Fortunately, Astros would be on the hook for $18 million next year. They also have an incentive to not let Verlander get to 140 innings. I am sure they don’t want to pay an aging pitcher $18 million.
Not with the way the playoff structure is now.
And as an organization they have to start building some good will. Can't go the next 3.5 months playing garbage baseball and think we can sign some big name FA and turn it around next year.
If the likes of Diaz Lindor Alonso can finish this season strong, we have a chance, and if we can make even a decent run, it helps set us up for next season.

The Mets also included another $35 million to the Astros in the Verlander move, and if Verlander secures the 2025 option — which triggers if he pitches 140 innings in 2024 and finishes the season healthy — the Mets will pay for half of that, too, according to the New York Post.
Verlander has a player option for $35M for 2025, which vests if he pitches 140 innings in 2024. As part of his trade to the Astros, the Mets agreed to pick up 50% of this liability, i.e. $17.5M, IF the option vests and is exercised. So the Mets have a financial interest in Verlander not getting to 140 innings.
If the Astros should decide to become sellers, and trade Verlander, I wonder what happens to the Mets $17.5M potential liability. Does it transfer to the new team, or is it null and void?

I wonder if we see a Luke Ritter for DJ Stewart swap? Ritter was a 7th round pick in 2019 and is already 27. He's at .261/.367/.536 with 16 HR's after 2 more yesterday. He plays all over so would give the bench some versatility. Probably won't happen but also wouldn't be surprised if it did.

I thought they might want to give him more time there so if they made any move in the mean time Ritter would be ideal to see if he has anything at major league level.
He's fine at SS. Wouldn't really wow you there but has good arm and range. That should play up even more at 2B.
I honestly don't put too much stock in defensive reports of players in minors though. I've seen too many guys have bad reports who have been good to great at major league level and vice versa. No substitute to seeing them play every day.
Doc, you're telling me you didn't say to yourself here we go again. That lead went from 7-2 to 7-6 and it took a favorable bounce the Mets way to keep the lead. That BP is worse than a leaky faucet. No lead is safe. 🤣
He is more grateful to the Rangers organization for giving him a huge contract that no one was willing to give him. He only had to pitch a few innings and got a World Series ring out of it. Can’t ask for a better deal.
who knows if more grateful- but he got a great contract he couldn't refuse. Why can't he be grateful to both organizations? I never really get this
