OT: Penn State maybe not so BIG in the future.

LOL!!!!!!!!!

Maybe you have the little brother syndrome in defending B1G Brother Penn State on the Rutgers Board.

Anyone can post content, if you don't like the OT topic you don't have to respond.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!
Cute deflection but let’s try answering the question shall we? Of all the places to talk about this you felt a Rutgers football message board was the place?

Mkay lil bro….

Your obsession with them is remarkably ‘little brother’.

You came to this board with the impression that you would get Rutgers fans angry at Penn state and just start another ‘I hate Penn state’ thread while making yourself look like a complete fool by reaching at branch campuses?! Bro no one cares about Penn State York, lol

Lord have mercy little Bro, worry about beating Toledo in your JOKE of a conference!

Globally Pitt is recognized as an outstanding University when compared to its peers both Nationally and Internationally.

US News "Best Global University Rankings 2024-2025" (some of Pitt peers listed below):

University of North Carolina #47
University of Pittsburgh #50
Ohio State University #61
University of Minnesota #63
University of Maryland #72
University of Wisconsin #74
Penn State University #96
University of Illinois #100
Michigan State University #123
University of Virginia #125

US News "Americas Best Graduate Schools" 2025 has Pitt highly ranked in many areas.

As an example ALL of Pitt's Health Professions (Medicine, Dental, Pharmacy, Nursing, PT, OT etc) have been ranked in the Top 20 by the US News publication. In fact if one compares Pitt Medical School Student Admissions GPA and MCAT Scores, they are similar to the University of Pennsylvania Medical School Admits.

Unlike most B1G schools Pitt is a smaller school with about 23,000 undergrads and 10,000 grad students.

I think Pitt will be able to maintain its student body numbers when the Baby Bust Generation hits.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!
Whatever list has UVA at 125 w/the aforementioned schools ahead of them should not be taken remotely seriously

OTTOMH, the following ones were most well known:
Berks
Hazelton
Altoona

Hershey has the hospital but not sure of campus

Buddy went to Mt. Alto and Lehigh Valley isn't far from the NJ state line
Didnt know they had that many, but cult gonna cult
There is a branch in Middletown, PA, about 5 miles from Hershey and Harrisburg, PA.

Virginia is a good school and AAU Research University but their annual research expenditures compared to other national and global universities is lacking from a Global perspective.

The National Science Foundations Ranks all Universities by Total R&D expenditures.

Again you may not like or agree with the facts but here are the numbers.

NSF Ranking by Total R&D expenditures:

Pitt ranked #17 with $1.398 Billion R&D
Virginia ranked #48 with $0.714 Billion R&D
FSU ranked #79 with $0.414 Billion R&D
Clemson ranked #109 with $0.286 Billion R&D

I guess other US and Global Universities spend more on Research and are therefore ranked higher in the US Global Ranking.

Yes that ranking is for their undergraduate school.
Good school but not a Research Powerhouse from a Global perspective.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!
Not going to argue any of that, but nobody in the right mind would rank any of those schools above UVA, let alone anywhere near them

Not to defend the Pitt guy but I’m a jersey guy that went to Rutgers and has lived it Pittsburgh for 8 years so I have some perspective.

Pitt is a very well off school. Its endowment is gigantic when compared to Rutgers with big donors and there is construction all over the place all the time and some big 20 year plan as well. It also practically shares a campus with Carnegie Mellon since Pitt basically birthed that school. That’s also a super healthy global school.

It actually feels very Rutgers there bc it’s an urban campus like college avenue is. What makes Pitt unique is that it’s kinda of the only game in town out here. Pittsburgh is like the Galápagos Islands where there are no good options of anything in a 60 mile radius of the place.

Thank you for comments based upon your experiences with Pitt, UPMC and Carnegie Mellon.

Most people are not aware of the scope and depth of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) and their relationship with the University of Pittsburgh from a coordinated research perspective.

UPMC is a $23 Billion World Renowned Health Care provider and Insurer based in Pittsburgh.

UPMC operates 40 academic, community and specialty hospitals, 800 doctor offices and outpatient sites and employs 4900 physicians.

UPMC Global Programs span four continents with focused efforts in China, Italy, Ireland and Kazakhstan.

UPMC is closely affliliated with the University of Pittsburgh which is ranked in the Top 10 recipients of the National Institute of Health (NIH) Research Funding since 1998.

UPMC is currently building a new 17 story $1.5 billion speciality hospital on campus which should be completed in 2027.

Even though you are from NJ we would like to claim you as a Yinzer (LOL).

I guess you just don't get it.

You are not the Rutgers Board Censor. As long as Board rules are not violated, people can post topics which can be discussed by other board members responding to the topic.

You may not like the topic and are free to ignore the discussion.

However, other Rutgers Board members have contributed to the discussion and currently this topic has over 2k views.

By the way, Max has a new highly rated TV series starring Noah Wyle which has been approved for a 2nd season.

Its called "The PITT" and deals with life situations in an emergency room in Pittsburgh.

Additionally, The Wall Street Journal last week published a great article raving about the new series "The PITT".

I was wondering if you read the article or saw any episodes.

Panther has been posting on this board for many years. Yes he obsesses a bit (a lot) about Pitt’s academic rankings, and also has much hate for PSU, which I don’t mind at all.
But he’s generally adding good content here that addds to the conversation.
So give it a rest please.

Agree Jersey, both series are good but I particularly like "The PITT".

Episode 8 of "The Pitt" was very emotional and jarring.

They also referenced Pitt Dr. Peter Safar who was credited as the Father of Modern Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and was a three time nominee for the Nobel Prize in Medicine.

You have to give credit to the people serving in an ER environment, tough job.

Not to disparage Pitt but many kids from Northern NJ choose not to accept admission to Pitt due to whats considered " questionable" neighborhoods. If Pa.bound they choose PSU. All my grandkids were admitted to Pitt but they and many of their friends turned Pitt down , those that went to that area, however did accept Carnegie Mellon ,it's reputation overcame. I always thought that area had some great things going but I guess lately those parents living in their cocoons don't think so now.

The trend in higher education is that smaller regional schools are struggling and state flagships are thriving. In Pennsylvania the regional universities (formerly teachers colleges) are consolidating. Penn State's main campus will be fine and it looks like they'll invest in their 7 largest branch campus. It's also why some of the larger southern schools (discussed in another thread) are doing well.
A lot of these obscure, no name private schools that aren't academic stalwarts are in deep, deep, doo doo over the next decade. I'm looking at you in particular, Rider.

Couldn’t care less about PSU.

But are RU-Newark and RU-Camden good?
Any concerns with them closing or in trouble?
Haven’t seen anything but just a general question considering the overall tone of smaller college struggling all over.
RU-Newark and RU-Camden are both in the Top 100 academically according to US News. Safe to say the RU satellite campuses are in good shape.

Actually, Pittsburgh is one of the safest cities in the United States.

KDKA News by Garrett Behanna Oct. 3 2023/CBS Pgh.

Pittsburgh ranked as one of Americas safest cities in the United States.

The research identified Pittsburgh as the #1 safest city with regard to property crime and the 3rd safest city against violent crime.

If he didn't have hatred for State Penn he wouldn't be a Pitt fan. Seriously.

I really wish that game could be played annually. It used to be the best football game among all the former Lambert schools, and it was a bitter rivalry. It would make for great September television when everyone else is playing their cupcake games.

I will give Pittsburgh that it's cool for a small city, the food is good, the views/hilliness are interesting and the COL is very low relative to most if not all other major US cities.

I did not feel unsafe once there.

I would feel safer there than Philly.

Agree 100 %
The most underrated east coast city IMO (if you consider it EC, some consider it Midwest)

Oakland is a cool neighborhood, especially to go to school in (Pitt)
Only downfall is no on campus stadium (wish they would have redone the old Pitt Stadium) so taking busses to Heinz isn't ideal

I would put in its own bucket in a way, I think Boston/DC/Philly have a chip on their shoulder about NYC but Pittsburgh is out there doing its own thing, and a lot of people don't know anything about it.

Yep agree, Pittsburgh is on its own island out there doing its thing
Cleveland not far but not close, another cool city that's pretty underrated

This. Like I said earlier I moved to Pittsburgh 8 years ago from NJ. I knew nothing of the place except the 3 sports teams and Steel.

It is such an underrated place. I tell people that Pittsburgh has the worst marketing of any place in America. It’s this hidden gem and it doesn’t align with what your reality is of it. I thought it would be a huge rust belt dump like some other PA cities but it’s 100% the opposite. There are crap parts but all cities have that but overall it’s way better than I thought.

It’s beautiful with nature and architecture. It’s super accessible. People are super nice. It has the grit but also has new investment and big companies and lots of young people bc it’s small and has a bunch of universities.

What struck me is there are like pockets of different white people. Like seriously there are legit polish and Italian sections bc the city is all disjointed with hills and ravens so there are all these different neighborhoods.

I thought to myself that Pittsburgh feels like my dad would talk about NJ in the 1950s and 60s. It has this nostalgia about the place.

That is a great overall analogy, love the city. I’ve been there a bunch of times and it is definitely an underrated gem in all aspects.

I think a Philly is having a ship on her shoulder with everything, especially being in the shadow of DC, but particularly in New York, but I do not think DC has a chip on her shoulder, nor do I think Boston does

Most people are aware that Rutgers is one of the oldest schools (#12) Queens College in the US founded in 1766 but most people are unaware that Pitt like Rutgers is also in the Top 25 (#24) oldest schools in the US founded in 1787.

To me they have always had more of a little brother complex versus us, which I don't think is particular to us, I think you'd find it in the Midwest with the smaller cities vs Chicago too. Less so on the West Coast because everything is further apart.
