Paul Mulcahy RU career

Sad he left. I thought he was RU and NJ thru and thru. Would’ve been nice story if he and Cliff two top NJ Kids had led this years Team to a sweet 16
He is NJ and RU through and through but his role is changing. He wanted the same role he's had so he's looking for a new opportunity.

Paul was a very good player for RU, always giving 110%, even when injured and he was especially important at a time we were building a winning program. He had flaws, but to deny his importance to building this program and to say he "sucked" or other such things is acting like a d-bag. Be better.

I appreciate the sentiment and liked Paul but he didn’t always give 110% or even 100%. In fact, his effort and mental approach was flat out bad a lot of the time, especially the second half of last year. He became a head case and that was too bad because he used to be the guy who loved RU and would have done anything for it. It all changed when he cracked so he walked. These type of guys enter the portal every year. Your typical hopeful reclamation project believing that a new start will somehow cure the mental disconnect.

but he hurt his RU legacy by leaving, especially waiting so long before entering the portal.
What would his legacy be if he didn't leave?

6.8 points and 3.8 assists per game. Didn't score 1,000 points or dish 500 assists in his career.

I'm not even sure why any RU fans are upset that he left, regardless of the timing.

When he entered the portal the reaction I expected was...
Goodbye GIF

I feel he was a good, not great, player for RU, but seen the writing on wall and left
I think Pike was planing to change the way TRU played and tat style of play didn't fit Paul's strengths very well.
I think he sort of was being replaced before he decided to leave and would have had a lesser role if he stayed

Rutgers was 73-52 Paul's four years at Rutgers. He was an integral part of the best Rutgers basketball teams anyone who is under 57 (!!!) has seen play in New Brunswick.

I think a more appropriate reaction from Rutgers fans would be:

It probably would have been if Cam didn’t abruptly leave late only to have Paul leave a month later.

I have to admit that you are not that far off. I would have the below players better than Paul from 1976 to now though

Geo Baker
RHJ
Cliff
Cam Spencer
Caleb McConnell
Jacob Young
Myles Johnson
Eugene O
Cory Sanders
Myles Mack
Kadeem Jack
Eli Carter
Mike Rosario
Quincy Douby
Ricky Shields
Herve Lamanzana
Rashod Kent
Rob Hodgson
Earl Johnson
Keith Hughes
Geof Billet
Charles Jones
Steve Worthy
Brent Dabbs
Tom Savage
Eric Riggins
John Battle
Brian Ellerbe
Roy Hinson
Kevin Black
Kelvin Troy
James Bailey
Abdel Anderson
Hollis Copeland
Eddie Jordan
Phil Sellers
Mike Dabney

Hard for me to include guys on an "all time Rutgers players" list who were here for 2 or fewer years:
- Cam Spencer was here for 1 season
- Jacob Young was here for 2 years and had 1 good season
- Eli Carter was also here 1.5 good seasons on losing teams, then 2 at Florida and another at BC
- Rosario also here for 2 seasons on losing teams before 2 at Florida
- Charles Jones here for 2 seasons on losing teams before 2 at LIU
- Brent Dabbs was here for 1 season

And Earl Johnson as a top 35 player and Mulcahy isn't? That's a head scratcher.

Mulcahy absolutely top 35 player in program history

What about Keith Hughes ???

Two very good years, but still just two years. Compared to the others I listed, though, he has the strongest claim.

To get on my "top RU players or all time" list in just two years would probably require an all American season or back to back sweet 16 runs.
Depends how big your list is and who is ahead of him . He was conference player of the year . I believe the only one we ever had

So, if a player comes to Rutgers, is one-and-done, earns all-B1G honors & is a first round NBA Draft pick it would still be hard for you to include him on an "all time Rutgers players" list?

Without more than that? Yeah.

If Ace makes first team B1G and goes pro after a year.... but we lose in the round of 32... it would be tough for me to put him on that list. Of course, ymmv.

If he got national honors or took us to the final four, I'd likely have a different opinion.

Kawhi Leonard is considered a Raptor great after just one season in Toronto because he brought them their first and only championship. If they'd lost in the first round of the playoffs, I doubt be making their greatest players lists after only having a cup of coffee with the team.

I know the landscape of college sports is changing, but it's high hurdle to get on any sort of "Mt. Rushmore" of greatest players in school history for me if you're only on campus for 10 minutes. That may start to change as we get away from longer term players to a more free agency world.

Meant Earl Duncan

Interesting. Thank you.

It means that our program is very hard-pressed to have a "top 35 players" list unless you count players from the women's teams. I've been a fan since 1976 and a season ticket holder for a lot of years, but we haven't really been a bball powerhouse.
Yeah, why 35? Makes more sense to talk about 20 IMO. This isn't a list of top rock guitarists.

No need to be a jerk.
Oh yeah, now I remember. The team captain who jumped ship a month after Cam left (who also left late). I appreciate his 4 years but unless lots of money fell into his lap the week he announced he was leaving, this could have and should have been handled way way way better.

Some posters just have a permanent residence on the low road. Yikes.
