OT: Landing Lane Bridge To Close

I was about to say do I have deja vu, didn't we talk about this a few years back? I know there was a thread.

https://rutgers.forums.rivals.com/t...irs-until-mid-november-to-open-dec-17.220342/I'm a jackass, I started this thread back in 2021. And here we are again!

Except it's a different bridge. The old thread you reference refers to a single span bridge going over the Delaware & Raritan Canal; the current one is the bridge that actually goes over the Raritan River.

So in 2025 they will replace the entire bridge. Glad that is not my commute, and I thank them in advance for planning around the Rutgers football schedule.
I'm unfamiliar with the project, but working in the industry - if they are replacing superstructure and substructure (basically everything down to and including the foundation) for only $4-5 Mil, I'm fairly certain that the article is talking about replacement of the span over the canal that they just finished repairs to last year. Haven't been over there in the past few weeks but the article also mentions repairs to a concrete abutment at the southeast corner which was damaged by a vehicle crash - these are most likely the "new emergency repairs" (I'd imagine) - if you look on Google Earth you can see that these abutments actually extend over the water and are likely a structural component (which is likely why this work can't wait until the scheduled replacement).

What always got me about this small span over the canal is that (at least prior to the recent repairs) a pedestrian walking on the sidewalk could see all of the gears, etc that made this a moveable draw span - but there likely hasn't been a vessel on the canal requiring it to open since at least 1932.

So I was reading up on the Landing Lane Bridge: when they renovated it in the mid-90's, apparently they couldn't make it 4 lanes because the piers were not sufficient for that. And they couldn't replace the piers without the Coast Guard getting involved (because it's a navigable waterway) which would have added years to the project.
Never thought about that but 100% correct - while now unnavigable due to silting, the Raritan is considered "tidal" up to the Landing Lane Bridge (which is why you need a fishing license for the canal and upper portions of the river, but not below the bridge).
