OT: Copa America 2016

I'm with you, Jones looks slow and pretty lost out there - plenty of poor passes.

The defending on the corner was a disaster. Other than that, we have played pretty well. Just need to get shots on net. Had a pair of good chances with weak shots wide of net.

I thought the PK was a pretty harsh call myself.

How can we be this bad at soccer? It's not an athletic thing. We are plenty athletic. It's skill and imagination. We have very little of both.

Sorry but we have been bad at soccer for many years. Our kids play to go to college while in other countries they play to make a good team. CONCACAF is a sorry as group. The worst team in south America will beat the best team in CONCACAF. we need a good coach who can teach our players how to play ball control and pass the ball properly. I been waiting for the USA team to get better but I feel they are going backwards

Could not agree more. This program is in a Syracuse swirl down the shitter

Dempsey looks like a broken man
I thought the old guard of Dempsey, Jones and Bradley all looked particularly bad. The US needs to start moving on after this tournament because none of those 3 will be an effective player by 2018.

we watching the same game? we should be down 3-0, if that scrub didn't choke... we have no sustained attack
The movement and organization is there.

We just don't have quality ball handlers necessary to maintain possession nor the creative scorers who can make something out of nothing.

I agree none of those 3 looked good, but the youngins have to show they're better. Klinsmann just can't play younger players just because they're younger. In the central midfield Nagbe is an intriguing option going forward and hopefully he can step in, but outside of him there aren't many options. Zelalem could be in the future but he's only 19. So at this point you're looking at the likes of Beckerman, Jones, and Bradley (unfortunately).

And at forward I like Aron Johannson who's been injured and he Altidore, Wood, and maybe guys like Jordan Morris and Rubio Rubin will push Dempsey. But at the moment Dempsey is better (and healthy unlike many of those guys), so he must play.

During the pre game the announcers were wondering if the USA would get some home cooking from the refs, as often happens to the host team in these tournaments. No such luck. The penalty kick was a correct call but had the ref waived it off I don't think it would have been a big controversy.
Deep hole now, not just the loss but the -2 in goal differential. Costa Rica is a must win now.

The starting 11 right now should be;

Wood - Pulisic
Bedoya - Nagbe -Zardes (painful but he is the best we have until Green or Hyndman are ready)
Bradley (Zalelem is making quick strides and should take over soon IMO)
Same back line as today.

In a perfect world we find another defender so we could put Johnson up to mid field and get Zardes off the pitch.

Why the hard on for Zardes? He actually played very well yesterday.

The 2 guys who really hurt us yesterday were bedoya ( 1st Half wad baaaaad) and Bradley (not sure I remember him having this bad a game in a long time)

I agree that it would be great to have Fabian playing in the midfield.

Call me crazy but I think we were an eyelash away from dominating the game. We weren't crisp enough in the final third and had 2 lapses ( the first one was bad). I know the result is all that matters in tournaments, but I feel like we had big stretches of the game where we were clearly better than the #3 team in the world.

Now we need to go out and bead the ticos and Paraguay.

I am pissed we didn't win...but I am actually encouraged by a lot of what I saw because to me, it proves we are not miles away in the talent department.

Team played awful. Bradley's worst game that I can remember and Dempsey looks old.

Agree on Bradley

Re: Dempsey...you know how close he was to a hat-trick yesterday right? Yeah, yeah, if my aunt had balls she'd be my uncle...i am only saying he was a whisker away from having a remarkable game

Lol the US just beat Ecuador and thrashed Bolivia 4-0. No one listens to people who exaggerate and pull shit out of their ass.
Yeah we win friendlygames but when they count we play bad. I would love to see us win against good teams when it counts. We played a horrible game. We didn't score and had few opportunities to do so. If you learn about soccer then you will see the truth

At the World Cup we beat Ghana, tied Portugal (were winning til the 95th minute), lost 1-0 to the eventual champions (who thrashed Brazil by 6), and took Belgium to overtime before falling by a goal.

Thank you.

The irony is the guy suggests he understands soccer

Smh

Bradley and Dempsey are definitely out of form.

There's some truth to Klinsman's desire to push our players out of MLS and into more competitive leagues.

In our starting 11 last night, only four players were in MLS - Dempsey, Bradley, Jones, and Zardes. All but Zardes played outside of MLS for a very long time previously.

Bradley looked like dog shit. Jones is on his very last legs. Bradley's inability to connect accurately on even short passes just killed our attack before it even started. Jones played like his physical, aggressive self, but is definitely two steps slower than the last WC.

Fabian was dreadful at LB and provided very little going forward while letting cuadrado eat his lunch defensively. Zardes put in an admirable effort, but his touch is still questionable.

Bright side, bedoya played decently, aside from the first goal, the combination of Brooks and Cameron played well. Deuce still has some juice left, but might be the last squeeze for him. Wood made some nice runs, but definitely looks more comfortable centrally.

I wonder if we should abandon this 433 and play a 442 diamond with nagbe, Bradley, pulisic, and bedoya playing behind wood and deuce would be better. Rely on pulisic and bedoya to provide width and push wood and deuce into the channels. Ideally, I would want fabian at left mid, but we have nothing behind him at LB.

To those non soccer fans bashing the US Team.........

Why?

THIS IS YOUR NATIONAL TEAM.

this is no different the rooting for the guy who runs the 200m in the Olympics that you don't know him name.

Columbia is the 3rd ranked team in the world. There was a time in the not so distant past when the US would have been run out of town by this team. Instead they gave up a set piece and an questionable penasty shot.

They are good enough to win the next 2 and advance.

Regardless of if you like soccer or not you should be rooting for your national team.

End of story

I thought Bedoya was terrible, as was Bradley. Cameron was completely asleep on the first goal. Fast believing Klinsmann isn't the answer. The team seems to be regressing every time you see them play a meaningful game.

I don't know that it is the coach though. Columbia is a better team, period and I thought we hung in there well with them. We need more technical players and I think they are coming. Pulisic, Zalelem, Green (I still like him) Hyndman etc. There are players coming up. I am willing to give him a few more years to implement the young talent. What he needs to do though is develop these guys quickly. A team of

Pulisic

Green Zalelem Hyndman

Johnson

Carter Vickers Brooks Cameron Yedlin

*** Something like that would be nice if developed properly.

I agree with you. We had great world cup and I expected us to continue to improve but the last couple of games we have played badly and regressed

Not sure if you are agreeing with me but that's evidence that supports my argument.

The counter is: is it better to start on an MLS squad or ride pine in say the EPL or German league.?

Was agreeing.

And that second part obviously depends on the circumstance - first off what stage of the career and second how good is the team? For guys like Pulisic and Miazga at top clubs I think it's a great thing to practice everyday with phenomenal players in hopes they get on the field in the near future. If, say, a guy like Geoff Cameron was struggling for playing time at Stoke (he's not), I'd say it's better for him to come back to MLS and play consistently.

Maybe you don't understand the significance of the Copa America.

4 of the top 9 teams in the world are in this tournment. A good showing here matters on the international stage especially 2 years out of the world cup. It stead of saying yawn, maybe ask and look up what the tournament actually is. This is is a regional world cup

Bingo! America doesn't care about soccer, except on Saturday mornings so their young children can get out some energy.

No...... your wrong.

The US is enthralled with backing a winner and screw everyone else.

Meanwhile the women's game was sold out against japan.

Tell me what there attendance would have been if they didn't get out of the group stage last summer.

MLS attendance has risen annually the past few years as quality has increased.

People in the US care about soccer you are just too narrow minded to untamed the impact.

What it really comes down to is American entitlement.

We love to call our MLB, NFL, NBA, etc. champions world champions when really they aren't. To make a soccer reference, all of the best teams in the world compete in the Champions League, because all of the best club teams are from Europe. But the winners of the champions league don't declare themselves world champions, just European champions.

Just because we're not the best at soccer, most American sports fans say we suck and that we're not trying. Newsflash: We are trying, and we don't suck. There are other countries that are flat out better - more creative, more technically skilled, etc. but we do have solid players and have shown ourselves to be very good by getting out of the Group of Death at the last World Cup and advancing out of our group above England at the one before that. We lost by one goal in extra time at both, and were not far at all from impressively reaching the quarterfinals - which we did in 2002 before controversially losing to Germany, 1-0.

Americans need to get off their high horse and accept that just because we're not the best at something doesn't mean we suck at it, and certainly doesn't mean it doesn't matter.
