OT: NJ Devils 2023-2024 Thread

Who woulda thunk preseason that rebuilding Philly was a much better team than the Devils. . But it’s reality.

They just can’t win at home.
Jack should watch more Crosby tape and learn to value the puck more.

Philly, Islanders, Rags and Canes all gained a point on us tonight.

The East is a gauntlet , it’s basically Christmas and the Devils are out of a playoff spot. 9 million dollar guy has no points in how many consecutive games?

The Devils are better, just a team that plays down to their competition. Jack Hughes turned into a walking turnover. Lindy would/should be fired, but Fitz is his biggest fan. The team takes too many games off.

This is all why I sounded the alarm early. If there is not a major turnaround, especially in Newark, we could well miss the playoffs, as we are closer to the Blue Jackets than the Rangers. Just consider all the points we lost to the likes of the Ducks and Blue Jackets. They must win the 4 point games moving forward!

30 games in is no small sample size and there's a lot not to like from this group. And yet despite the injuries to every core player, horrid defense/goaltending and boneheaded coaching, they sit just 1 point out of a playoff spot. They also have games in hand (in some cases, multiple) on nearly everyone around them. I still think PHI and WSH regress to the mean and CAR eventually hits their stride.

That said, it would behoove NJ to start making their move. 3 games left on this homestand before they play 6 of their next 8 on the road. They have just 3 home games between 1/6 and 2/6. Though at this point, that might be a blessing.

Dougie Hamilton is officially out to the playoffs, according to multiple reports!

I expect a goalie trade shortly after the roster freeze is over. Could be a trade for John Gibson and Adam Henrique.

Hooray for Nico! We certainly picked right, today Nolan Patrick retired from the NHL.

This makes Patrick a worse #2 for Philly than Pat Falloon! 😆

Well it looks like the Devils decided to take this week off. More proof Fitz should have been more active.

Merry Christmas, these Devils have checked out!

For my friends that don't have ESPN+ the second period was great. Timo Meier even had a goal. One more period to go.

How do you quiet a good power play? Answer, don't give that team a power play! Edmonton has multiple, the Devils none. Now if I use the holding on Bahl as the template, the Devils should have at least 2 maybe more. Also some of the "missed" penalties were from McDavid. Now this is the type a superstar rules Jack Hughes should also get, even though not quite McDavid! Games have been commonly called this way since we started so hot early on the PP.

This team is just crazy…

How they could be so dominant and then just suck.

5-3 losing…3 goals allowed in a minute

Damn 2 for Edmonton in 41 seconds. Now 5-3. 3 goals in 69 seconds, we need a good goalie!

At this point Lindy should pull Vanecek and play the emergency goalie in the crowd!

Sometimes old logic is sadly true, first instincts are usually correct! I had hoped against hope, my post changed the trajectory. Sadly this team only played 30 minutes again. Sleep walk for the start, storm back, only to take the third period off.

I never thought I would want Berube to be a Devil. Oh well I'm dreaming as I believe fanboy Fitz would not fire Lindy if he banged Fitz's wife. This mismanagement shows when ownership cares more about virtue signaling than actually winning.

We need a coach that has defensive structure, Lindy's system sucks on defense. Management is playing with fire as talented young players learn bad habits.

Lacking effort, defensive structure, and having crap goaltending is a losing proposition! To answer Zap's question, Marino was enabling Edmonton's desire to win.

We need a goalie and 1 or 2 defenseman. The good news is we have salary cap space and young talent to trade.

make the playoffs, which i am confident we will, and hope to be hot.

Might need a coaching change to jump start things unfortunately

We do need a new coach as the players perform at home like it is a vacation. This is why no consistency. We score but have allowed more goals than the Blackhawks. Our GM better be full throttle after the break.

I think you guys now realize I was right all along.

This is a highly flawed and bad hockey club

I don’t think it’s a bad hockey club. We wouldn’t be in the playoff hunt if we were bad,

I think we all saw since the first few games were very flawed defensively and in net.

Despite the loss on Tuesday night, I tried to remain optimistic, as they played a decent game vs. Philly. Last night however, leaves a BAD taste in my mouth.
  1. For the 22nd time in 31 games, they allowed the 1st goal - and gave up a 2nd in short order. This team starts flat every night. It's December and they're a young team - it's not their legs...
  2. Ruff pulling Schmid after 5 minutes is an "I don't know what else to do" move. Granted 2 goals on 7 shots isn't great. But 7 shots against in 5 minutes is a problem in it's own right.
  3. Vanecek coming in helped to steady things for a bit, but he still looks wobbly - even when the puck isn't going in. When the slightest thing goes wrong, the bottom falls out and he's a sieve. The way he played EDM's 5th goal was just inexcusable. Play Daws at this point. It'll be no worse and maybe he provides a spark.
  4. Whatever is going on with Siegenthaler and Marino should be studied. Just incredible regression. Siegenthaler is now second on the team in turnovers (to Jack Hughes who has his puck on his stick for 80% of the game). Marino is regularly out of position and has been puck watching for weeks.
  5. 19-year old Simon Nemec is the most steady defenseman on this team right now. That's a problem.
  6. Good for Meier for getting on the board and LOVED the crowd chanting his name. We need him and the fans should be behind him.
  7. Down 5-3, there was zero push. The game was over. Say what you want, but the team does usually fight back. They bailed last night.
  8. Meier's struggles have been well documented, but too many of the top 6 have gone quiet concurrently. Toffoli has 2 points in December. Palat has 3. Hischier has 1 goal in his last 6 and Bratt has 1 in 5. Jack has put together a few consecutive duds (he's allowed), but it's obviously notable when it's him. He is turning the puck over like crazy.
  9. Now 6-8-2 at home. That's .438 hockey. They're not going to play at a .666 pace on the road all season, so this needs to be fixed and fast.
  10. Carolina wrote the book on how to curb this team in May. The league read it. I'm not saying Ruff is entirely to blame. (Fitzgerald owns a lot of what is wrong with the defense and being fooled into thinking the goaltending was fine. Ferraro said on last night's broadcast that Ruff is guessing every night on who to start.) However, Ruff has made zero adjustments. Now 3.5 years into his NJ tenure and he's won 119 of 263 games. Slow starts and the same defensive mistakes every night are on coaching. At what point does last year become the exception and not the rule with this guy? It took everyone on the team having career years at the same time to get to 112 points last year. Brunette has a less talented Nashville team 4 pts out of the division lead by the way.
If they don't beat Detroit on Saturday and go 0-3-1 at home into the Christmas break, Ruff's seat should be scorching. It already should be.

With the lax atmosphere from the top down the Devils have come up with a simple formula. This is as follows-
1. Play only about half a game at home. To buckledown is too taxing.
2. Often play yourself into an early deficit, but don't forget to be charitable to your opponent in the 3rd.
3. We must NOT have any defensive structure or communication.
4. We must routinely watch the puck and leave opposition players wide open. This complicates our porous goaltending!

Now ultimately the buck stops at the top. It is great to have rich owners, but they have to want to WIN. Our GM is systematically downgrading his performance marks by inaction. Hamilton and Nosek have not yet been put on LTIR. What possessed Fitz to give Ruff an extension, other than his personal fanboy heart. If, as shown, you can't build a defense, get Jacques Lamaire and Scott Stevens as consultants with their priority being DEFENSE! What looked good last year is not an albatross, Seiganthaler and Marino have regressed so much, it appears Fitz bought way high. We don't have any defensemen worthy of a first pairing.

Between the bad management, with mixed up priorities, and these young players learning terrible habits, we now could be going from a 🏆 winning era to a era that will be a disappointing era of what might have been.

The first step is accountability!

They need to learn, there have been many more gritty goals scored in the NHL than pretty goals!

Well with the Devils in rinse/repeat mode I figured I would drop this recent development from Canada. The Devils brass have brought Marty in to discuss Montreal goalie Jake Allen. Apparently Marty likes him and he may be the target, and not Gibson.

It appears they want experience over potential, as Primeau or Askorov were previously discussed.

This season is playing out like '95-'96 for the Devils in the annoyance for fan's meter.

It's hard to rightfully question the officiating, when that crap is your 1st power play.

I love how they call the highstick, although it was, and not the Bluejacket for the stick to the mouth of Holtz, where Severson cleaned up.

Give the Devils a PP, waste no time to call another penalty on the Devils. I loved the no call against Columbus on the blatant trip in the first period also.

Since our hot PP start, we average a PP opportunity on about 33% what they should call. Interesting how there is usually a ref looking right at it.
