OT: 2019 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Nominees

sounds like you basically want to induct everyone in....figures
This is a really tough group of 16 (after kicking out Whitney and Notorious BIG) for me to select 5.

I am going to put my huge fandom of Soundgarden and NIN aside for a moment.

I am not much of a Judas Priest fan, but you cannot deny their contributions and influence in the metal genre, like it or not. So that's one of my five.

Motorhead--another band I am not a huge fan of, and while they did not sell tons of records, their influence in indisputable. Caught them live at a small club in Wilmington, NC in 1991, and they were fantastic. And Lemmy is god. Two.

Thin Lizzy and the Doobie Brothers are long overdue. They are three and four.

Soundgarden is my fifth, if not my first. Listened to Badmotorfinger on my commute this morning. It's a great album from start to finish. Their other albums are solid. It's a shame they had a hiatus. I caught them live before and after the hiatus, and they were much better after the hiatus. Chris Cornell was one of the top 5 rock vocalists of all time. The range and power of his voice is incredible.

The Dave Mathews Band should be in no doubt. They check off every box. Oh and Dave is one of the top 5 best songwriters of all time. Just my Opinion of Course

16 Nominees on the ballot:
  • Pat Benatar -- Absolutely, and Neil Geraldo is listed too.
  • Dave Matthews Band--Not yet
  • Depeche Mode--Maybe
  • The Doobie Brothers--Definitely--why are they not in yet?
  • Whitney Houston--Not rock, but she will get in.
  • Judas Priest--It is a crime they are not in yet
  • Kraftwerk--No
  • MC5--100% yes
  • Motörhead--Another crime they are not in yet
  • Nine Inch Nails-- Yes, please
  • The Notorious B.I.G.--Umm, no way
  • Rufus featuring Chaka Khan- will get in, but others more deserving
  • Todd Rundgren--Should have been in already
  • Soundgarden--Yes, please
  • T. Rex--Should have been in a long time ago
  • Thin Lizzy--Shocked they are not in yet.
Thin Lizzy, Motorhead, and Judas Priest are not in because of the RRHOF's longstanding hipster doofus bias against heavy metal and hard rock. There is a similar bias against progressive rock. You have Rolling Stone's Jan Wenner to thank.

The walls have crumbled somewhat in recent years with the inductions of Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Yes, and Rush; bands with massive followings that have been subject to outright hostility from music critics for decades. The inductions of these bands has more than a little to do with the introduction of fan voting into the process.

Alex Lifeson's induction speech is hysterical.

I'd add that the physical R&R HOF is a terrific place to visit if you're ever in Cleveland, I can easily spend an entire day in there....
Then head to the Flats for bars, restaurants, and Great Lakes Brewing.

100% correct.

Stunned that the Doobie Brothers aren't already in. Remember them doing a Saturday afternoon show in the old Rutgers Stadium - May 10, 1973. The stage was in the north endzone and maybe a couple thousand wandered through the "festival". No memory of the other acts.

LOL!! Rush had 23 Gold, 14 Platinum, and 3 multi-Platinum albums. 3rd most consecutive of any of these to The Beatles and The Stones. Sorry, But not only do these deserve to be in, they should’ve been in a long time ago.

@RU4Real Lifeson’s speech was genius!

Rush fought a 40 year battle with critics from the stage and studio, and won. Rolling Stone finally broke down and gave them a feature a few years ago. One die-hard fan reacted by writing a post stating "Thank you, Rolling Stone, and f#@k you".

Institutions like the RRHOF and the Grammys tend to reward artists that are manufactured by the music industry, rather than rewarding artists that care about their craft.

There might not be a band in the history of music that has cared as much about their “craft” as Rush did. How do you think they built one of the worlds greatest followings over the course of 40-years?

Judas Priest, Motorhead and Black Sabbath are the founding fathers of all Metal, all of it.. All of the original members of Motorhead have passed away. Judas Priest are old, Glenn Tipton has Parkinson's disease. Lets get them in while they can still play. Stop screwing around!

The HOF wanted nothing to do with them because they were not a pop band. It took a massive fan campaign that lasted years (it seems like it forever, like over a decade) of non-stop pressure before the HOF finally caved in and said ok. It was a long running joke that Rush wasn't in the HOF, an outrageous oversight.

It was actually a serious question and not a statement.
I've heard plenty of her stuff and it all sounds fairly average to me.
You disagree, obviously, which is your prerogative.

ok, i will bite. here is her resume:

Four-time Grammy Award winner.
She has two RIAA-certified multi-platinum albums, five platinum albums, three gold albums, and 15 Billboard Top 40 singles

What more do you want?

With respect to Judas Priest, do they even care if they get into this? Every metal fan knows that metal's outsider status is part of what makes it so awesome. I don't think Lemmy gave a shit about this kind of thing and the members of Judas Priest probably don't either. They know who they are and what they did for the genre that is the true bastard child of rock and roll. Keeping it away from being categorized with some of the artists in that group like Dave Matthews Band (wtf?) is a good thing.

Ironically, metal is the only real rock and roll that's still been alive and well since about 1996.

Not to pick on one band, but why the hell is Green Day in the RRHOF? What exactly did they accomplish?

Priest does care somewhat, Lemmy clearly gave no :Poop of course.
The biggest metal band of all time, Iron Maiden, couldn't care less.

As a fan, it is weird to have Black Sabbath and not those two. It is just that you know if you going to have something called the Rock and Roll Hall of Frame, it is just really weird not to have the most important bands from the only genre of rock that people still care about in 2019.:Unhappy:

Defined pop-punk in the 1990s which was probably the biggest genre of rock music of the late 1990s, Dookie and its follow ups are considered classics of the genre, they've had a lot of big hits, and American Idiot and its Anti-Bush message won over a lot of critics in the mainstream. They were a shoe in and I'm surprised the other big pop punk act of the decade Blink-182 hasn't made it in. Whatever you think of pop-punk, it was the last gasp of rock in the mainstream. The genre deserves some recognition.

Priest and Motorhead should make it in, they've had success, mainstream success, sold a ton of records and influenced a lot of bands and outside media (trick question, Lemmy is God!).

They played Punk which at that time was super underground and made it super mainstream.

Green Day has sold more than 85 million records worldwide. The group has won five Grammy Awards.
They even had a Broadway show that was nominated for 3 Tony awards.

That is all pretty freaking nuts for a Punk Band.

she was a rock pioneer who could not only sing her pipes off in the early 80s by taking the typical male classic rock sound and fitting it a female without sounding like she was actually a female. The only other rocker at the time besides her was Stevie Nicks who was in 2x. She also quickly discovered the importance of videos for songs, even her earlier videos which were quite basic were very much timed for MTV's birth. I believe You Better Run was the 2nd video ever shown on MTV and that along with a few others were MTV staples...and the Love is A Battlefield vid one of the classic vids of the 80s. She brought toughness and attitude to a male dominated genre and unlike Joan Jett she was able to have much more chart success...not saying Jett didnt but Benetar's appeal and reach far greater

agree a critics favorite but not sure about their long lasting impact at this point..to me this is a group that was hugely successful at a time when music really sucked so they appeared better than they really were

Their crappy and immature political opinions should have absolutely nothing to do with their getting into the rock and roll hall of fame. Blink-182 is a band I like, but they are garbage and not deserving of RRHOF, in my opinion. I can perhaps go along with the genre deserves recognition, but then doesn't that open up a Pandora's box of whatabouts?

What about rap rock. Shouldn't Limp Bizkit, Rage Against the Machine and Faith No More be in? Kid Rock?

Green Day going in so early is an insult to Priest and Motorhead.

FAKE "punk band." :Sly:

When you sell some 60 million albums, multiple hits that are still on the radio, influenced countless bands, and were probably the last band to truly be mainstream, you get in. I don't even so how it's a question. They will eventually get it.

Kind of like Annie Lennox and the Eurythmics?

I'm just teasing you. Annie and the Eurythmics should have been in if Green Day got in. And some of of the rap rock bands should be in too on that score (not Limp Bizkit--that was a joke).

Just like Bon Jovi. (cough, cough, cough).

no they wont...there are groups like Alice in Chains and STP who have more success and more impact who are not in.

Blink is like one of those popular Total Request Live bands arent they

There's a bunch of shitty acts in the hall, quality isn't a factor to worry about here.

Rage will get in, maybe, the issue with them is the length of their tenure was short.

Limp Bizkit was a fad that died out quickly, Blink and Green Day songs still get played on the radio to this day.

Faith No More? Come on, I love Mike Patton but they really only had the one song.

I think you're underselling the success and impact of Blink. There was no band in the late 90s more influential than them. Blink has sold almost as many records as AiC and STP combined.

Faith No More was incredibly influential on the genre that came almost a decade after they first came out

Blink is basically a pop group and a watered down version of Green Day...whether songs get played on the radio isnt enough...I mean the Doobies Bros arent in yet, there are many classic rock artists on the outside

who did they influence exactly....Good Charlotte? Rock Music basically died after the horrible crash of crap in the late 90s/early 00s
