OT: So were the US swimmers robbed or not?

Clearly they were not. Multiple eyewitness accounts place them at a club during and after the time of the alleged robbery and they have video surveillance footage of them returning to the residence well past 6AM and their statements to the police and others were wildly inconsistent.

The only real open question is why they would fabricate such a story.

4Real: To get mommy and daddy to wire over some more fun money..?

This story reminds me of the lecture we had for our interns every summer. Do not go into neighborhoods you do not belong in late at night waving cash looking for and doing things you will regret in the morning.

I would see it every summer. Some hotshot kid from wherever first time in the city goes out gets rolled maybe roughed up a little and claims he was mugged. Only to find out he was talking smack in a seedy bar/club/lounge trying to score drugs or a prostitute. The story immediately changed when you would tell them you either needed to call their parents or the police.

They got robbed, but the cicumstances are not what they represented. If they were at a brothel, they may bring home more than a few medals though....[banana]:airplane::fire:

Clearly they were not robbed and it was all fabricated because Ryan Lochte cannot go without getting some attention. Yes, he won medals this year, but it wasn't like before. He has been trying to save the spotlight for a few more minutes. Clearly from the report we saw last night on NBC, the timeline didn't match up. And if they were robbed why were they putting in their wallets and phones into the baskets when going through the metal detectors back at Olympic village? He said the robber touched a cocked gun to his head when he wouldn't get on the ground. Then he switched it to he pointed a gun in his direction. None of their stories match up as to how many gunmen there were.

My guess is that they were robbed, but it was not nearly as dramatic as Lochte made it out to be, and that they were all very drunk at the time.

theres two many alledged victims involved that if it was fabricated the truth will come out.one two guys can make up a story, and get away with it,not this many..if it was fabricated, the real story will emerge

That's what I told my wife, especially if they were being held in country. First thing to cross my mind was they were ripped-off by prostitutes.

robbed or not. lied or not. why are they being held? False Police report? Just drop it and move on.

There is now a report of a member of the English Olympic Team being robbed at gunpoint last night.

The English Olympic committee has sent out an email to all members saying they should not leave the village at night unless they have prearranged transportation. They advise against taking cabs going as far as stating "Rio is not a safe city".

I doubt it's a brothel. They wouldn't have reported anything if they were somewhere they didn't want people to know.

But it is ok for men's BB team
Swim team story seems fabricated to me
I can hear from the Russians saying the swim team can't hold their liquor in the water or out

Lochte is attention starved. Phelps crushed him in his only individual race and he wants some more media attention. They were wasted, did some stupid crap, probably got robbed, but the whole gun to the head stuff is a fabrication. He better back track now and just say he was drunk and embarrassed. I don't blame Rio authorities for pushing it - they've been dragged through the mud this whole Olympics.

Prostitution is legal in Brazil. If you aren't a USA hoops player or Phelps, I'm not sure the paparrazzi are going to be as interested. It's just a way of life there.

The USA ballers had a funny excuse though.

They have video of them fighting security at a gas station.

They were not robbed, they were drunk and stupid.

I have been to Rio. Granted it was when times were better economically there, but you can just tell some of the Americans there are same people who would tell you they were robbed in Times Square but really they were involved in shady crap. Didn't feel unsafe the whole time, but I don't walk around like a tourist.

These idiots destroyed their own reputation and make Americans look bad in the process.

Remember folks, there is a video of the incident. We all know what happens when a video is made public. Lochte and the others better have a mea culpa before the video eventually comes out.

Much better odds they were than not. We are talking about Rio.

Grabbing the guys off of flights trying to save face is making the country look worse.

How does 1 athlete out of 11,000 there being robbed make the odds of this happening better?

There's ZERO evidence that they were robbed. All the evidence points to them being drunk, stupid, destroying gas station property..etc.

Hardly a "robbery".

Lochte is dumb. Not news.

There are still three of the four guys in Brazil at this time, but not Lochte. I would guess the actual story will be coming out before long, and Lochte's version is not it.

The two other swimmers just admitted the robbery story was made up.

Now the question is, why?

I have been to Rio. It's a pit. Crime there is incredibly rampant. Anyone says they were robbed there the odds are very in their favor. Maybe they weren't. Not sure I trust Brazilian authorities to get to the bottom of it though.

I disagree with this thinking...
