OT: NJ Devils 2023-2024 Thread

Take some time today and educate yourself on who was available on July 1 and who’s available now. We’d be much better if Fitz didn’t stand pat and brought in good depth to replace Graves, Severson , Wood and tatar . Tierney, Bowers, Cal Foote ? Lol

I’d reverse that Timo deal in a second.
He’s just terrible
I'd take Timo over every single one of those players at their current contracts

Graves - Was a causality of getting better. He's a solid player but he takes up a spot that a better player can take. There's a reason why teams take the next step after he leaves, not his own fault I will admit

Wood - An absolute idiot that costs you games by taking awful penalties in the offensive zone, got a STUPID long contract. Giving long contracts to 4th liners are a death knell

Tatar - Good defensively but just another guy, older, disappears in the playoffs historically

Severson - Laughable you even bring him up. Guy is a bum, has been his whole career. Countless own goals, an ABSOLUTE DOOFUS in his own end, might be the dumbest D-man I have ever witnessed. Massive contract from Columbus, Fitz got a 3rd rounder for him when we were going to let him walk for nothing, is Hall of Fame worthy lol. Benched his 3rd game with the new team after costing his team a game with another classic Severson dumbass pass. Dude is just a loser

If you want to kill Fitz for anything...kill him for hanging onto Ruff for this long, I'm right there with you. Other than that he's been very good

I’m not going to argue those points but who did Fitz replace them with?

Can you also address how awful Timo has been?

Proud and King are both right. Not that I think he's healthy (which is another indictment of Ruff), but Meier has been lousy this year. That said, I make that trade again and lock him up again today without question. Fitz did a TERRIBLE job evaluating the goaltending position this past offseason ("we're content") and was sucked into Schmid playing lights out in a few playoff games. He was also pulled in an equal amount.

The only one of those veterans I would've liked to have seen back is Tatar. None of the guys they're shoehorning into the bottom 6 have worked. Nate Bastian gets more chances than any fringe-NHLer I've ever seen. I was done with the Severson rollercoaster, same with Wood, and Pens fans are about ready to run Graves out of there.

Easy

Severson - Luke (our best defenseman this year that's 20 years old and NEEDED to play in the NHL, too good for NCAA and too good for AHL) Oh and we traded him for the 3rd that brought back Tyler Toffoli...our leading goal scorer w/ cup experience

Graves - Nemec, 19 years old and looks ready for the NHL time, hell he's on the PK, on the ice down/up a goal late in games

Wood - Lazar, probably our 3rd/4th most consistent player. I'd take Lazar's leg over 3 Miles Woods

Tatar - Holtz, really impressed me taking the next step here, was stagnant in the AHL, top 3 shot on the team at worst.

Re Timo, he's been bad, no question about it. But he is very clearly banged up. He was great in the playoffs, despite not putting up points, he was good at the end of last year too.. A skilled power forward that can keep up with skaters we have is very hard to find..again when healthy

While he underestimated the goalie situation, I am pretty happy we didn't give up any assets for a goalie. The asking price was extremally high. Look at the deal that Helleybuk got, I don't want to pay that to a goalie at his age on top of what it would have taken to get him for the Jets. Gibson from Anaheim? No ****ing thank you. Saros is the only guy I would break the bank for and Nashville ain't trading him..atleast not yet as Askrov isn't ready yet in their eyes. Maybe you take a chance on Markstrom in Calgary? But he's got similar stats to Schmid. I really think Schmid the long term 1. He has the right mindset, right positioning

If Tatar is here the reality of it is no Holtz. or 4th line Holtz which is a complete waste

Completely agree on Holtz. No way I'd take Tatar back at the expense of Holtz' playing time. But I'd rather a guy like Tatar get bottom-6 minutes over some of the plugs they've put there this year. Especially given his defensive strengths from the forward position. Plus Tatar was versatile enough to slot into the top-6 if you need to spell someone due to injury/performance - which we've seen a ton of this year.

Those are fair points

Keep in mind Nolan Foote was ready to play in the NHL, we had Tyce Thompson and Graham CClarke. I'd like to see Clarke get a shot with Foote down, but Nate has size which we really need

Nate is a very bad player
He’s a main reason why our PK stinks

Going tomorrow night.

Where to park? As it’s been a while.

Tatar scored his first goal last night in game #26. I don't think we have missed him at all.

The staff has been brutal for a few years now.

I'll never forget when Miles Wood had "bumps and bruises" and was out for the year
I'm sure the diagnosis the doctors gave Wood wasn't "bumps and bruises," that's just what they put out publicly. Whatever the reason may be, it seems they didn't want to disclose the injury. No NHL player is missing time over "bumps and bruises," let alone a medical staff's inability to treat such a thing.

Tatar's spot in the lineup was taken by Tyler Toffoli, an upgrade. Graves was not only too expensive, but the team made a decision to play the young studs. Same for Severson. We now have to deal with learning curves of Luke and Simon.

Vanecek's best game of the season last night. His rebound control is always scary, but he made some very big stops. I also think last night was the tightest the D has looked all year. And although he didn't register a point, this was one of Meier's best games. He does. not. work. with. Hughes. It's been the case since he got here. Once Lindy did the right thing and put him on Hischier's wing, he looked good. Finished with 8 SOG. I expect him to break out against CBJ/ANA this weekend.

Collin Miller was brought in to be a stabilizing third pair vet dman and missed what a dozen games to start the season. He’s looked solid paired with Luke . We knew there was gonna be some growing pains with Luke and Bahl playing meaningful minutes on the backend . Now Nemec looks solid playing 22 minutes a game as a 19 year old . Tatar misread the market and tried get a multi year deal, over played his hand, fired his agent and then settled in Colorado on a one year deal . In the mean time fitzy went out and got toffoli a shooter for jacks wing for scraps . Plus he had lazar nosek and Holtz for depth . Don’t really understand the love for Tatar when Toffoli and Holtz are so much better

Yes, I'd obviously rather Toffoli/Holtz get top minutes over someone like Tatar. My original point was that I wouldn't have minded keeping him as a depth piece so that guys like Willman/Tierney/Laberge didn't have to see minutes - on a deal that made sense. When healthy, I love this forward group and believe it to be as good as any in the league.

Fitzy offered Tatar a one year deal . When Tatar said no he moved on and got Toffoli . That’s on Tatar not fitzy

Tomas Tatar on parting ways with Devils: “A one year offer was on the table but I refused since I wanted more term. I only realised later in FA that it’s not possible this year. Then Jersey signed Toffoli and that was it.”
