OT: 2024 NY Yankees Season Thread

I would like to see a stat in MLB that tracks a "clutch RBI." That would be any RBI that results in a team pulling within a run, a tie, or the lead throughout a game. A subset could be CRBIs that occur from the 7th inning on when the pressure increases.

They already have this and I think is what you're looking for unless I'm mistaken. Judge for 2024.

Late & Close are Plate Appearances in the 7th or later with the batting team tied, ahead by one, or the tying run at least on deck.

Thanks Zak57.

Just what I was talking about. Did not know they kept stats like that. I think it says a lot more about the player than just his accumulated season stats.

Stats are there for pretty much everything at this point.

What a great feeling, when you expect the team to win every night, like our great run in the 90's
and Cole coming back soon. This team has great chemistry, charisma, fun to watch.

Saw this article the other day.
Just speculation at this point but Interesting take on what to do when Jasson Dominguez is fully healthy and ready for MLB. Obviously no place to put him in outfield at moment. But if you were to move judge to 1b to give him a rest you could make it work and upgrade defensively in outfield.

Not saying he couldn’t but has he ever played any meaningful time at 1B?

Give him a rest?? At first base?? What is this guy talking about?
And what are you talking about. Judge is a great outfielder.
I don't understand all this talk about protecting Judge. His biggest injuries were getting hit at the plate and and Dodger outfield.

Who had the best OF arms during your time? Which one would you never challenge if your life depended on it?
Reggie Smith
Ellis Valentine
Dave Parker
Andre Dawson
Dave Winfield
Dwight Evans
Jesse Barfield
Joel Youngblood
To name a few

You most likely had more speed then many of us gave you credit for. BTW- how much fun is it to run out a triple at the MLB level. That is insane when you realize how good even a bad OF is at that level.
Just like it felt when you did it in high school.
Completely amazing like your running on air

Only difference is many times in high school- played on open fields plus, at the MLB level- even a bad OF can chase down a ball like a deer.

Awaiting word on the extent of Soto's injury.
Also, not liking the pitching matchup tonight vs. Los Angeles.

I can’t even express to you how fast Billy Martin would have told Torres to take his uniform off and get out of his sight.
That’s after he challenged him to a fight

Recently read a Rickey Henderson biography. Martin was one of his first big league managers. 1) Per the book, Martin had a real soft spot for Henderson and treated him like a son; 2) other players not so much, Martin would get drunk and show up at their hotel rooms in the middle of the night banging on the door and demanding a fight; apparently it wasn’t unusual for players to kick Martin’s ass, and Martin would come crawling back for more…sort of a masochist.

Wrong about the match-up, as Poteet was great.
Unfortunately, Stanton 0-5, Rizzo 0-5, Torres 0-3, LeMahieu 0-4.

I was a teammate of Rickey’s.
He treated him like a son because he played hurt, never came out of the lineup, was the best base runner in the game by far, would give you the shirt off his back, never drank or did drugs… he was the 80s version of Willie Mays.
Do you not think Billy treated Mattingly like a son?😊

So true…Billy had some irrational moments but he knew who not to have them with.

BTW- Ricky may be the most underrated baseball players ever.

I was a big fan of Rickey, but please no comparisons to Willie Mays. I've heard people make a pretty decent argument for Willie being the best player ever. He was a complete ballplayer. He was possibly the best defensive centerfielder ever. And he hit for power too.
It's not fair to Henderson to compare him to Mays.

I was not speaking of actual performance Kbee.
I was speaking of his attitude and who he was as person and teammate.
Like Willie, Ricky couldn’t remember his teammates names, everyone was “my man” or “kiddo”
He was always laughing and smiling, happy to be playing baseball.
The times he was accused of being lazy or appeared to be not hustling were completely debunked when you watched him every day…

Fair enough.
BTW, my father was a big Mays fan and as a kid I had many back-and-forths with him as to whether Mays or my hero Mickey Mantle was the best player.

it's funny- my Dad lived in Brooklyn- he would still always argue the Duke, even though he was very wrong. lol
