OT: Why is Princeton Part of the Philadelphia DMA??

Because it is in Mercer County and Mercer County is part of the Philadelphia media market.

When they define markets, they define them by county. Maybe Mercer County could also fit in the NY market, and then people would be arguing that it belongs in the Philly market. They have to draw the line somewhere.
I would say the Northeast Corridor line spans the heart of Central Jersey. The Raritan Valley Line and North Jersey Coast line would also be considered Central.

The North Jersey shore extends to Seaside Heights and Island Beach State Park. Below that is South Jersey/Philly, with the possible exception of Wildwood and Avalon. P.S. Atlantic City ain’t the shore.

Agreed! Very sad.
When/IF RU FB starts to consistently have Bowl Game seasons and occasionally 9 win seasons,South Jersey will slowly slide to the North. It takes time and results to change a culture that already exists. Can be done. BUT it wont be easy.RU must start Winning again,

I would agree that south of Toms River is where South Jersey really begins

Once you get to where no one commutes into NYC

How's this for a crazy idea--New Jersey gets it's own Network Affiliates like every other state in the nation.

Someone please explain to me why the 8th largest economy in the nation has 0 network affiliates ?

Ohio, the 7th largest economy in the nation has 7 CBS, 9 NBC, 7 ABC and 8 FOX network affiliates.

What state would allow 2 other states to control their airwaves. Pathetic.

Back in the days before home games were televised my uncle would drive from Orange to the Elks Lodge in Pt Pleasant to catch the Giants on the Philly CBS outlet. Eventually he moved to Lavallette but by then home sellouts were televised.

And you don't notice north Jersey residents talking up New York and downing NJ? Really?
Not really interacting with too many north jersey people about. Just an observation I made no one needs to get bent out of shape about it .

Trenton Devils should never have been called that when the NHL team took over.

Should have keeped the more neutral Titans name of the predecessor.

Our biggest cities are all very close to NYC or Philly. I think AC used to have an affiliate some time ago. I think New Brunswick or Trenton should get one.

Yes , I’m not making it up. That’s just my experience over the years. I have actually said something to a few who don’t associate themselves with NJ but live here. Very odd. They are always 5alking up Philly and downing NJ .

Pride in the State of New Jersey is laughable. What exactly does NJ do well?

Back to the OP...

Any pilot who has flown in the area knows the real answer.

That's a hint. Any takers?

My mother moved to the Princeton Area, and watching local TV is so different from watching local TV in North Jersey, which is NYC Centric. From Princeton down south Jersey, everything seems Philly Centric. Even Princetons New State of the Art Hospital on Route 1 in Plainsboro is affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania, which seems weird to me. It should be affiliated with Rutgers, imo.

No wonder why, most people in this vicinity grow up Eagles Fans, and many of the best football recruits in this area have chosen to go to Penn State. The culture here just seems very different from North Jersey. Any thoughts?
You honestly thought South Jersey would be like North Jersey?

In NB in the 50's and 60's with antenna TV you could get Philly station channel 6 or VHF 17. Everything else was NYC. Don't remember any of my friends being Eagle fans.
My in-laws lived in Columbus near Bordentown and when I would go to the huge flea market, there was tons of Philly sports stuff and mostly Eagle/Phillies fans. The RT 206 corridor.

Princeton is in Central Jersey not South Jersey or North Jersey. Central Jersey is its own thing and while people in North and South jersey both want to claim it, they can't! Rutgers is also located in Central Jersey.

local channels (CBS, NBC, FOX, ABC, PBS)

In North Jersey you will get NYC local channels only
In South Jersey you will get Philly local channels only
in Central Jersey you get BOTH NYC and Philly local channels, browse around the cable box and you will find both.

The new Plainsboro hospital used to be in Princeton, they kept the Princeton name so that people could find it easily.
The Plainsboro hospital never had anything to do with Princeton University and Princeton doesn't have a medical school.
The Plainsboro hospital partner with Upenn to bring to 1st ever CHOP center in New Jersey. Then later Upenn took over the hospital.

In Plainsboro and Princeton you will find many Giants and Eagles fans. That is true for all of Central Jersey. This is due to having access to both local channels.

Incorrect.
It cant be incorrect it’s my experience with the group of people I am referring to . There’s no correct or incorrect it is what it is with that group. Maybe you talk to a different group and they are all in on NJ and RUTGERS but that was not my experience .

I just moved to North Brunswick this past year, and although we only get NYC stations I would say half of the residents are Eagles fans. I was shocked by how many Philly market fans there are here.

Having grown up in North Brunswick, I can safely say there were more Giants/Jets fans but still a sizable minority of Eagles fans. Always been that way. And even in North Brunswick, in the early days of cable TV, we got a couple of Philly stations on the old TKR system and could listen to all of that dead air on Phillies broadcasts.

In an even more obvious territorial play, in the past decade, Drexel Med started an arrangement with St. Peter's hospital on Easton Ave in NB as one of its teaching hospitals with signs, branding, etc whereas it was previously part of UMDNJ's teaching hospital rotation. I believe the Drexel affiliation was subsequently discontinued once Rutgers absorbed UMDNJ and got their act back together with RBHS/RWJMS entering into a partnership with St. Peter's.

Apparently, St. Peter's also has a CHOP affiliation as well so that presence extends further north than just Plainsboro, but up to New Brunswick as well.

Al

Princeton is NOT Philadelphia centric

I have lived in plainsboro for 19 years before recently moving ...right across route one

Princeton, West Windsor and plainsboro clearly has a New York bent still despite being equidistant from both Philly and New York. Comcast provides the new your channels and a coupons of Philly channels. Lots of commuters to New York ans far far less to Philly

It’s probably 63-37 in terms of sports alligence toward New York than Philly

In terms of alligence ...it’s not even close to penn state. It’s still all Rutgers. Once you get south of 195...that’s where penn state allegiance first turns up stronger.

West Windsor-plainsboro school system sends 50 plus kids to Rutgers a year.

Before the recent down turn in Rutgers football , you regularly saw Rutgers sports wear being the first team promoted in Kohl’s and Dicks and any grocery shop in wegmans would result me finding someone to take another yesterdays game

Find it very odd that you only have interactions with people from South Jersey who have no pride in NJ or Rutgers.

Sounds like you just have an axe to grind pal. These types of people exist up, down and across the state.

Central Jersey =
Middlesex
Monmouth
Mercer
Somerset
Hunterdon says hello
And the survey says...

As someone who grew up in Hamilton, with plenty of family still there, I can say without question that this comment simply isn’t true. There are actually more Yankee fans in Mercer County than Phillies fans, but I would say Giants and Eagles are about even. Mets/Jets maybe 10%.

Remember a very large % of Mercer residents come from families with NYC roots and huge #’s commute to NYC, more than Philly, on a daily basis.

Also before cable Mercer got BOTH NYC and Philly stations. All of them.

Also, please don’t confuse Mercer for any county south of it, thanks!!

Your mother is officially a South Jersey resident. Take her out for a Pork Roll sandwich sometime.

No, she is not as Mercer has never really been considered part of “South” Jersey (yikes man!), but she can still get GREAT Pirk Rill there!!

I agree but people Ive worked with from the north usually think central is south Jersey and people from the south think central is north Jersey. Most never heard of or even knew central Jersey exists.

Area code 732 is the definitive Central Jersey region.

There is some argument for sections of 908 and 609 but I think 732 is the truest definition.

The old Central Jersey Group 4 Conference from the 50's and 60's included Trenton, Asbury Park, Long Branch, Plainfield and Union.
Now according to newspapers sports sections, Hunterdon, Warren, West Morris and Sussex is considered West Jersey. They probably eat SPAM with BBQ sauce.

Anyone in here from or live in warren county? Just curious as to what they consider themselves. Central, north or neither. I’d almost think the culture there is more aligned with south jersey.

I'd imagine more like Lehigh Valley or the Poconos personally than South Jersey.

Central Jersey is really well defined by the geology. Anything below the Newark Basin (which is geological construct and has nothing to do with Newark) and above the northern border of the Pine Barrens is Central Jersey.
