florida State, USC... It can be awesome.

When I was in the band, we sent a pep band to Army. After the game, we played Loyal Sons. All of the cadets within hearing stopped and stood at attention while we were playing because it sounds like an alma mater. That was an awesome experience. Nobody gets emotional about anything a DJ plays, but the ringing of the Old Queens Bell and Loyal Sons at the end of a Rutgers game will choke me up every time. (Haven't made it to a game in years, so I have no idea if that's still a thing.)

From my experience going back to adolescence people in the marching band were in it to be in something because without marching band there would be no activity for that individual.
What a crock and condescending comment. I was band President in HS and actually left the football team (where I was going to start) to be in the band. I was a drummer and wanted to major in music at the time. I played HS basketball too.
BTW, the bus rides back and hanging out with the drill team was pretty cool and provided a lot of nice early childhood memories (or is that mamories?)

It is what it is now because of everything noted above. If we had a B1G level Band people would certainly care like they did when members were appearing on TV like the Victoria Angels and other events. Right now they have been d-emphasized and this is what you get.

That’s the difference.👍

When we played Iowa St. in the Pinstripe their band took over the field and demanded your attention with their size and sound.
wonder how many here remember The Rutgers Marching 100 get invited to play in the 1969 Rose Bowl Parade along with USC?

This guy’s booth is literally smack in the middle of the student section. It’s pretty cool!
Ever since Nuts organized a hate campaign against Tim Smith as band director it’s been downhill for the RU marching band ever since.
Dude…don’t EVER make up shit about me again. WHAT THE **** is your problem? This isn’t even remotely close to being truthful. Keyboard warrior asshole you are my Lord.

OK, I double dog dare Nuts to come clean here and explain his efforts to turn RU fans against Tim Smith as RU Band director. He even promoted boycotting of the band halftime show and the firing of Tim Smith along with the yanking of his pension from RU.

The Nuts vs Tim Smith conflict found its way onto FB, texting and other social media where the two went toe to toe and threats were reportedly issued along with defamation of character charges. Just lookup Tim Smith and Areyounuts in the Search function here for the gory details. The receipts are there.

The whole hate campaign was really uncalled for imo.
WHAT THE **** ARE YOU TAKING ANOUT?

The only “threats” were made by Smith …because I didn’t like him. That’s it. We had conversations, very pleasant ones, for years until he freaked out on me because I thought it was time for a change - AS DID MANY OTHERS ON THESE BOARDS (specifically firmer band members) - and openly posted about it. That’s it. Get a life. You’re defending a man who blatantly - OPENLY- lied to the fans year after year after year about the size of his band by 25-30% IF NOT MORE.

“Promoted yanking his pension?” SERIOUSLY?

BTW - it was Smith who attacked me on Facebook you no-life loser

So I start a thread about a DJ @ Ole Miss (without saying negative anything the Rutgers Marching Band) whatsoever and I get attacked out of nowhere by another poster?

WTF?

Probably a common thing with Rutgers always lying about attendance and number of actual season ticket holders every year. We all remember the Tim Smith saga. I’m not a big lover of only a DJ… I believe there is room for both to co-exist in music venues such as a football game. I would suggest Rutgers turn down next years Thanksgiving ‘s Macy’s Day Parade invitation. I mean the band is a stain on the university, poor quality overall and it brings nothing to the party.

Somewhat strange to me why a potential starter on the football team would quit ( assume with no injury ) and join the marching band because you wanted to be a music major. You could have done both and still majored in music Yes? No? …The bus rides with the drill team really? Well to each their own.I prefer the male-female bonding but there was always plenty of opportunity for those romantic activities post game at least in the mid to late 60’s . Saturday Night … Saturday night …Saturday night.

We're talking frosh year/frosh team. and I was put under the wing of the Band Director that could have stared in drumline. He was actually from NC AT&T. that very school. I got to be the feature drummer from day 1. It was a big deal. I wanted to be in the OSU band and you didn't make all state music without being totally committed to music.
And I didn't pull a blackshear.
Sorry you can't relate.

You gave the impression you were up for a varsity type starting position. I still maintain that you could do both if you were willing and able to. As a frosh in high school I find it hard to believe you’re being named to the All State Band though a great goal to have was not going to happen either way. I can relate… as a 13 year old I had the opportunity to train under the same instructor as the late Jerome Hines. Hines was a gifted math mind who later became a great opera singer. I wanted it badly but my father said make a choice … you’ll need to give up one of your loves… Do I regret playing sports ? No I played them ALL and quite well. Do I understand your love of the music side …absolutely . The late singer of the “ Box Tops” Alex Chilton (Tulane U grad) once told me you have a great singing voice but remember it is all in the promotion . He was spot on but getting into the recording industry tough then but tougher now. I eventually went in a totally different direction though many who had heard me sing over the years said, “ why didn’t you pursue singing ?” So yes I get it… good for you.
