Ongoing opponent watch

Wow the B1G schedule makers did not do us any favors. 13 games against Q1 teams, but 3 home and 10 away ?!? Are u kidding

Of the 14 B1G schools, 12 would be Q1 games if played on the road or at neutral sites. Only Nebraska and Northwestern are ranked below 50th, and we got Nebraska twice. Don't think it's the schedule-makers that are brutal, but the strength of the conference itself.

Wow the B1G schedule makers did not do us any favors. 13 games against Q1 teams, but 3 home and 10 away ?!? Are u kidding

The definition of Q1 is different at home vs. on the road. At home it's games against top-30 NET teams. On the road, it's top-75.

Purdue (38th in the NET) is a Q2 opponent at home. But they're Q1 on the road. Same team, different quadrants. That's why every team has more Q1 road games than home games.

With no more Q3/Q4 games left on the schedule, if St. Bonaventure is officially our worst loss. If they can somehow raise itself up to 100th or better, it'd move our only Q3/Q4 loss up to Q2.

Remaining Schedule:
Q1
8 - Maryland
19 - @Penn St
21 - @Ohio St
26 - @Purdue
33 - @Wisconsin

Q2
32 - Michigan
34 - Illinois

Every win from here on out is a strong, resume-building win.

So, looking at some of the border-line teams who we would want to finish strong:

78 Pittsburgh - Lots of opportunities for them to get wins here, with only FSU left in the Top 50.
13 @FSU
52 UVA
62 @NC St
65 Cuse
79 @VTech
81 @GTech
101 Clemson

84 SFA - Need to sweep the rest of the season, and may creep up to 75th.
190 SHSU
204 @ACU
286 Lamar
303 UCA
313 @AMCC
318 NWSt
345 @UIW

113 Bonnies - They're through the teeth of their schedule, and won't face the top 3 teams in their conference again outside their tournament.
55 Richmond
74 @SLU
85 Duquesne
97 Davidson
157 @LaSalle
233 @St. Josephs
233 St. Josephs

really would like to see the Bonnies move into the top 100, if they go 6-1 that will happen. It would be huge for the resume to have no loss outside of Q2.

also really need Nebby to move out of Quad 4 as a home win and hopefully Umass but they really suck

Pitt's bad loss to Clemson just torpedoed its NET ranking (from 78 to 92). I think any hope of it becoming Q1 may be gone at this point.

Remaining Schedule:
Q1
8 - Maryland
18 - @Penn St
30 - Michigan
31 - @Purdue
32 - @Wisconsin

Q2
36 - Illinois

Saturday may be our last non-Q1 game for the year.

Pittsburgh lost by 10 at VTech tonight after losing by 20 to Clemson at home. Though Clemson just knocked off #5 Louisville by 15, so their NET will go up. Will see what their NET drops to tomorrow, but will surely be below 100. At this point, I'm hoping they don't spiral down to Q3.

yup put that in another thread...that is really good news that both made the jump. How long can they hang there

going to revisit my thoughts on St Bonnies. Boy that Davidson 30 point loss really is a wtf loss at home...they had been playing so well to crap the bed against a middling team. Still they get Richmond at home next game..that could be a bounty game to shoot their numbers up while also knocking Richmond off the bubble. If they move to Q2 it can be enormous

Northwestern's been a Q3 game since we played them... but they've been slowly sliding. They need a win somewhere... either vs. MN or @Nebraska.

I wonder if Nebby can move up...tough call with those 2..so many losses between them

I am rooting like hard for Nebby to beat Michigan State..please make it happen

Is their another power conference that has 2 Quad 4 schools?

no because the asinine NET system ranks Nebraska and Northwestern as the 2 worst power conference schools in the country.

Cal is way worse than either of them as are Boston College and Vandy, yet all 3 of them rank 150 or better on NET.

No other power conference has one Quad 4 school. Worst two schools in each power conference:

BE - 72 DePaul, 69 SJU
B12 - 101 Kansas ST, 93 TCU
P12 - 142 California, 121 Washington St
SEC - 145 Vanderbilt, 117 Texas A&M
ACC - 150 Boston College, 108 Wake Forest
B1G - 186 Nebraska, 177 Northwestern

in fairness, Northwestern and Nebraska have been horrific this year...and not talking about Big 10 play, their non conference slates were disasters

But again, that's just the NET rankings. Kenpom, which tends to be more accurate when looking at head-to-head matchups and point spreads, has a different result:

BE - 83 DePaul, 78 SJU
B12 - 100 Kansas ST, 87 TCU
B1G - 135 Nebraska, 132 Northwestern
SEC - 171 Vanderbilt, 134 Texas A&M
ACC - 176 Boston College, 105 Miami
P12 - 179 California, 136 Washington St

I mean, NET has Cal 44 spots better than Nebraska.... while kenpom has Cal 44 spots behind Nebraska. That's a crazy swing between two different ranking methodologies.

it's because the SOS calculation for NET is RPI style structured on wins and losses as opposed to KenPom which is based on performance/efficiency.
