Politi and Canzano: Schiano to Oregon?

Reaction has been pretty strongly against Greg.
I am not surprised in the least.

RU fans like him because he took a program that was nowhere and, after a lot of hard work, managed to nudge the program onto the path to respectability. For RU fans, compared to what came before Schiano, it actually WAS respectability. But we're intimately close to the program and have a very biased viewpoint.

To most of the rest of the country, RU is a nobody in football, still not respectable. They look at Schiano's record at RU and see barely about .500. They look at his championships as a head coach and see a goose egg. They look at his tenure in the pros and see failure.

So yeah, I'd be surprised if he got that job offer and more surprised if the Oregon fans, prior to any such offer, were particularly welcoming of the idea.

This is not to say I don't think he could be successful there. Maybe he could, particularly if he's learned to let a really good OC do his thing without oppressive oversight. I'm just saying that most people outside RU do not have the same view of Schiano that people inside RU have.

We are worse than a nobody to some. We are a punch line. I read something last night from the d-nozzle Pat Forde, that I will not link here:

"Expected Dumpster Fire of the Year: Rutgers (36). After going 4-8 last year (1-7 in the Big Ten play) and firing coach Kyle Flood, there were hopes for modest improvement under Urban Meyer disciple Chris Ash. Instead, Rutgers got worse – try 2-10, 0-9 in the Big Ten, with losses to Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State and Penn State by a combined 224-0. While this was quite disappointing, it wasn’t altogether out of character. Rutgers gonna Rutgers."

I laughed just a little.

I was trying not to be overly negative, but yeah. To get real respect from outside the program, we need to beat really good teams with some regularity. Like once per season or thereabouts. Just regularly showing up and competing without winning will only earn a little respect inside the program and from opposing head coaches. But players and fans are going to look at the record and who we beat.

Which is how it should be. No participation trophies in CFB.

I don't have a particularly clear recollection of how bad RU was perceived in 2000 to 2001, but comparing the records, it seems we are perhaps at the same place perception-wise outside of the Rutgers fanbase. Inside our fanbase, think we are in much better shape than 2001, but we are fighting in a much higher weight class than in 2001. Looking forward to steady progress toward gaining respectability. No matter who we hired as head coach, that instant respectability was not going to happen in one or two seasons. Those calling for names like Richt and Petrino (not that they would have come to Rutgers anyway) fail to appreciate that.

I.

Same could be said of Pete Carrol after failures with Jets and Pats. A case could have been made that USC was nuts to hire him.

Agreed on all counts.

True. I think other coaches can recognize that Schiano is a good coach, particularly a good defensive coach. And they can also recognize the nuance and context for his coaching record (college and pro). And I think he'll get hired as a HC again somewhere.

But I think that, if he's going to have success, he will have to demonstrate in actions (not just in words) that he's changed a bit with respect to his reputation for being overly controlling. Being a control freak is arguably a necessary trait in coaching, to a point. But there is definitely a point of diminishing returns and probably also a point of negative returns.

Pete Caroll wasn't exactly a failure with the Pats, 27-21, and he only coached one year with the Jets.

Coach Schiano's positive is that he has plenty of head coaching experience. His negative is that he never won anything.

GS is perfect for ND. He's a big Catholic with that Father Flanagan/Boy's Town approach. He's big on academics. He can recruit NJ and FL and now the Mid West. He could be second coming of Ara

Greg with the Father Flanagan approach and the 2nd coming of Ara Parseighian.

I believe that I have now heard it all on this board, yikes !

Schiano's agent is working overtime this week. Hey, he works on commission.

GS or any defensive coach could rule the PAC 12. No one plays defense except USC. And none of the offense only teams have won a national title.
