This horrible December, for winter weather fans, is about to kick into high gear. After a cool weekend, it's going to get real warm around here by mid-next week with temps almost certainly into the 60s for Christmas Eve, Day, and the day after, with a shot at 70F in there somewhere, especially in Central/South Jersey and SE PA. I'd be really pissed if I were here, but I'll be in Florida for the holidays visiting family in Vero Beach.

Record warmth so far in these parts for much of the last 6-8 months (May, Sept, Nov and maybe Dec), as the Super El Nino is torching this winter east of the Mississippi and the west (especially Cali) may finally break its snow/rain drought or at least put a dent in it. Tough year for the NE ski resorts.

Meanwhile, Arizona was the coldest state in the US yesterday. Here is a scene near Sedona, AZ, yesterday, where the temperatures were in the teens. We head there December 24:

So we are basically screwed (winter weather fans) this year?

wait till the ticks and mosquitoes and every other bug starts up this spring and if the ocean does not get cold enough we might have some really dangerous storms....

I'll take a 70 degree Christmas any day.........this past weekend was outstanding....Also I must be getting old as I never thought I'd ever say that

Its been freezing here in SoCal. Yesterday I don't even think it broke into the 60's during the day and was in the 30's at night.

The ocean water is still warm though, which is a definite sign of El Nino. Surfs up, and the powder on the slopes is deep!

I thought the last major El Nino (97/98) brought a cold snowy winter to the NE or am I getting my winters mixed up?

Yep, definitely getting them mixed up - I think this was the winter after. The effect this year is the same as back then, with the weather patterns sweeping across the southern US, then heading northeast, bringing us warm weather and some rain.

Let's hope it's not like some major El Nino winters, like 97-98, where only ~5" of snow fell in NYC (and only about 2" in Metuchen). Most strong El Nino years feature warm/wet Decembers, but if high latitude "blocking" (a positive "Arctic Oscillation") develops, some of these years see decent snowfall in Jan-Mar, such as 82-83, which had 27" in NYC including the awesome 24" snowfall at RU my junior year on a Friday in late Feb - my favorite snowstorm ever, probably, since it was great snow and the Busch Pub was open that night and my friend's band played, since everyone was local - I recall snowball fights in the pub and it stayed open way late, since there wasn't anyone around to tell us not to - and I even got some that night, lol.

Forecasting El Nino and the AO are very difficult to do for more than a few weeks out, so stay tuned. And for those of you interested in data on NYC snowfall, here you go. Also, if you want to see the snowfall vs. El Nino years, the "Super El Nino" thread on American Wx has much of that data.

bac - I know you love warmth, but you also get that extra snowplow income - what do you root for in the winter?

Didn't read all that nonsense you posted there. Just make it snow for Christmas. There is no try; only do.

In 1998,it was 86 degrees at Shea Stadium on Mar.31,then it was in the low 40's at Dodger Stadium on May 12.I was at both games.

The 1983 storm was on Feb.11.I was going to the Meadowlands that night to bet a horse. The card was called off of course. The next week, the horse raced again, but I didn't bet due to the week off.He won paying $228.Story of my life.

I swear I can see buds forming back on some of my trees already. As long as they don't produced any more fallen leaves until NEXT fall I am cool with that. I may cut the grass yet again if this continues. Crazy times..

mildone Christmas dinner w/out a roaring fire sucks. I have huge wood and I am not happy.[/QUOTE]

Mildone set up the joke.
Now, who is gong to supply the best punchline?

IIRC from my days in commodities I'm pretty sure the "bad" (see: xtra cold and snowy) winters happen after the "La Nina" summers, not El Nino, as you state.

What is your long-term outlook for this winter? Some posters on American Weather are predicting a winter rally beginning in mid to late January. I think DT is as well on his Facebook page, but I haven't checked there in a while.

The cherry blossoms are starting to come out in Washington, D.C.
