Yes Rory does get a pass because he's great with the media. When he stinks it up he sticks around and takes his medicine. No running to his car and disappearing off the course. After the round he made jokes about it like saying he doesn't normally carry a 3 iron or really need it so he figured "why not?". Also said since his play wouldn't get him on SportsCenter so he had to do something.
