There are a lot of top high school wrestlers in the Open. Plus many younger college kids. The three RU recruits that I saw competing are Smith, Parkins, and Chapman. It is a great tournament that can be followed on Floarena. With Flo you can get text alerts when the wrestlers you want to follow are competing

Ayden Smith lost first bout to a Beat the Streets kid,
Tahir Parkins won first bout, lost second bout 12-2 to Larkin (who is an ASU commit) and won first consolation bout
Jordan Chapman won first bout 15-2 - He looked bulked up and a lot stronger.

Okay:

1- Smith was very undersized. He wrestled tough, but you could tell he's a natural 114lb'er.

2- Chapman is still raw. He bulked up 10 pounds. His two losses were to Big10 guys. The only thing that looked a little off is conditioning, though, there wasn't a point in which he didn't attack. Can't wait to see those double leg takedowns at RU!

3- Parkins had a very tough 2nd match. Larkin looked great at the senior tournament. Parkins looks slick on his feet. he's had a lot of nice takedowns and knows how to turn bodies. He ultimately lost to a Bishop McCourt kid (Herring).

This has been an amazing tournament. Can't believe how good many high school kids are.

3 Jersey high school kids are going for 3rd. place. 4 Jersey redshirt freshman will place.. Mullen (Va Tech redshirt) going for 1st place. Knox (Cornell commit), DeKraker (Northwestern commit) Henckel (PSU commit), Norman (Stanford redshirt), and Dellagatta (Cornell redshirt) all going for third. Ruiz, (Cornell redshirt) going for 5th.

An interesting fact to look at is how recruits and college wrestlers project based on points scored at the U20 open. Looking at the schools competitors are committed to and colleges current competitors attend, a projection can be made and compared to where colleges finished at the NCAA tournament,

We had three recruits (Chapman, Parkins. and Smith) compete and non of them placed in the top 8. None of our eligible college kids entered. I was hoping that Harer would compete as most top high school kids did. Does anyone know why we had a low turnout? Injuries? Attending a prom?

The results of the U20s were similar to the results at the recent NCAA tournament. The NCAA is folkstyle and the U20 is freestyle. Rutgers finished 20th at the NCAA tournament. If we had our eligible guys entered, it would have been interesting to see how we would have done.

Penn State dominated by 96 points. Then 9 schools were separated by 18 points between # 2 and @ 10.

Rank School Points
1 Penn State 151.5
2 Cornell 55.5
3 Missouri 46
3 Minnesota 46
5 Arizona State 45.5
6 Nebraska 45
7 Oklahoma State 40
8 Ohio State 38.5
9 Virginia Tech 38
10 Stanford 37.5
11 Oregon State 28.5
12 Columbia 28
13 Bucknell 22.5
14 Michigan 20
15 South Dakota State 18
16 Northern Iowa 14.5
17 Virginia 13.5
17 Northwestern 13.5
17 Illinois 13.5

Did Smith take a lot of bad losses?? I noticed he went from being the #2 ranked guy at 113 to now the #19 ranked guy at 120 according to flo.. now I know when wrestlers change weights they usually hover around their previous ranking but this was such a big drop off differential… maybe it happens more at the lightest weights in hs…
