OT: New York Mets 2024-2025 Off Season Thread

The baseball love fest is
1)Ohtani
1b) Soto

How the F is Soto up for a gold glove? I’m surprised they didn’t create a GG for DH too lol

What is strange- I don’t remember Freddie Freeman being such a showboat himself. And been seeing him do a lot of dancing on that bad ankle

The Lindor trot was pure class
100% dead on, well said.

Be careful what you wish for MLB. This World Series has been a bore-fest. Borderline embarrassing for the entire AL.

It was obvious to all how easy the Yankees path to the WS was against the Royals and Guardians... the Mets needed to go through a solid Brewers team, and then the Phillies and Dodgers... night and day.

Doesn't really matter- they did get there.

I am hoping that Acuna, Alvarez and Vientos can become high level starters and Baty/Mauricio become serviceable players. In that scenario, given Stearns ability to be the POBO and Cohen's deep pockets, this team could become a juggernaut.
hopefully they all can get to their potential and we'll have a monster team even before FA additions

100% agree with choice #2. I don't want the lazy hot dog for 600 mil. The varsity can keep him

Rumors that Texas needs to cut payroll and that they may look to trade deGrom.

Well it seems that David Stearns has already answered my question! Here it is:

“He’s a great Met,” Stearns said. “I hope we have him back. I think we both understand this is a process and everyone’s got their own interests. And Pete deserves to go out into the free agent market and see what’s out there and ultimately make the best choice for him and his family.”

Translation: "Pete, I really like you, but I think maybe we should see other people. Y'know, just for a while."

If you really want to marry the girl, that is NOT how you go about it.

Could Alonso still re-sign? Sure. The Mets took the same approach with Nimmo. They let him define the parameters of the market, then swooped in with their offer.

But clearly Alonso is not on top of the Mets list. If he were, Stearns and Cohen would be doing all they could to make sure that Alonso does NOT see what's out there.
It’s a negotiation.
Sometimes if you want the girl, you play hard to get !

If you REALLY want the girl...
And if you know you need Daddy's blessing...
And if Daddy is named Scott Boras...
Then I don't think "hard to get" is a winning strategy.

That said, I really don't think that David Stearns is ready for commitment. Not until he plays the field a bit.

I have no idea how it plays out for the Mets and Pete but I am sure that Stearns does not want to be bidding against himself.
See what the market sets and then negotiate

Hey, was that kbee and superfan assulting Betts over that foul ball? Pay a $1,000 a seat, get to watch a 1/2 inning and spend the rest of the night in a jail cell. Brillant, priceless. Stay classy
Lol. Wait the best part was when the wingman was pointing at Betts as if he did something wrong! I almost wet myself I was laughing so hard.

Cohen has twice bid against himself, and overpaid as a result. Once for Lindor and once for Diaz.

The approach you suggest is more prudent. But when you allow a player to get to free agency, you are accepting the risk that you could lose him. Cohen was unwilling to accept that risk with Lindor and Diaz. He is willing to accept it (perhaps at Stearns' urging) with Alonso. As he should, IMO.

I almost wonder if Boras's failings with FA's last year also drives this.
I feel like the original off the Met's had on the table and Pete turned down, may be better than any offer he gets as a FA...If they can Pete for that offer now- I think they sign him in a heartbeat.
I also think Pete really does like the NYC life.

The 7/158 offer that Alonso turned down predated Stearns.

Freeman going Murph'esque has to help our cause. Alonso looked like the much better player in the NLCS due to Freeman's injury, but now, not so much. Thinking 6/162M to match will be required to get it done.

I also think that would a fair and pretty safe number/years- for both sides.

He is never going to be a .290 hitter but think he could average 38 + HR and 105 RBI for the length of it.

Much of what I post is not worth reading. I promise that this is. Best five minutes of your day.

Wow, Loved this. Hope he hits like this season and plays solid third base for the next decade

Now that all unpleasant distractions are out of the way, let the off-season adventures begin! The timing is excellent. We don't have to wait until tomorrow since it is already tomorrow.

I believe the Mets acted last offseason as the Dodgers did the previous offseason. Dodgers didn’t spend big knowing they were going all in for Ohtani the following offseason. The Mets acted the same last offseason to go all in on Soto, knowing they cleared a lot of money off the books specifically for this. I don’t think the Mets will be outbid, it comes down to Soto.

First order of business will be the 2 options. Maton has a team option($7.75 million/$250K buyout) so we'll se if that is picked up and Manaea has a player option($13.5 million) which he will 100% decline.

FWIW, the Mets writes for The Athletic are predicting 5/140M. Which is roughly the same AAV.
