OT: 2024 NY Mets Season Thread

They were mostly productive bad stretches. He was resting! 🤣
Touche, but just to be clear, the bad stretch I'm excluding was 7 years ago.

The last 2 years prior to this he has played about 110 games total between the majors and minors. Though he did have some sort of shoulder injury in 2022. Looks like he hurt it in a brawl.

Look at Omar Narvaez as per why you don't look at a guys career numbers and say, this guy is good. Career .251 BA. .708 OPS. You have to be more selective then that. He was having a very nice career, but since his solid 2021 season he has been abysmal. Batting .206ish with a .590ish OPS over the last 2+ seasons.

Don't blame the Mets for hoping to find a reclamation project after one bad season, but the last couple seasons are now strongly suggesting he is done.
So you want to ignore most of Torrens’s career now? Maybe you should just use his 16 ABs with the Mets.

When did I do this?

But since 2019. Minimum 500 AB's. Amongst 74 catchers who qualify, Torrens .694 OPS is good for 29th amongst catchers. His .242 BA is 30th.

You have my endorsement to just toss Ramirez from this list and scoot Morabito upward a good bit.

Sproat 3.2 IP last night. 1 ER 2 H 1 BB 8 K. They're limiting innings so he only went 70 pitches.

Clifford a walk off HR for Bing. Also added a 2B and 2 walks. 13 XBH in 26 games.

I think the point is not to cherry pick stats. Then you get a full picture, not only the good stuff. For instance, you might want to mention his strikeouts.

154 wRC+. Takes into account all offense. Impressive even with the low BA currently. .212 avg with a .239 BABIP so avg should still come up.

On the topic of injuries to other guys, Verlander was scratched from his start yesterday due to next stiffness. For the sake the the Mets' 2025 finances, hopefully he'll miss a few more.

OPS does take multiple stats into account, but in this case, because of the walks and extra base hits, it hides the low BA. Was kind of thinking about this in regards to the Stanley Cup finals, and how Bobrovsky's save % is skewed by one game. Averages can obscure the details.

But yeah strikeouts are not in there and should be mentioned. A guy with his numbers almost surely has a high strikeout rate.

Ok I will. 30% strikeout rate. Coupled with his 20% walk rate, fully half of his AA plate appearances have ended with the ball NOT being put into play. Maybe he needs to be more aggressive early in the count?

A 20% walk rate is nice. But his Met future is tied to his ability to do damage, not to draw walks.

I'll counter this a little. I think most big slugging guys are expected to draw walks these days. It's not quite as good as a single, but it does to some extent take the place of a single for guys who are trying to hit with power every time up and thus just aren't going to hit many singles.

It also just helps raise the pitch count of the opposing pitcher which is the general strategy these days.

It's why the favored stat is OPS and not BPS(batting average + Slugging).

But yeah, he needs to be a guy who consistently hits for power if he is expected to make it.

Mets are starting to come around especially the hitting. The bullpen and starting pricing are still suspect, but of we can get to 0.500 or close to it by All Star break then we would be set up nicely for a wild card run. Also hoping for Senga comes back healthy and pitch well in the second half.

Correct.

The current formula is non sustainable.

Others in the lineup need to get hot as well starting with Alonso / Nimmo and Alvarez etc.
Last 7 games:

Alonso batting .087 with 1 RBI.
Lindor batting .130 with 1 RBI.
Nimmo is OK at .250 with 3 RBI, and 4 runs scored. Only one walk though.
Alvarez batting .143, 2 RBI.

I kind of see this as a good thing as they've been able to win while these guys have not participated. Hopefully a situation where they can build upon the momentum started by others.
