My mother moved to the Princeton Area, and watching local TV is so different from watching local TV in North Jersey, which is NYC Centric. From Princeton down south Jersey, everything seems Philly Centric. Even Princetons New State of the Art Hospital on Route 1 in Plainsboro is affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania, which seems weird to me. It should be affiliated with Rutgers, imo.

No wonder why, most people in this vicinity grow up Eagles Fans, and many of the best football recruits in this area have chosen to go to Penn State. The culture here just seems very different from North Jersey. Any thoughts?

Been that way since colonial times
East Jersey/West Jersey
George Carteret/ Lord Berkeley of Stratton
NYC/Philadelphia (especially TV coverage in modern times)

Grew up in Hamilton. Got both the NYC and Philly stations... Seemed to be a 50/50 split for rooting interests.
Interesting, Bordentown was all Eagles on TV. When I would stay at my future wife's place I made her go to All-Stars to watch the Giants. She used to read a book in the booth while I watched the game. She was an egghead, now she's a huge Giants and Rutgers football/wrestling fan along with being an egghead. She learned the game by reading then would ask me questions. When she went to Rutgers she didn't even know where the stadium was.

We grow up eagles fans because it is right across the river. Players go to penn state, temple, etc., because either rutgers, until schiano, didn't recruit very hard in south jersey. Also, rutgers wasn't very good.

People in Princeton usually get both NYC and Philly TV and the town is about the same distance to each city. I have 2 very good friends who live in Princeton and my wife's father lived one town over for 20 years, so I'm in town a lot and from what I've seen and been told by these folks, Princeton leans a just a bit more towards NYC than Philly, despite having a sub shop called Hoagie Haven, lol. One of my friends commuted for years to NYC and he always said there were more commuters heading that way than to Philly. Also, Princeton is in the far NE corner of Mercer County, bordering on Somerset and Middlesex Counties, which are solidly NYC centric.

609 area code Mercer county I live in Monroe which is 609 Middlesex county and more of an NYC media market

It’s closer to Philly geographically. And all of South Jersey is more aligned with Philly.
As I said above, Princeton is not more aligned with Philly than NYC. As the crow flies, it's about 38 miles from Princeton to Center City in Philly and about 42 miles from Princeton to Penn Station in NYC and by train it takes a few more minutes from Princeton Junction to Philly than to NYC (both are in the 80 minute range), although one also has to switch trains in Trenton heading towards Philly.

And there's no way anyone in SNJ or CNJ would say that Princeton, in the far NE corner of Mercer County, is in South Jersey. South Jersey starts around Trenton (unless you're from Bergen County, lol, where people think NB is SNJ). And growing up in true SNJ (by Philly), Trenton was where North Jersey started.

Your mother is officially a South Jersey resident. Take her out for a Pork Roll sandwich sometime.
Central Jersey is Princeton south Jersey is Burlington county down. I get no NYC channels in Bordentown. Mercer gets both, Penn Medical merged with Princeton a few years ago, many RU people work there. My doctor is there and he went to RU. Trust me when I say I miss my NY TV. I work 10 minutes north and it’s totally different on TV.

I know many people in south jersey that have no idea they live in jersey and do not support RU. It’s all penn st and eagles and absolutely no NJ pride .

I just moved to North Brunswick this past year, and although we only get NYC stations I would say half of the residents are Eagles fans. I was shocked by how many Philly market fans there are here.

That wasn’t like that when I was growing up there. Giants or Jets back in the day, not sure why it has changed so much but every time we’re back up there and go to the green turtle I notice it more and more. Very sad

I lived in North Brunswick for 25 years and I knew no Eagles fans. Maybe people switched because the Eagles were winning, but it was definitely a New York oriented town.

They just won last year, it's not like the Giants haven't won in recent times. 2011 is not that far into the past , still this decade. Also see alot of Flyers flags/decals. Not much 76ers or Phillies, perhaps I just haven't noticed.

Interesting. I’m not from NJ originally, but always considered Mercer County to be south jersey. A lot of hoagies and wooder down there. NB is the capital city of central jersey.

Why is Princeton more aligned with Philly?
Because it is in Mercer County and Mercer County is part of the Philadelphia media market.

When they define markets, they define them by county. Maybe Mercer County could also fit in the NY market, and then people would be arguing that it belongs in the Philly market. They have to draw the line somewhere.

To the people in North Jersey who feel that there's no such thing as Central Jersey, everything that's "central" is considered South Jersey (like Princeton).

Ocean county gets both NYC and Philly stations. I lived in Brick for 7 yrs. I would say for rooting interests, about 70% NY fans esp Giants and Yankees

It is also part of the N.Y. media market Burlington changes to all Philly

Um there are people all across the state who don’t support Rutgers, not just South Jersey.

Also being an Eagles fan doesn’t preclude one from having state pride.

NJ Pride? Lolol.
Yes , I’m not making it up. That’s just my experience over the years. I have actually said something to a few who don’t associate themselves with NJ but live here. Very odd. They are always 5alking up Philly and downing NJ .

Growing up in Monmouth County we had NYC and Philly stations. I remember first moving there as a kid from NY and being surprised by that. It is pretty cool if your show is on but then gets interrupted you can switch over. I also remember thinking wtf is a hoagie when it was advertised lol.

Now with FIOS my parents got the same channels I have in Jersey City. Philly lost that battle.

Ugh we don’t get Fios here I wish we did so I can see all the N.Y. games get very few here.
