OT: Season beach tags

Hopefully, I will be getting another mug for the cupboard 🏃🏆

I don’t actually earn the “first 100 finishers” mugs, my son does. But I get to keep them. And I always get a medal 🏅
I am usually on the land (ladies 😎) side, your left, as you finish.
Remember my first spring lake 5. Was mangled the night before. Buddy registered our whole group so we ran it even though we all felt like shit. He was the only one that knew it was 5 miles versus 5k.

We were all at bar A afterwards wondering why the 5k felt so long.
You can always tell at the finish line those who thought that too. LOL

Season passes for Avon by the Sea for the last 9 years since I retired at 60 years old in 2015. It was $100 each for my wife and I and now it's $55 each once you are 65 years old. We love the beach and that whole Avon, Belmar area. We were very close to buying a second home in Belmar before Sandy hit, then we thought better of it. PS. Also free parking unlike most shore area towns.
Almost bought a house on Garfield 1st block to the beach on a short sale back in 2015. That house probably more than triple in value now. I blame my wife for being too conservative.

Real Estate has gone up crazy since we sold 5 years ago and downsized. The prices are insane, I don't know how young couples can make it right now unless their starter home is a bungalow, lol. Houses in our gated community are now going for what we sold our center hall colonial for, unreal.

Some of the prices these towns charge are insane. A few over $100, but most seem pretty reasonable in the $20-$30 range. I recall Belmar back in the 80's was around $30 they have gone up to $80. Looking back $30 in the 80's was pretty high.
Island Beach State Park continues to be the best bargain and IMO nicest beach in NJ

@knightfan7 $95 in Manasquan!

FYI - been chilling in the OC area for the past few days. Dodged OCHS graduation ceremony last night for some boardwalk fun. Our little one went on Gale Force for the first time ever. She was so excited.

By the way, what's going on with the GSP between AC and OC? I thought the work was to expand to 3 lanes, but the work looks completed and still only 2 lanes. Any ideas?

Excellent! Weathers been great. NO idea on that GSP. They worked on it for 2 years and just added some storm drains I think

lots of extra resources needed in the summer beyond lifeguards... cops, EMT's, public works, etc
The seasonal property owners already pay YEAR ROUND taxes.

You have it reversed. A lot less resources needed in the off season. Schools and cops are tht two big expenses in most towns and the shore schools are empty because so few year-round residents and very few cops needed in the off season.

+1
Packing in more houses is a bad idea. The best shore towns are reducing the number of lots by merging them. Two old lots now equal one big lot. Plenty of room for a large house, pool, and backyard. Land use management is key.
Towns are not doing that. It is the buyers

Easier for those south of Brielle Rd unless you're heading into the center of town. You also need to know the set times it opens for boats. 😉
IDK, by bicycle, Brielle Road seemed to be a better ride, less traffic, and more fun summer renters for entertainment value. I think many of those summer rentals are long gone.

They are still there but fewer. Honestly if I didn't have a few friends who insisted I'd choose a different town. When I buy considering I don't have a million bucks to throw around I'll likely be elsewhere.

Well since you consider Howell “the Shore” you won’t need 7 figures to get something with size and land. 🙂

But in all seriousness…don’t sleep on Point Pleasant BORO.

I would only buy in Monmouth. With the bridges it's faster to get from Howell to the beach in Manasquan versus PPB. I think there is more value being closer to year round life like Asbury. But yes, if I was OK w/ Ocean County I would have more options for sure.

Outside of the high season, it’s not a bad ride from Point Boro to there.

Close to the Parkway as well.

And you could start in Ocean County and move north as you do better. The spillover that happened elsewhere (Belmar/Bradley getting better for example) will happen there (in some spots) sooner than later.

The problem is the lights and the bridges. I could be persuaded with a pool for a good price in PPB maybe lol.

So here's the latest on the bridge from The Board of County Commissioners.....

- Repairs are "expected" to be completed by July 4

- Closed to vehicles until repairs are complete.

- Navigation channel will be closed from 7am - 4pm M-F.

- "It's time to replace the bridge" which will take 2-3 years from design, appoval from various agencies, and construction.

I know how much people around here love the thing. It's a connection to the past. It's the only remaining bridge of it's type in the Eastern US and on the Registry of Historic Places but it's time to let it go.

Didn't realize it averages over 6,000 vehicles a day. That's more than the # of people in town.

Yes. Do you think the vacation houses are all filled in the winter?

My town has 39 kids in the elementary school. That is about 7 kids per GRADE.
We have over 1,000 kids in OCHS, it’s group 3. Hardly empty. There are also about 2-3 classes for every grade in the elementary and middle school. Obviously every shore town is different but OC has a growing year round population with lots of young families.

45 per grade is still small. There are school districts with 800 per grade.
And how many people live in those cities? This is a small town of something like 5800 people in 2.58 Sq Mi, 45% of which is water. What do you expect? 20,000?

Your original statement was most homes are empty during the year. While the beach area only was 30+ years ago when I moved here, it's no longer true.

OC is a huge NJ shore town based on year-round population. The combined Avalon/Stone Harbor school just "graduated" only 12 students from the 8th grade. They are heading off to the regional HS.

Anyone heading to Manasquan -

The Glimmer Glass Bridge (Brielle Rd/Fisk Ave) is closed for about 3 weeks for repairs.
What is the back story as to why this albatross isn't gone yet?

EDIT - I see your follow up post. That bridge is ugly and takes forever to go up and down. I think the people objecting are doing it based off assuming construction noise or diminished view more than any historical value that stupid thing has.

Actually to the best of my knowledge it's not just or primarily locals. The town gov't has publically stated they want it replaced. Locals know it's a public safety issue that can cause longer emergency response times when it's not operational like now.

It's more groups who don't want change and in some cases don't live here.
