OT: Observation regarding Tattoos on College Athletes.

When I was young, which admittedly was a long time ago, the societal prejudice against tattoos was very strong in some quarters. I went through twleve years of catholic school in a conservative area, and it seemed every day we were actually warned to stay away from people with tattoos. IIRC one of the quotes from the nuns was "They are likely merchant seamen or criminals and dangerous." Fast forward to today and the attitudes are just a little more relaxed. :) In five to ten years or so I expect the tattoo taboo will be all but gone. My employer, a hospital, requires people to cover tattoos, but probably will cease to demand this over time. Things like this change. Prejudices linger, perhaps, but body art is here to stay and will increasingly gain widespread acceptance.

I did my first psychiatric rotation in the early 80's (StVincents NYC), one of the very first things that we were taught was if u see someone with tattoos - you're likely dealing with a "sociopath"..
all these years later it has become "the norm" and my oldest daughter has more than I'd like.
so label it what you would like.but, unlike long hair that was easily cut off, the tattoos bring a bit of cognitive dissonance since they won't look great on aging, sagging, brittle bodies as we age.

I don't have one and will never get one. I don't see the point of having one. That's just me.
If you want one -- go for it.
I do have one question. How much does it cost? How are they priced? By the square inch? Style?
I guess I could just google the question, but I want to here from you.

Since it's a slow time I thought I'd serve this OT topic and observation of mine to the Board.

First, let me say that getting a tattoo or a sleeve or whatever is one's personal choice. Everyone who is 18 or older can make their life choices. I am not here to defend getting or not getting tattoos.

For the purposes of full disclosure, my wife and I do not have any and our 16-year-old son does not have a desire to get one. But I have many good friends with tattoos, mostly a few, not a sleeve or anything like that.

It is interesting to see that for the Elite Educational Schools who play D1 sports… the Ivy's, Stanford, Northwestern, UCLA, Duke, Rice, etc. the vast majority of their student athletes do not have tattoos.

Again, not right or wrong, just an interesting observation.

Why is that?
Can’t talk about Tats without talking about Rapid Roy

Take a look folks. This is what happens to your brain when you mainline Tucker Carlson and Rush Limbaugh all day.

What's your problem with what I said?

I said a lot of people buy "status" and different classes buy different things.

Turns out, it looks like its mainly the extroverts who do this.. Do you have a problem with the Economist too?

PS. I like Tucker.. I started watching him maybe a couple times a week. Never ever listened to Rush. But you show me where any of those shows talked about this topic.

You don't have much to say on this topic.. cannot refute my thoughts.. so you stoop to identity... THAT guy is not on OUR team.. he listens to Rush.. Hey Everyone That Guy Listens to Rush!

You are so intellectually weak it pains me to think you actually TEACH.

You're so dumb you don't realize your "sneakers and rims" horsebleep is straight up boilerplate right wing racial resentment? The saddest kind of ignorance is a total lack of self-awareness.

It is evidently TRUE. Provably true. That is probably why you are so triggered by it.

I know you'll want to claim that I am talking about all blacks and so on.. which would make it racially motivated. I am not. I am saying that people who choose tattoos are like other people who choose to brand themselves in other ways.

All you have to do is watch what's going on in American culture. Its branding.. tattoos, rims, cars, sneakers.. it is a lot of people branding themselves. They are choosing an identity for themselves and advertising it for the world.

I also said it is true for so many people at all levels of the economic scale. Why shouldn't it happen to poor people and minorities just like it does for everyone else?

I don't "resent" anything about it. I just observe it. It is human nature.

How can you not recognized that? Why do you seem to have such a vested interest in claiming this is not true?

Is that your chosen identity.. someone to scream "racist" at everyone?

Was surprised by number of tattoos at Army Navy game. Thought the services frowned on obvious tatoos
It was a long time ago but when I was in the service the only officer I can recall with a tattoo was prior service enlisted which was when he got it.

FBI profilers used to consider tats on a dead, unidentified female as indicating a 90% chance of prostitution and/or drug use.

Back in the day on a guy it suggested time as a sailor. Merchant Marine/Navy - not yacht of course.

My daughter ,in violation of my wife's rules ("as long as you live in this house you will not get a tattoo"), got the below tattoo (" I am 18 and I can do what I want with my body").

I asked her why she got the number 30 as a tattoo. Apparently I am not hip as it is a sign for peace in India...who knew? That was the first tattoo, with much larger ones to follow. She continued to live in our house three tattoos later until she graduated from the mighty Rutgers where I also went a few moons ago.
