Don’t have time for a long post, so here’s a few quick hitters:

1. We held Nebraska to 67 points, which is 10 points below their season average. But our offense was so pathetic that we still lost by 11 points. A kingdom for some three point shooters. PLEASE.

2. Game balls to Woolf (despite 1-5 on FTs) and Gavin, who played his best all around game of the year.

3. A lump of coal and dog crap for Hyatt, Cliff, Simpson, and JMike, all of whom played like utter garbage.

4. I hate opposing players who are (1) good; and (2) have punchable faces. On Nebraska, that’s Tominaga, Allick, and Wilcher.

5. Next year can’t come soon enough. At least we will have a chance to win games by putting the cylindrical object through the round hole.

There better be a shooter coming from the transfer portal to take pressure off Bailey and Harper.

4/25 from 3 will not win games

10-19 from line

Cliff MIA

Simpson might be the worst shooting high major guard I've ever seen at this point. He's half way through his career. It's not getting better. The alarm bells have been blasting

Time for Gavin to start over Hyatt

JMike bad after 4 of 5 games over 50%. He's a freshman so it's expected he will have some games like this

Same story as many games this season. Dig an early hole. Too many players having bad games at the same time

Wolf finally has a good game now that the season is basically over and it's wasted

Gavin's defensive improvements very encouraging. Grabbing some boards. Attacked the rim well on a few plays too

Cliff, Hyatt, Simpson and Davis:

5/25 FG

0/8 3 PT

Absolutely horrific - you will not win games when your starters play a majority of the game and shoot like that.

Gavin may have had his best overall game imo. He was only 3/10 but played with great confidence on both sides of the court. His defense was good too.

Great to see Woolfolk out there doing well also.

I stuck the fork in Simpson tonight. Cannot ignore the elephant in the room any longer.
Stick your forks equally? How about JMike’s 0-6 and 0-3. Guess that elephant is invisible. Didn’t see Simpson’s 5 rebounds and a steal, numerous deflections and players dropping easy passes. Guess selective elephants.

No a big man is first and foremost and shooter second and hope that Gavin becomes the shooter we have been waiting for

Simpson is a very good defender but he cannot shoot the ball very well. How many times is he going to drive to the basket and get his shot blocked, he thinks he’s Geo Baker but he’s not even close.

I will take jmike all day over Simpson. At least the kid has heart.

the biggest red flag for me was earlier in the season - I think it was game two or three at home - there was a loose ball on the floor and Derek dove for it in a manner where he was trying to not get his face in the mix...and as a result easily lost the loose ball.

I would have benched him for the rest of the game.

Not sure there is a role for him on my team playing like that (and how soft he was today)

Frustrating because Nebraska was absolutely there for the taking.

Hyatt and Simpson.... there are no words for that offensive showing tonight. Hyatt bricking everything and Derek missed literally every layup.

But hey, Gavin (finally?) looked like he absolutely belonged tonight. Finally played with some fire. Needs to limit the bad shots but even on that point, I saw progress tonight.

Still hope for NIT bid, could see us knocking off Wisconsin and Ohio State if Cliff wakes up again.

Unfair to question Simpson's heart. That's one of his strengths IMO

Best thing about tonight was Gavin's play. And as S. Janowski said, he appeared to play with confidence at both ends of the floor. Nice to see him put the ball on the floor and attack the rim over Alleck. In the remaining games , if Mag can't go then Gavin should start. If Hyatt is bricking threes he needs to sit.. Finally, Simpson is such an awful shooter and he plays selfishly. It would be nice if for once he dished off to an open trailer on a fast break being led by him. Just once, please.

No one said JMike had a good game. He's also a freshman

Simpson is somehow shooting worse than his poor shooting freshman season

JMike shot 50% or better in 4 of the last 5 games prior to tonight. Simpson has 4 of those games all season

Why can't you simply admit Simpson had a bad game? If you asked Simpson, I'm sure he would say he had a bad game

For those knocking Simpson’s offense (rightfully) - he has a place on our team next year and can be an asset. He plays very good defense and he has elite speed and can run the court.

He has been asked to do way too much this year due to a few reasons.

I’m not sure why everyone is so quick to write off players and send them packing all the time. A successful team needs to be a deep team with 8/9 guys.

He just needs to come off the bench in a much more reduced role with significantly less minutes next year….and take less shots.

The only thing with Gavin was the last 6 or 7 minutes he had Hoinerg and Tonianga guarding him the coaches have to tell him to post them down low again that’s on our staff

Geo’s game also included a short step back jumper when he saw a big defender. Derek just drives into a crowd of defenders and throws up a wild shot or gets blocked. Pike played too much Hyatt. As I mentioned during the game, we should have played Wolf and Cliff together for 5 minutes to see how Nebraska would have handled it. We were terrible on the boards, they won the game with second and third chances
On one play they missed the shot while 4 RU players stood around the rim but couldn’t get the rebound.
This game was there for the taking if we just played semi bad.

The problem is that role should be Davis's next season. We don't need Davis and Simpson to both be defense, energy, hustle guys off the bench. We need a guard who can shoot the 3

From a roster construction perspective, it's not ideal to have Simpson and Davis. JWill isn't a 3 point shooter either. It will be a giant hole in the roster if we don't have a guard who can shoot

Dylan and Ace will draw a ton of attention. Teams will collapse on JWill driving. We need floor spacing 3 point shooters. Driving and kicking to Simpson for 3 isn't going to be what we need

This offseason is gonna be fascinating.

Kicking to Gavin may very well be.
Rather kick it to Simpson than Davis.
0-6, 0-3 and awful foul shooter.

We need a shooter for sure.

There’s so much uncertainty with what will happen to the roster and how many ships we will have available which is why I’m not ready to run Simpson out of town yet.

He is barely going to play next year. If he wants to play I think he leaves.I hear what your theory is but I am thinking if we have another freshman come in who steps up as the 4th guard then that kid has a higher ceiling than a 4th guard Junior player whose struggled as a shooter.

Even if we land someone from the portal who can hit the 3, you still don't know how that will shake out. Noah on paper would've been exactly what we needed and he was awful for 3 months. It will be very interesting.

Davis is a lock to be here. He's good friends with Ace. I trust Davis more to embrace his role as being a defensive specialist who is ok with limited shot attempts than I do Simpson

If Davis left, Simpson could be in that role. It's a roster construction problem to have them both be the bench guard options

5. Next year can’t come soon enough. At least we will have a chance to win games by putting the cylindrical object through the round hole.
The play by 3 of our starters , Hyatt , Derek and JMike was so so bad which made we question this starting lineup. Hyatt is 1-6 , and 0-5 from three and 2 critical foul shots missed and 2 points. JMike 0-6 and mostly bad shots including 0-3 from 3 which he should not be taking except on a kick out. Derek was 2-10 and another terrible shooting day but worse was his balance and footing was the worst of the year. His 2 fast break non converts hurt our chances to keep it close at half. I do not blame Cliff , who was just frozen out by his team. He literally was given the ball once all game on the block.
Why was JMike taking threes and early shots ? Why will Derek not play under control and set himself to shoot. He gets a nice steal and cannot convert on the fast break and threw another one up like a hand grenade. You couldn’t have a worse shooting and IQ game from 2 starting guards and our forward in the history of Division1.

Now I should be used to it but Hyatt is such a disappointment that it hurts my eyes when I see him on the court. Not only does he never hit an open three when we are struggling to score early , he doesn’t rebound as Nebraska missed a lot of their first 10 shots but Hyatt didn’t bother to jump for a rebound , he lets the other team get the rebound and the putback. Drives me nuts. Now second half comes and Pike designs first play for him for an open 3 and as he normally does , clank. Worse yet , when we are making the run , he misses 2 foul shots. You cannot have him starting or playing significant minutes. He does too many things to hurt us . I feel bad this is his senior year , feel bad for him , but his minutes must be limited. If he just has a decent game tonite , we likely win. But he never comes thru , especially on the road.
Pike likes his substitutions and likes to pull his starters after 4 minutes but playing Hyatt , Derek and JMike extended minutes was a recipe for disaster . We finally get a game where Wolf does a really good job offensively , on the glass , and defensively. We finally get a complete game from Gavin. He was active , he drove , he hit some threes , he rebounded and played good defense including some nice blocks.
Now why Pike didn’t play Cliff and Wolf together was disappointing. Jeremiah , Noah , Gavin , Wolf and Cliff maybe subbing in Austin for Noah should have been the players on the court. Bringing Derek and JMike and Hyatt back in the game and their playing significant minutes was a huge mistake in my opinion. Not letting Cliff become a part of the offense when a few buckets from him in the middle of the second half would have made a difference. Now Noah hit an early three and missed more but his failure to guard Kaisay during that 1-2 minute stretch also hurt. Maybe going to Austin to guard him would have made a difference.
10-19 from the line and 3 front ends comes back to bite us in the ass , for one of the few times on the road as we were 78% on the road compared to 61% at home coming into the game. Wolf hit his first one for and one but missed his next 4 including one and one’s.
Frustrating as hell as just another 3 or just a few damn offensive rebounds in the first half or just a conversion or two on the fast break or some foul shots and we get a different outcome tonight. All things we are capable of but fell painfully short tonight.

Look at nebraskas minute distribution. 8 total and only 7 with more than 11 mins. There’s a lesson there.

Every team is different. We don't have 7 or 8 players who are clearly better and playing consistently well enough to lock in minutes every single game

Enough with the whataboutism. Any criticism of Simpson is met with "...but what about X! Double standard! Hey, look at that shiny thing over there!"

Simpson played poorly tonight. His shot wasn't just not going down - it looked bad. He was hucking junk at the rim and praying it dropped. Even his first made basket was ugly and died against the bracket before falling in. Not being responsible for any missed 3PA/FTA is an indictment, not a feather in his cap - he went 2-10 from 2P range, managed no trips to the line (where he is most valuable), and took no threes. He threw the ball to Pike on one play. He had just one assist, and several poorly placed passes to teammates. This was a bad game on a general yardstick - but it was also a bad game on a "games played by Derek Simpson" yardstick.

Yes, other players had bad games, too - but that doesn't change the fact that Simpson did. It's okay to admit that - because every time he goes out and plays like this, and you defend him, you lose more and more credibility.

But we’ve squandered some games 4-5 mins in this year when we mass sub three guys in right away. Also there’s been many stretched where we’ve had terrible combinations of players on the floor. Our 5-6-7 minute scoring droughts are infamous and personnel has something to do with it. IMHO we are not deep and would still be better served playing just 8.

This was unfortunately the case this year. At one point, I had posted that Pike should shorten the rotation, on the ground that this is what most good teams do.

The problem — as you correctly note — is that we could never rely on the same 7 or 8 guys. Every player on this team is so inconsistent from game to game that Pike really just had to play the players who were playing well within individual games. Tonight is case in point with Woolf and Gavin. The Wisky game with Noah, who otherwise was a no show this year. Etc.

This is what you get when the entire roster — with the exception of JWill and I suppose Cliff — are role players on any other team. But we had many of those guys starting throughout the year.

Can’t shorten the rotation under these roster circumstances.

I agree with the subbing patterns and mass subs
