OT: 2024 NY Giants Season Thread

The OL was clearly better than last years, but not great. Jones was essentially held out for the preseason and it showed. Whether he steps up or remains at this level to be determined.
There's no stepping up. He's awful. I can't believe we have to watch year 6 of this guy.

He’s had 6 years to step up!!!

ENOUGH ALREADY!!!!!

Francesa ripping OL hard for allowing 5 sacks.
I didn't watch game close enough to know anything
It was clear early Jones wouldn't be back to 2022 after a year off.
Burns had 4 solo tackles but Thibodeaux didn't even record a tackle or assist.
This will be another year in the desert for Giants.
Go Jets!
I listened to Mike, and I think he was wrong on this point. OL was decent. Jones had time. He just couldn’t find a throw he wanted to make.

I thought Kaliakmanis’s willingness to throw into tight spots was the ultimate contrast.

Didn't I tell you Jones sucked?
You did. I had hope.

But this was as bad as Jones has ever looked. He looks shot mentally.

But in a way this is what we wanted. Jones needs to be either good or terrible. We got the latter which will make for a lousy season but should set us up for a high pick.

Giants should be firing their GM and entire scouting department today.

He stepped up in Year 4 and was behind the worst OL in the NFL and got multiple injuries in Year 5.
His best year was his rookie year, 2019. That and 2022 were his best seasons, both of which Saquon Barkley had his 1000 yard seasons.

Injuries or not, a lot more QBs, some of who were better, were cut for less. Esp if he’s still doing rookie mistakes in his sixth season.

Hope was out the window years ago with him as QB.

No the problem now is can we even trust Schoen and Daboll to get the correct QB? I love Daboll but he's so complicit in running out this guy for a 6th season that it's going to be impossible for him to survive if we only get 4 wins this year. Schoen looks like a massive bust as a GM as well at this point. The young players and Burns really need to play well this season.

I don’t really want to debate it but how was hope out the window years ago when they were in the playoffs 2 years ago?

And for as much as people dont want to accept it without a top 3 pick it made sense to stick with Jones this year. I don’t see how that is on Daboll.

Now are Neal and Thibs and other picks enough to doubt the draft evaluation under Schoen? Maybe but i suspect ownership in order to keep some semblance of stability will keep both guys, but if it looks as ugly as it did yesterday all year then im not sure you can stick with them both.

Because the game plans were so catered and limited to Jones/Barkley that year in the beginning we were good. I told you once teams figured it out the offense went into the tank. Minny was a horrible defensive team so Jones played well against them an no one else. His whole career he's had like 20 really good games and they're all against bottom 10 defenses.

Again I love Daboll but did he try to change the QB? We have no idea but it isn't a good look and if we get 4-5 wins he's going to be fired which sucks.

It only made sense to stick with Jones because of the dumb contract they gave him.

How about the in-stadium entertainment yesterday?! Absolute $hit show there too:

1) The T-shirt mortar was firing blanks; booing ensued; it was rolled off the field hastily

2) The "guess that lyric" game with the giants down 21-6 on the jumbotron -- had them play the first 2 songs successfully, and then the third one there was technical difficulties with nothing happening. Entire crowd booed. Then the woman took the mic and started singing "Welcome to New York". And granted, she was good, but either it was a colossal F-up, OR it was designed to be that way. And if it was designed to be that way it was a very dumb concept as it was executed horribly and it was extremely awkward.

3) SKOL chants throughout the stadium throughout the 4th quarter with no music overlay or anything like that. Just SKOL --- SKOL --- SKOL

Repeat this 7 more times this year

There is an out in that contract after this season. Probably some level of cap ramifications but there is an out. He won’t be back.

Strong guess that barring some type of massively unlikely turn-around in performance (in other words - Giants would likely have to at least make the playoffs), Giants will move on from Jones after this season. They can cut him after the season and take a ~$22M Cap Hit. If they cut him after June 1st it reduces to ~$11 range cap hit.

Are there other incentives that they would need to limit by benching him at a certain point?

It's all about the money $$$$$ that's why he is still starting. Lock isn't any good either and we know what DeVito is. They tried like hell to move up in this years draft but the teams ahead of them just wouldn't bite. It takes two teams to make a trade. You can only give up so much with how many holes they have. After the surprise season in 2022 who else could they of used in 2023. I like Jones but he is broken right now. Like Carr was in Houston and I don't think he will ever bounce back. Time to move on. It's gonna be a loooong season ugh. I cant see Jones lasting past week 3 if he continues playing like this. The good news for him is they play the Redskins this week and he usually does good against them.

I replied to your original posts with stats that contradicted this narrative. He was as good late in the year as he was early.

Those numbers weren't good. You can't survive in the league throwing 1 maybe 2 TD passes a game. I'm so over Jones that I'm not bringing him up ever again. They'll have to figure it out.

Anybody else concerned Giants unprepared to start season 2 years in a row? Maybe not playing starters preseason not a good thing.

The resigned him.

I was referring to the whole team. It's just mistake after mistake in talent evaluation and deal making.

Looking back - Giants would have been best served stripping everything down in the first season after Gettleman left the team in a significant salary cap mess. What actually happened (them competing and gaining a wild card) turned out to be a disservice to the next season (apparently into this season as well). However hindsight is 20/20. If I recall there were pretty limited QB free agent options in 2022 when Jones was re-signed. Also the draft was extremely weak at QB with only Kenny Pickett being chosen in the 1st Round. Ridder and Willis were chosen in the 3rd round. None of them have panned out.

If Jones continues to be this bad - you will likely see a quick hook this season as both Daboll and Shoen seats will be heating up. However the Giants Ownership does not tend to make changes in the FO after only a few years.

I could be wrong but the main argument against replacing Jones at the time was “are we just going to start over again?”

And now we are going on 3 years later and wasted the years anyway.

The dumb argument was “well who is going to replace Jones then? We can’t just throw away the past 4 years.”
That didn’t matter. You take the hit and stink for a year or two until you get a potential answer at QB.
Took a gamble on drafting Jones and it didn’t work. It happens. Not every QB picks works. But you need to know when to cut bait and move on.
It was time to move on (which many fans said).

Instead, we’ve wasted the years and are still in the same spot: needing a long term solution at QB.

Its worth a mention that it was Shurmur who wanted Jones and pushed Gettleman to get him. Gettleman wanted Herbert in Oregon and flew out to visit him. Herbert decided to stay in college and not go for draft. Some said it was because he didn't want to go to Giants or NY State .

I genuinely feel bad for Jones. Not that he's helped himself since last January, but let's be honest, this is a total systems failure on the part of the entire organization. He didn't ask to get picked where he did and he's had the fans, the media and his own organization working against him from the start. Mara said it himself during Schoen's intro press conference: "We've done everything possible to screw this kid up."

In Year 6, he's played for 3 head coaches and under 5 playcallers. The only time he played behind a league average OL was in his rookie season. Since, he's played behind a bottom-3 OL, on average, for 5 years. Until now the WRs have been laughable (the unit as a whole may still be) - bottom 5 units each year.

He has the size, arm-strength and mobility to be an NFL QB somewhere. I just think he's mentally FUBAR here - and both he and the organization are to blame. The way Daboll and Schoen treated him this offseason, both internally and very publicly was a joke. Sunday was the absolute worst thing that could happen to follow all of it. Both sides need a fresh start in the worst way.

This is a very good summary. And I think a fresh start for all involved is probably best.

Just to clarify - what year were you expecting the Giants to cut ties with Jones and what franchise QB would they now be working with? By my count, it is very unlikely they would have a franchise QB from the draft. Maybe a trade?
  • 2021 Draft - after Jones 2nd season - Trevor Lawrence (Jax was not trading that pick). Zach Wilson, Trey Lance, Justin Fields, Mac Jones or Kyle Trask (who?) - LOL
  • 2022 Draft - after his 3rd season - Kenny Pickett, Desmond Ritter, Malik Willis or Zappe. Yuck. The only guy who has panned out so far is Purdy as the last pick in the draft.
  • 2023 Draft - after his 4th season - the Giants were coming off of a playoff birth and picked at #24. Young, Stroud or Richardson (not sure any of these guys were obtainable). They could have drafted Levis who may turn out to be better than Jones - but still TBD. Probably would still be in the same situation if they had someone like Levis.
  • 2024 Draft - After last season I could definitely see a QB drafted. Apparently, it was difficult to move up as the top 3 teams also desperately needed QBs. Giants could have drafted up with Penix, Mccarthy or Nix. TBD on if any of these guys will be a franchise savior or not.
With the benefit of hindsight - they certainly could/should have moved on from Jones - but not sure how much of a better position they would be in unless they drafted very high in 2023 or 2024.

Jones is about as injury prone as Saquon.
He's 6'5" in a league were tacklers are aiming low to avoid penalties.
Aim for Ray Rice's knees and then Jones' knees - easier to hit Jones low.
Eli knew how to turn into a limp pool noodle when being hit.
Jones looks brittle like raw spaghetti

Looks like RU grad Jude McAtamny is coming up from the Practice Squad. Gano either pulled a tore a hammy on the opening KO.

Close to a 10 minute drive for Washington to start the game. Multiple opportunities to get off the field, a couple with 3rd & long, but D hasn’t gotten the job done.

Jayden Daniels looks good, but he’s an injury waiting to happen given how much he dances around and holds on to the ball.

Held to a FG thanks to a false start….3-0 Washington.

Can I make the dumb old joke?

Remind me why a punter can't kick FGs.
Do they not have time with all the punting they do in practice?
