hi all! wanted to see if anyone had suggestions for NJ courses with young professional memberships. Open to all suggestions, currently a 8.5 handicap and looking to play alot more this summer / fall

Currently in NYC but will have access to a car so in reality open to anything within an hour

Essex County Country Club in West Orange. Phenomenal course. Large number of NYC young professionals are members. Absolutely not stuffy. Gil Hanse is completing a course renovation this month. Top 10 course in NJ at worst. Oldest golf club in NJ.

How does it work if you are interested in becoming a member of a club? Do you need to be invited to join by a current member or do you just apply?

Do you get to play the course a few times before you join?

You asked this same question a year or two ago didn’t you? Can’t imagine much has changed.

If you’re Catholic, you can join ycpnyc.

Phenomenal course. I second this suggestion; especially for a young professional.

Worked at ECCC way, way back in 9th to 11th grade. Jack Mitchell, Head Pro at the time, believed the more you play the course and know the game the better caddie you'd be so in the summer as long as we didn't abuse it we could play on weekdays an hour after the last tee time. Loved the course, especially the Par 3's with the varying distances. IIRC, back then 9 was 130-140 and 15 was almost 200 with the beautiful 11th and 6th in between.

To add, I've told the stories about my experiences there before, including caddying in a PGA qualifier. One thing that stands out was "Long Jim" Barnes was the Pro at ECCC and honorary member there. He was called Long Jim because, unusual for a pro at the time, he was 6-4 or 6-5.He's a member of the World Golf HOF for his 20 something PGA wins, including 4 majors. He was a cantankerous old coot who the membership feared. We were told not to engage or even look at him. Every Sunday till he passed he'd be standing by the 10th tee watching players tee off. Many a wayward tee shot was hit under his stern glare.

Ok, back to the topic.
