OT: NJ Devils 2023-2024 Thread

Sometimes the Devils fall in love with their pretty passing plays and forget to shoot.

Give Edmonton credit, they are playing a smart home game. Their goalie has been very good. If the Devils don't start winning the back half of these back to backs, we will be lucky to grab a wildcard.

Rumblings in SoCal about the Devils dealing for Gibson (G) of the Ducks.

I hate to call him that cause like I’ve said before..I’ve had plenty of good convos with him.

But I do agree his posts lately are very troll like. Sad.
He is very knowledgeable about hockey. However, he feels the need to troll. It is kind of sad!

Love that Lindy has Luke and Nemec against the mcdavid line.

A 19 and 20 year old against the best player in the world and doing a heck of a job

When will someone else aside from me have the balls to say it out loud.

Timo is not right. Was it the Trouba hit last playoffs? Something else physically ?

He’s a non-factor and for this team to even think about the playoffs that has to change quickly.

You hammer them for a bad pass, one bad power play, etc. You do this in games they win. I will accept your multitude of criticisms if you are willing to admit you root against them. No fan of a team is as critical as you are!

I still fail to understand why you are so critical. Also, you purport to bet against them on numerous occasions

The handful of times I bet against them in game , I’ve won the bets.

I’m not a novice sports bettor.

This team is an above average goalie, a physical/good defenseman and an upgrade to Bastian from being darn good.

Our GM has botched this season so far though and we’re in a perilous spot

A very accurate post! Please wait until they lose a game before you hammer them.

Agree with the needs. But you do realize there’s a wide gap between being “darn good” and as you love to say here plenty times “terrible”…

I think everyone else on this board realizes they’re somewhere between “darn good and terrible”…except you. Which is fine, but no need to continue to rehash your feelings, especially during and after WINS. Makes you just look like a troll.

Sometimes you just have to tip your cap, the Devils didn't let this game slip away, they got beat. It is games like this one in Edmonton, that makes those loses like the one to Columbus so bad.

If they don't start winning the back half of these back to backs, we will look back with disgust at year's end. Fitz needs to stop playing with himself and earn his money.

Fitz isn’t giving them the best chance to win.

No.

Fitz had a chance this Summer to solidify your roster, but instead of signing good players to fill spots he signed an overrated bust(Timo )to a long term contract

Who would you have liked him to sign? The free agency class was pretty bad this summer…

Take some time today and educate yourself on who was available on July 1 and who’s available now. We’d be much better if Fitz didn’t stand pat and brought in good depth to replace Graves, Severson , Wood and tatar . Tierney, Bowers, Cal Foote ? Lol

I’d reverse that Timo deal in a second.
He’s just terrible

Will do…Can you give me names which “good players” you wanted him to sign in the offseason?

Whatever I say you’ll come back with YEAH BUT excuses to defend Fitz

Homey don’t play that game

But I’ll give you one, Gustaffson on defense

Gustaffson is having a hell of a season and may turn out to be the steal of the summer for the rangers. Agree.

6 of the next 7 at home:

vs. BOS
@ CBJ
vs. ANA
vs. PHI
vs. EDM
vs. DET
vs. CBJ

But at 5-6-1 at Prudential Center, can they take advantage?

What level college?

When you say men's league, do you mean actual minor league's or beer league?

I was just talking about this with a guy on my team. He played club hockey in college, then was burnt out from playing after college, and didn't start skating again till 27.

I didn't play much more then pick up roller hockey on the tennis courts when I was young, we did play a lot though, stopped playing at around 21, and then got back into playing again in my late 30's. On the one hand I missed the entirety of my prime years of playing, on the other who knows if I'd be playing now if I had kept playing way back then.
I saw this all the time with the Tier 2 organization I worked for, kids would age out of youth hockey, a few would play college club, but most just stopped playing entirely and would then reach out to me like 5-10 years later asking to join our adult league. A lot just burn out after so many years of being on the ice 4 or 5 times a week, and then in their late teens and early 20s find other ways to spend their time. We also had a weekly adult clinic that had a bunch of beginners but also had guys in their 50s who stopped playing after high school and wanted to get back on the ice. Locally there is a guy who didn't start playing until his 50s, will be turning 80 in a few months, and still shows up to weekday morning open hockey twice a week. He has also taken it upon himself to make sure there are two goalies every time, which keeps everyone else coming.

What happens is if you are a late bloomer you get tracked down in the club/development system (ie tier 2 instead of tier 1), and as you get older it becomes very hard to jump up a tier because there is a self perpeutating cycle of ....that kid didn't make a good team last year...so he must not be good...so we better not put him on a good team this year...and so on. If you have a great season they write it off as 'sure...but he was playing tier 2'. In Mass, the dirty secret is that team rosters are often times completely made before the tryouts even happen, so unless you are able to come in and be so spectacular that you are top line material, they just ignore you, no matter how you stack up against their 2nd and 3rd line. All of this just creates unnecessary barriers to late bloomers, and they get frustrated and then people are like....well that kid has a bad attitude and so on.
Well as for Johnstone, he was playing Tier 1 growing up and was very good but I don't think anyone thought of him as an NHL prospect. You hit the nail on the head with the farce that is youth hockey tryouts. Usually the tryouts themselves are just a formality, and the main goal isn't to evaluate the kids, it's to get the parents to sign the contract while they're at the rink so that you lock them up before they attend a different team's tryout the next night. I'm not sure if it's like this up there, but in the Atlantic District, many teams hold "pre-tryout skates" a week or two beforehand which is where the parents bring their kid to check out a different team and the coaches start figuring out their rosters. This is technically against the rules because the players are still under contract with their current teams and therefore aren't allowed to participate in a different team's event yet, but everyone finds loopholes. Our team was owned by the rink, so we advertised it as the rink running a clinic rather than anything related to the team, but everyone knew what it was.

Back to the Devils, I didn't get to see yesterday's game, but I believe that is Edmonton's 7th straight win. Sometimes you just run into a team that is red hot.
