OT: Guitar / Guitarist Appreciation Thread

I was at The Stones concert last Thursday at Met Life. It was fantastic. Hard to believe they can still play, sing and strut around so well at 80 (Jagger/Richards). Below is the rendition of Gimme Shelter. The backup singer Chanel Haynes really knocks her part out of the park:

Tyler was born in NYC but mostly grew-up in Yonkers (Roosevelt HS) which was near Ashokan HQ.
His wiki nickname is "The Demon of Screamin" - guess that was dangerous at 75
I saw them in concert in c.1980 , just before I think they fell into their drug addiction abyss. They were awesome.

That "abyss" was practically de rigueur for rockers back then.
Personally I cant separate RnR from the drugs - they were rolled-up into one.
Even as a young cricket I saw somethin wrong then

One of the all-time greats. America's #1 rock band despite sucking for one decade due to drug abuse.
I thought Aerosmith was a good band, they had some great songs that got a lot of radio play. However, I do not (personal opinion) think of them as the top American band. I always thought they were a bit on the “commercial” side. When they first came out they were panned a bit for being “A Rolling Stones knockoff”. They did carve out their own place but The Stones influence was very apparent. I always preferred the more “organic” American rock bands with their own unique sound. I put bands like The Doors, Creedance Clearwater, The Allman Brothers, The Eagles, Steely Dan, Crosby, Stills &Nash , Springsteen/E Street, Pearl Jam among others at the forefront of American bands.

Well the Stones are my #2 all-time band, so Aerosmith did a great job if they were a "Stones knock-off" -I think prime Aerosmith was a bit harder rock personally. But yeh it's subjective, and musical beauty is always in the ear of the beholder.

Gotta add The Beach Boys to that list.

While driving this morning heard "Gimme Shelter" on the radio. I was reminded how the interplay between the 2 guitars at the beginning was truly stunning
On my list of favorite tunes....although it's quite a long list.
I think I have it pegged at #2.
Always reminds me of parties back in the day.

Entitled to your opinion, but John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and millions of others would disagree.

Brian Wilson is a legend.
There are millions of people who like many performers that I don't think much of. So ?
If I like it..it's good.
I actually had the misfortune to sit through a Beach Boys performance many years ago. They were on the bill at some local stadium concert (I think it was in New York) a bunch of us went to. We were there for Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young....who were great. Stills and Young together were some of my favorite guitar moments.
The Beach Boys were like a family harmony pop group. They weren't exactly rockers. Can they even play any instruments ? Not at all what I would ever enjoy.
Luckily we had plenty of smoke.

The Beach Boys played instruments, Brian Wilson was a multi instrumentalist and great songwriter. Rock music is certainly a broad genre and The Beach Boys fit comfortably in the genre. Always thought the “attitude” and “look” thing in Rock was overrated and an affectation in many ways:

^^^ You don't think that tune is lame ?
Who would cover that...Hansen ?
Next, somebody is gonna tell me they have a bootleg version of Stevie Ray doing it.

I don’t think it’s lame, it’s music and it sounds good. I don’t know who Hansen is. Did you ever hear “Riviera Paradise” by SRV? You probably wouldn’t like it, too jazzy.

And it's even less lame given the era that it was written and produced...

As lame as it gets.
I'll bet you "get around" too. Do they call you "the cruiser" ?
Do you know of any covers of other Beach Boys classics like Be True To Your School, Little Deuce Coupe, or Fun, Fun, Fun ? All hilarious tunes. And yes...we were laughing at them back in the Sixties too.
Honestly they're just the West Coast version of the Four Seasons....and I don't mean that as a good thing.
BTW, my friend just told me that they're playing in Englewood this weekend. I'm sure they'll blow the roof off of the house.

I'm never going to argue with anyone about music. Everyone likes what they like. Nobody is going to change anyone's mind.

THE Beach Boys aren't playing this weekend in Englewood. That's Mike Love and Friends.

I did not know that.
BTW, I've heard a number of people describe Mike Love as the biggest a-hole in the music business.
Edit...just checked...Bergen PAC is listing The Beach Boys as playing there this Sunday.

I never "got" the Beach Boys - seemed like a CA frat band with beachy vibe.
Alas I never got The Beatles either.

"I Get Around" and "I Want to Hold Your Hand" are both pretty bubble-gummy in 1964 .
I know Beatles played instruments and that was cool. Still a silly song

Ringo said the early 60s were great because he didn't know what he was doing but others didn't either. All the players were helping each other learn

True "I Want To Hold You're Hand" was pretty bubble-gummy, but I wouldn't rank it in the Top 25 Beatles songs. And I think George Harrison was 20 when they recorded it. Beach Boys were a California beach band, but they did better than "I Get Around" though much less prolific than the Beatles. "In My Room" was one.

Been listening to Blondie on Youtube. Fantastic band! Debbie has an incredible voice and look, and Clem Burke is my favorite drummer right now. They did multiple genres and had the first rap song to hit #1 ("Rapture"). Check out their Glastonbury concert.

" In My Room"...yeah, I'm familiar with that tune. It's very much like the Who's classic "My Generation" or the Stones "Sympathy for the Devil". Or The Band's "It Makes No Difference".

There's nothing I've ever heard from Stevie that I haven't enjoyed.

Whenever I feel old, I pop into one of the board's music threads and instantly feel 25 years younger.
I detect a hint of sarcasm, you don’t find debates about music made 60 years ago new and exciting? Here is some new music by someone who is actually under 50 (barely):

Speaking of old tunes - just read an article about album art and signs of renewed vinyl appeal.
I dont miss the stacks of albums but album art was kind of cool.

No album cover discussion is complete without King Crimson "Court of the Crimson King"

I read she recently turned 79. How could that be?

Heard back-to-back Zep on WDHA Double-Play Wednesday today : Whole Lotta Love, Communcation Breakdown. Was somebody throwing shade at the great rock music of the 60's-70s era lol.

Jane's Addiction singer Perry Farrell punches guitarist Dave Navarro during show.

One comment from news article

"Saw them in Atlantic City. Band was great. Perry’s voice faded early into show, and it was obvious he was on something. Hope he’s ok but thinking rest of tour is done. He needs help."

"The band members who play instruments constantly get betting over the decades of playing. Singers get to a point where they peak and then their instrument, their voice, goes downhill and they get resentful...Only a handful of singers who can still sing 40yrs later...And no singer sounds the same even 20yrs later because as we age our vocal chords change shape so you sound, pitch changes ..They get most of the glory early on then looked at completely different decades later..."

Any Albert Collins fans here? One of my favorite blues musicians, don't know how he's not in the Rock Hall of Fame.

Sounds like a rock and roll cliche at this point. Could be time to do something else. You have to be doing it for the right reasons, not to feed the aging ego.

Absolutely. Terrific musician. I think there are about 15 traditional blues guitarists in the R&RHOF and you could probably add another 25 , starting with Collins’s cousin Lightnin Hopkins. So many of the great players I grew up listening to like Hendrix, Clapton, Beck, Allman, Page, Santana, Winter, etc were all heavily influenced by those earlier blues players. I would read articles and interviews about those rock players and that’s how I learned about all the great blues artists who were not in the musical mainstream because of a lot cultural BS.

I didn't know they were cousins. Good stuff man.
