OT: TV purchase suggestions

3D was different IMO. You could tell right away not everyone was going to want to put on a pair of glasses everytime they wanted to watch something. That market was never going to be as big as they hoped.

You will see cameras in TV's like laptop monitors have now. Imagine Skyping through your TV.

For people who have Xbox One this feature is already a reality. Calls come in during TV watching or gameplay as the Xbox One is the Hub of the media center. There will be separate aftermarket hubs out there, but like TV's with DVD players in them there will be ones to have an option to make it the hub of your media center.

Yeah, not a perfect analogy, although there were models without the glasses. On the other hand, not everyone wants to have a bunch of extraneous hardware and software in their TV, either, especially when it means paying extra.

Doesn't the bolded refute your original statement that all TVs will get smart tech whether people want it or not, particularly the bit about "optional"? And TVs with DVD players? Who owned one of those?

No not really.

Can you buy Tube TV's anymore?

That was a rhetorical - because, yes it does. If you're saying that it will be optional, then by definition it won't be included in every TV. So pick which statement you really support, because they can't coexist.

Tube TVs are apples to orange. They were replaced by technology that made TVs directly better in pretty much every fundamental way - better picture; much, much smaller, lighter construction; much more versatile, etc. Smart TVs just add extra features, unnecessary to many and currently handled better by standalone boxes.

I'm not necessarily disagreeing - at least if we're talking relatively distant in the future, as part of the broadening "smart everything" movement, but you haven't really presented any evidence. Do you have any or just conjecture? Because another did present evidence ... of movement in the exact opposite direction.

Vizio is actually going the other way and eliminating the in-set features (including the tuners so they're not even technically TVs anymore). They're a smaller player worldwide, but they sell about a quarter of the "Smart" TVs in the US.

Even with phones people are getting weary of all the crap. Apps used to be fun but now people realize they drain the battery and tangle up phones (especially when an updates craps them out). I think even newer smartphones are scaling back. People are also liking feature phones. I was late to smartphone scene and I'm already sick of texts and emails and having Google sharing my life with me.

I'm not talking about next year I'm talking the future. Things may be unnecessary to you but it is not for future generations.

Give a non-smart phone to a teenager and see how he/she likes it. It will be the same with TV's and other appliances.

My 10 year old plasma is on its last leg so time to start looking for a new one. Any suggestions or advice? I'm looking to move up from 49 inches to 65. Since we are in the BIG now, need to think BIG.

Wall mount and smart TV are must haves. I found this one that looks good, LGUH6150-Series 65, but oddly enough I can only find 1 review online which scares me.
I will give you great advice on your TV purchase. But first you have to restore the old avatar.

You don't have to use your phone. It had 5 HDMI slots, plug in a Roku and your cable box and your experience will be infinitely better than using Smart TV apps.

BestBuy Open Box unit. You can pretty much find what you want for a lot less. TVs are a ridiculous investment.
Not a good idea to buy a TV that has been blasting a picture 18 hours a day at much higher brightness settings than any person would ever use.

So no actual evidence, just pure conjecture.

TV might be replaced all together by the time that happens.
