OT: NJ Devils 2023-2024 Thread

Leave Vanacek in Vancouver!

Any more delays from Fitz are unacceptable! Zadorov showed why we needed him. Tanev is not just a top defensive defenseman, but a physical rival of Trouba. Proving my point earlier about special treatment, look at Smith's stick fouls that led to a 2 game suspension, and Trouba's recent baseball swing to an opponent's face! He only got a fine, NO SUSPENSION!

This is not just a goalie need. It is damning that Nemec was on the top pair last night. Our best defensemen are the younger guys i.e. Bahl, Hughes, and Nemec. However defensive coverage is inconsistent.

A look into Fitz's mindset after Hamilton went down. Elliotte Friedman has reported the Devils are pursuing Tyson Barrie and ex-Ranger/Flyer Tony Deanglo.

Enjoy the game, may our New Jersey Devils WIN!

He did not report that at all, he speculated because Dougie is hurt. Those are not Fitz type players.

Unless they do eventually address the goaltending situation, they have to ride Schmid. Outside of the SJ game where everyone looked awful, he has a 2.21 GAA and a .936 save percentage since November 1. With the back to back this weekend, I'm sure Ruff will split starts. Save Schmid for EDM on Sunday and put Vanecek in vs. CGY tomorrow.

Also, Timo Meier does not appear healthy. He's clearly avoiding contact now, which is not his game at all. I get wanting him back in the lineup, but that looks rushed.

I said he was rushed back prior to the SJ game. He’s a shell of himself.

Meier has only played 17 games and has a +/- of -15. Yikes.

Not Devils related but NJ hockey related - Marc Johnstone from Cranford made his NHL debut last night with Pittsburgh at age 27. Pretty unusual journey for a guy making it to the NHL. He went undrafted, didn't even make the USHL until 19, was named captain the next year, played four years at Sacred Heart where he captained his last two years, and then played in the ECHL and AHL until getting his shot last night. I used to see him all the time in my rink management days when he played on the Rockets, great kid. He probably won't stay at the NHL level, but it's always great to see the local kids get their day.

Good luck charm comes through again! After not showing up in the 1st, Nico gets his team to come alive, and #31 plays a great game for him.

Don't look now haters, but this streak has the Devils in the thick of things!

Don't like to see anyone get hurt, but this is a better team without Hamilton.

Was just thinking the same thing. Maybe move Hamilton to forward when we comes back next season? He's NOT a good defensemen at all...

At this point I agree 100%! Luke supplanted Dougie on PP1, which is the value Hamilton has left. Nemec has been a nice surprise, to be this good this quickly. The defense we need to add must be defensive. We have 3 to 4 offensive defensemen. What we need is to keep the other team from scoring.

That's awesome. Here's to the late bloomers! A lot of research now suggests that a bunch of kids who have serious potential are discarded by the sports machine every year just because they mature slower. Not many would have the persistence to deal with what this kid did!

Happened to my older one.

Not to the extent like this guy (meaning no pro aspirations) but he started late, for hockey anyway, and just got better and better.

Young man has been playing the sport he loves professionally. Guessing he got a free ride through college too. Stats really don't suggest there is a ton of talent there, but as I said, I'm sure he loves the game and he's been willing to keep on grinding.

I think any sport with a robust minor league system will allow for guys to find their footing and work their way up.

Football is definitely tougher, without much by way of a minor league, especially QB, where only one guy plays, and if you perform poorly you might not get another chance.

Basketball too, but they do have a the G league now, and overseas has always been an option.

At what level did he stop playing?

College.

He might continue in a men’s league at some point but not for right now.
What level college?

When you say men's league, do you mean actual minor league's or beer league?

I was just talking about this with a guy on my team. He played club hockey in college, then was burnt out from playing after college, and didn't start skating again till 27.

I didn't play much more then pick up roller hockey on the tennis courts when I was young, we did play a lot though, stopped playing at around 21, and then got back into playing again in my late 30's. On the one hand I missed the entirety of my prime years of playing, on the other who knows if I'd be playing now if I had kept playing way back then.

What happens is if you are a late bloomer you get tracked down in the club/development system (ie tier 2 instead of tier 1), and as you get older it becomes very hard to jump up a tier because there is a self perpeutating cycle of ....that kid didn't make a good team last year...so he must not be good...so we better not put him on a good team this year...and so on. If you have a great season they write it off as 'sure...but he was playing tier 2'. In Mass, the dirty secret is that team rosters are often times completely made before the tryouts even happen, so unless you are able to come in and be so spectacular that you are top line material, they just ignore you, no matter how you stack up against their 2nd and 3rd line. All of this just creates unnecessary barriers to late bloomers, and they get frustrated and then people are like....well that kid has a bad attitude, and so on.
