OT: New York Mets 2024-2025 Off Season Thread

Well, if anyone were to tell me that we were going to replace him with Hernandez or Olerud in their day - then I drop Pete in a nano second.
But I am unaware of anyone currently available that could do that.
Also- as much as it may not make baseball sense- the fan part of me wants a guy that can put up some Met numbers that mean a damn thing. We have had only 4 guys hit 200 HR and not a single player with either 1000 runs or rbi...

I'm on the record saying that the Mets pretty much need to re-sign him, but it should be on they're terms. 3 years for 90 million is a great compromise offer. I think it will get done.

Also, I just wanted to say to everyone that I appreciate being allowed to talk ball in here even though I'm not a Mets fan. Offseason baseball might be as great as in season for me so I appreciate it.

I think Cohen is testing Sterns negotiating skills. Not signing Alonso would be a epic fail, or DEI win?

What if Vlady Jr became available via trade?

Also there is a Japanese first baseman who will post in 2026. Is supposed to be a monster, has over 200 homers at age 24. Probably a Dodger.

I've seen reports that most other teams in need of 1B are signing players. Less options for Pete. I think he will be a Met again.

1 year rental?

The positive thing I see with some of the news people are posting- 3/90 and Alonso and Bregman…neither may be true but one of the sides is trying to get some airtime. So, something may be finally moving

When Carlos Baerga posts it , count on it being accurate.

For whatever reason , he’s glued in!

IF the Mets have offered 3/$90M with opt-outs, then there's a deal to be made at 4/$110 with opt-outs.

Here is the question: Did Alonso really turn down 7/$158M in 2023, as has been reported?

If so...then since Alonso played in 2024 (his final ARB year) for $20.5M, the current equivalent of that offer is 6/$137.5M. Alonso probably views 6/$137.5M as his negotiating floor. He doesn't want to accept a deal that is not as good as the one he turned down.

Boras' job may be to convince him that 3/$90M with opt-outs is better than 6/$137.5M without them. WHICH IT IS! Provided that:

* You are willing to bet on yourself, and,
* You are good enough to back up that bet.

One thing we know: if Alonso truly believes he's getting $200M, as has been reported, then Boras would be well advised to disabuse him of that notion, pronto. Problem is, it's probably Boras who put that number in his head.

Alonso bet on himself last year and didn't back it up. I want him back but there is some risk there. Overall he's still one of the premier power bats and brings a lot to the team. I don't know if he's going to be stubborn now or he'll recognize the market is what it is.

How does this deal affect Alonso? I think he should get no more than 3/75.
Teoscar is 2 years older. Had an amazing 2021 and his “great” 2024 was only slightly better than Pete’s worst year.
I’m not sure why people and even Met fans try to compare ever other player to him like they are so much better.
Even in a crappy year for Pete- 34 HR 88 RBI and was clutch when it mattered.
If Pete is on the Mets this year- Nimmo/Soto/Lindor in front of him Vientos after him.
Do we really think he won’t be over 100+ RBIs for the next few years?

No he's not. Got a ton wrong.
All of these guys get a bunch of things wrong. But the real thing is…Pete rumors have been dead quiet and now we are seeing some noise.,,even if not accurate- someone is leaking these things. To me, that is the smoke that an agent does when negotiations are starting to get serious somewhere.
Bad news is- it may mean that he is close to signing elsewhere and Boras is trying to drive the price up

Very good point and certainly could be that. On the other side could also be people making things up. With more and more of the bigger FA names falling off the board I'd imagine we see a resolution somewhat soon.

Baseball is acting a lot like the NFL where you devalue certain positions with no real reason other then to control salaries. I keep hearing Pete is a right-hand 1B who is only a power hitter. If he was so below average, then why aren't there better options? This reminds me of how the NFL devalued the RB post by not drafting early or paying them in free agency. Now, the trend is reversing because it was hurting the team. Same can be said how a unique player's ability is more than helpful to winning. I recall times prior to the 2024 season where Pete was the only offense for the Mets during certain stretches. Pete in this lineup has great value and makes it dangerous to opposing teams. Each lineup is unique to that's team's make-up. Without Pete the Mets lineup and defense at 1B is below acceptable.

Also- looking at the number closer TH averages 47 BB and 197 K over 162 games- that is insane Pete is 69 BB 157 K not great either but almost a .340 OBP vs a .320 OBP
TH may not even be as good in the OF as Pete is at 1B.

I don't believe Pete should get an average above $25 mil per if the deal is 4+ years but for us fans to keep trying to say that Pete is on the downside or we would rather have someone else- I have yet to see a single player on the market that is not already signed with us that really is that much better than he is. And- what he brings to the lineup and the character of them team as well.

I would rather have Pete than Bregman. But he could have been secure has he accepted the Mets offer a few years ago. It’s gotta be on our terms now.

No, Damnit Burnes did not sign with the Dbacks. His brother Corbin did. 6/$210M with an opt-out after two.

It's been clear for weeks that he was not a Stearns priority.
Yeah I was just hoping that he'd be a Cohen signing
