OT: New York Mets 2024-2025 Off Season Thread

Remember one thing.
A few old timers on this board will remember this.
Candlestick from 1960 to 1971 was not enclosed.
The wind blew in from left and out to right center.
Mays and McCovey wore out right field pre 1971
Dale- I have no idea, but have there been any new changes to the park over the past decade or two that make any more hitter friendly?
Someone referencing Bonds doesnt really count as while on Riods, there wasn't a single park that was going to slow him down.

I just can't see a pure slugger who makes his $$$ hitting HR's want to go there. Citi is not a great hitters park but feel friendlier to a slugger like Pete. And quite honestly, the weather is much better...

I don’t know anything about the new park they play in now.
I’ve heard it’s a beautiful place, and is actually in San Francisco.
Anywhere is better than the swirling, freezing winds of the enclosed old Candlestick Park at night….lol

It is a beautiful park and while prone to the generally cool SF weather, I don’t get the sense it is as bad as Candlestick was.

Oracle Park is generally considered the toughest park to hit HRs in or at minimum one of the 3 toughest.

Overall offense it rates about the same as Citi the last 3 years.

Seems like Pete's options are getting smaller. Nats just signed J Bell and it looks like the BoSox are going with their youngster at 1B

Almost seems that Pete may be down to NY/SF - seems that Boras has made the mistake of over playing his hand with Pete. The best deal he will ever have on the table is the one he should have signed last year

I think I saw that too- For Pete- it has to be all about the HR and after that, the lineup around him and then, more on a personal level- the relationship with the city and fans.

Worst playing conditions both natural and unnatural of any stadium I ever played in… by far.
A full Down ski jacket and a strap on hat was needed for night games in July

There’s a big difference between cool and freezing 😊
Day games were Candlstick’s salvation, when the schedule evolved into majority night games it was miserable
Remember when the Giants came up with the “Croix de Candlestick” medal for fans who stuck it out for a certain number of night games or extra innings.

From Wikipedia:

“The Giants eventually played on the reputation to bolster fan support with humorous promotions such as awarding the 'Croix de Candlestick' pin to fans who stayed for the duration of extra-inning night games.”

at this point, if I am Pete/Boras - I may consider a 1 year deal and go back on the market next year when Vlad sets a new bar for 1B...

Not a bad plan at all for him. Will be interesting to see what he does. I doubt it will last until Spring Training starts.

No chance of that.

At minimum, he'll sign a three year deal with an opt-out after one year. Somebody will surely give him that.

I've often heard that if Candlestick was moved slightly the winds wouldn't have been as bad as they were, but had to be built where it was to make it earthquake proof -- and the Giants owner approved the site only being there in the morning when the winds aren't as bad.

sign Pete for like 4 years and go all out for Vladdy

they can rotate between 1B and DH

Mets aren't owned by the Wilpons anymore
Question on Vlad- how is his defense and how is he on the bases? We sign Pete to 4 or more years and we already have 2 DH 3 years from now...Though, a lineup with Nimmo, Soto, Lindor, Vlad, Pete, Vientos would be about as sick a lineup as you could get.

One of the worst defensive 1B in the majors if not the worst and an awful baserunner as well. Both have been getting worse as he's aged.

Speaking of the Wilpons- I had heard that Bernie Victim's have now recovered just over 92% of the money they lost to him

Another former Met player,Mark Bradley, has passed away.
His big moment was hitting a game tying home run against Fernando in the game after which George Bamberger packed it in.

It's funny to use the description of "aged" for a 26 y/o.

As for Vlad- he has had 2 monster years - 2021 and 2024

But let's look at both players as they both came up in 2019 and have almost the same amount of AB's.
Pete - 846 games and 3607 PA 493 runs 142 D 7 T 226 HR 586 RBI 17 SB .249 .339. 514 .854
Vlad - 819 games and 3540 PA 475 runs 177 D 6 T 160 HR 507 RBI 20 SB .288 .363 .500 .863

Pete is not as bad a fielder or runner as many like to say. I would put him just below an average 1B but while he isn't fast, he is a smart baserunner.

Vlad has shown he is more likely to hit .275 with 30 HR 100 RBI with a .800 OPS than repeat his two big years
Pete is more likely to be .240 35 - 40 110 RBI

I can understand the appeal of Vlad as he is only 26 but don't understand a $40 per year for him and people not thinking Pete is worth 25 mil

Pete seemed to be pressing the first 2/3s of the season. He may have been pressing due to the pending free agency. If elects to sign a one-year contract for next year and go back into free agency, don't we risk the same outcome.? sign him for 3 years or let him walk

I heard Tong has insane stuff
Sort of. His FB plays up a lot because he has crazy arm extension and he gets big movement on it. It's usually in the 92-95 range but can pop up. His CB is his next pitch which he plays well off the FB and has some bite to it. SL and CU after that which are works in progress.

On the subject of Mets prospects, here's a list which just came out. The only one to my knowledge which ranks from 1 to 50.

A lot of pitchers like this used to climb the ranks fast but in today's game- it seems you need to be hitting 98+ and 12+ k's per 9 innings to move up
The article about Luis Moreno was actually funny with the reference that he is "just 25 years old". To have just barely cracked AAA level (3 appearances last years) at that age, he's hardly considered young. He's not found on any top prospects list, although he may be soon. He didn't make his Dominican Summer League debut until age 20. That's a league in which the top prospects debut at age 16. Maybe he is a late bloomer and the Mets have something here.

Yeah- BoSox have already stated they are sticking with the kid Casas at 1B...toronto still has Vlad on their payroll...and if the writer is using those two as his big names in the article, I am sure most of the 8 teams interested are the ones we already knew of that have signed the other 1B FA's...Pete may end up somewhere else but it was a lazy article
