Our NJ upper middle class to affluent kids

PSU parent might do better than Rutgers parents but when they graduate the Rutgers students make more than Penn State students. (60) Rutgers mid career salary avg $88k and (83)PSU mid career salary $83 k. PSU is more like (84) Rutgers Newark $82.8k but they have a better college experience with their white classmates.

Wow Montclair State ranked (216) mid career salary 68k.

As I mentioned before, I don't know of any Rutgers graduate that isn't successful. This might be the company I keep or possibly I think NJerseyen are more motivated or competitive due to being first or second generation immigrants like the Jews, Indians, Chinese,Italians, Irish or Polish.

Soooo looking at the title from OP, live in a town not lsted already, Northern Bergen Cty, quietly and consistently in the NJ Magazine list of top Schools in the state (top 20 normally) many yrs top 10. State titles in golf and tennis are the norm, but also strong BBall. Parking lot at HS is filled with Beamers, And other high end cars that are the "kid's car" (ours drive a VW). Expensive homes, yadda yadda, it fills the intent of OP I am pretty sure.

Starting in 10-11th grade it becomes all about APs, SATs and "your list". It remains that way right up umtil May 1st. About 5% of the graduating class (not bad ) ends up at RU from what i estimate. It is about an even mix of kids who academically fit in to an average RU student profile, which in our town would mean mean CP courses, not a lot of AP work, and othe kids that are academically strong. As May 1 approaches word gets around that the academically going to RU are kid's whose parents either didnt save for college or are making them pay, and they don't want debt. What strikes me is that an equal if not higher amount choose PSU, or UDEL, nothing against those schools, but why pay more to go out of state, for a "similar" education? It is heavily about the name. My last kid chose private, and it came down to a top name full cost or a slightly lesser name (but great) school with a scholie and a fantastic B school, the child took the lesser name, but struggled with the decision for bit.

I admit all my kids chose the private route, RU was there "safety". Scholies, helped defer a bit of the pain, we were lucky to come out the back side with no debt. Of note they grew up going to RU sports events, and since 2 of them went to schools without football, RU is the team they cheer for. I do think of all the great vacas we could have taken, but happy with the outcome (they are employed and doing well). Bottom line, RU winning in sports would not change where they go.

It seems to come down to name, and RU doesnt have it in the NJ schools. One point I always put forward is...."It was an RU degree that paid for their private schools" . That is not lost on them, and RU grad school may be on the horizon for one of them.

Can't really use these stats, I tried to when I chose a law school. They are skewed in favor on NY area schools. Great example is Manhattan College at 30, does anyone really think they are that much higher than RU?

Was the bolded part sarcasm or fact, I ask because I have heard my nephews friends talk about RU as New Delhi University (they are Indian) and I can imagine some white kids not wanted to go there if they have a certain experience in mind.

Apparently some Penn State students don't enjoy the diversity that NJ provides according to some post in this thread. I would agree there are some that want to go to a whiter school. I remember I was at a football game and a preppy black kid was on his cell phone talking about all the Asians kids at Rutgers. Pretty amazing, a black kid.

I was at an event at Haddonfield HS where about 25 seniors were introduced as well as their colleges. 5 of them are going to Rutgers. Haddonfield has a very good academic reputation and is the most affluent town in SJ. It is but a small sample of the graduating class but still goo sign. Two of the kids going to PSU did a "we are" chest bump.

If you also look at the data, you can also see that prestigious schools like Middlebury and Northwestern have lower mid career salary than schools like NYU- Poly. In fact, Rutgers which is more selective than NJIT has a lower career salary. This has to do with the majors that are offered at the school. STEM majors in general make a higher salary than liberal arts majors. There are more liberal arts majors at Middlebury, Northwestern, and Rutgers than NYU-POLY and NJIT.

I agree that the major determines the salary more than the school. All the time spend on finding the right school and less thought on what they will major in college.

I bet I know where that comes from. Many kids want to go to a school that has a good party scene and asians are the opposite of that stereotype.

If some kids dont want diversity, thats their personal choice, I never thought it was good just for its own sake. I would rather my kid went to the best school possible, like MIT, regardless of race.

HAHA anyone saying Asians don't party has outed themselves as someone who didn't go to RU and has probably not been in Manhattan after 10pm in many years...I was just on St. Marks last night...it's no wonder where these HS kids get these ideas from..

From what I've heard from Wall St. big wigs, they love RU grads and the work ethic they bring.

This is what you should be telling your friends who look down on RU.

Going to RU was a financial decision for me but it worked out amazingly. I love everything about my four years there, made a ton of great friends for life and had an amazing academic experience. I dealt with red tape exactly zero times. I made friends from all over NJ and the world. It prepped me for law school and the real world. RU needs to market itself better but it's up to us to get the word out on an individual basis.

The next time these people make an asinine remark, perhaps remind them that your Wall Street friends would beg to differ. It may spur a quick Google search and some rethinking and create a domino effect.

Harvard and NYU have large Asian student populations. Think anyone is passing on them because of that? You know black people can be racists too.
