Football Rutgers Football suffers first loss of the season, as Nebraska wins 14-7

Kyle ain’t moving a 4 guy gang tackle. I’m surprised there were no outside pitch plays or sweeps in our book to get him space to make guys miss
"Get him space"? Meathead Football means smash running back into the A Gap with no H back or fullback. All day. Worked fine against Howard & Akron, not sure what went wrong.

What happens when a call is reviewed at a Big Ten stadium?

The video replay official in a designated area of the stadium's press box communicates with the collaborative replay official (CRO) positioned at one of 18 monitoring stations in the review center throughout the game. The CRO is working on only one game at a time, but the replay supervisor, positioned on an elevated platform in the middle of the room, can be watching multiple.

The CRO illuminates a red tally light on top of a pole at the top of the monitoring station to indicate that a review is ongoing in their game. That draws the attention of the replay supervisor, who joins the audio conversation along with the game referee on a headset from the field.

It's the CRO's responsibility to use a touch screen interface designed by Hawk-Eye Innovations and the Xbox controller to find the right camera angles and positions to determine whether the play should be upheld or overturned.

The CRO has instant access to every camera angle provided by the TV network through Hawk-Eye's Synchronised Multi-Angle Replay Technology and immediately can roll back any of them without waiting for the broadcast to show the footage.

NCAA rules say the video has to convince the replay official "beyond all doubt that the ruling was incorrect" for the on-field ruling to be overturned.

Who makes the final decision on a review in a Big Ten football game?

The replay supervisor in the replay center has the final authority in games at Big Ten stadiums.

A pool of 11 supervisors and CROs employed by the Big Ten has combined for more than 100 years of replay experience, Edds said. They also have been involved in 64 NFL postseason games, including the last five Super Bowls.

Big Ten coordinator of football officials Bill Carollo, who assigns personnel both on field and for reviews, said he's trying to limit the number of games worked by a CRO on any day to two.

"There's fatigue in this business, and we want to make sure our guys are fresh and relaxed," Carollo said.

Unlike on-field officials, the names of replay officials both in the stadium and at the replay center aren't listed in the game's box score.

Based on the end of the play and the next play, there was not enough time for anyone in the sky to have reviewed the play from multiple angles. They should have paused the playing to take a look. The first replay for the TV audience look like it clearly showed KM and the ball were over the line before his knee hit. We got screwed. Unreal that there wasn't even a relook by the Booth.

It is apparent to me the Coach Schiano is the college football equivalent to Buck Showalter! He is good at coaching up players to win, but if you want to ever win big you must find the next guy.

Every time it looks like a special season, we never get it to come to fruition.

I didn’t realize that thought they could before, must be something that changed. So then the replay hq and/or official up in the box are the ones looking at every play to see what’s questionable.
Which is why you call timeout to make sure they look at it.

Risk/reward per schiano
(first.. not blaming refs.. we lost the game.. however... I hate getting screwed by the refs)

well.. that's one area where he gets it wrong. He doesn't count the cumulative effect of doing things in a way that is "playing not to lose". He's always been happy enough to risk it all on defense... Its too bad he never played or coached offense.

He allowed some long pass calls late down 14.. but we needed them earlier too while a Monagai run was still a threat.

I wonder about Athan's legs.. that brace. Is that why he's never keeping it.. not much.. or not doing much with it? If you are doing an RPO mesh when teh QB cannot run.. what kind of threat is that to the defense? How does that help the RB? Just go to a 2 back set with Monangai and Brown (or someone else) and always have some outside counter available. If they commit inside you'll hit em outside occasionally and make them think twice.

And some traditional screen passes might be nice.. swing passes to the RB.. again.. if you cannot count on Athans legs.

And can we teach Ajani to hold for kicks? Maybe he could have picked up 4 there.

They destroyed our run game with the nose guards and bringing from depth. That multiple 3-4 scheme gave us a ton of trouble.
How many times did kyle run the ball after the first quarter? I don’t know but my guess 9 or 10. 3 quarters after a huge start and he runs the ball only 10 times.

Every team comes in trying to stop Kyle. WE should not forget he’s on the field and treat Athan like he’s Peyton Manning.

It seems KC got impetuous. We were getting 8 yards with Kyle and stupidly he decided to shoehorn the passing game in as if our quarterback was Tom Brady throwing to Jerry Rice , Tim Brown, and Justin Jefferson all in their primes.

After this we were never able to consistently do anything.

Yeah.. if you fake to KM and then let Athan pass on 1st or 2nd it is fair.. but to put him alone in the backfield and not even use the threat of KM.. when KM was successful... that is sinful.

It was explained b10 coaches can not call for a review.
Coaches do have a challenge if you have a timeout like I was thinking. These quotes from a couple articles basically say that. All plays are being reviewed anyhow but they also have a challenge.

From the article

Rutgers had great chances to score but couldn’t until late. The Scarlet Knights’ second blocked punt of the game set them up at the Nebraska 2, but the Huskers held them out of the end zone on three straight plays after Monangai appeared to score but was marked short of the goal line with no challenge from Schiano. He said he didn’t want to use a timeout to challenge the mark because it was reviewed at the replay center in Chicago and he was told it would stand.

It didn't feel like it, but RU out gained Nebraska with total yards of 264 to 261. The play of the defense in the second half kept us in the game. VT won big against Stanford and Washington is beating Michigan. So those 2 wins looking better.
If you can't win when holding the opponent to 14 points and 261 yards, you need to rethink the offense. We waste too many plays with low % chances. Hopefully it was the wind that impacted AK passing game.
Strange play was when AK's brother was pushed into the returner that we were charged with 15 yard penalty. I think Schiano was also frustrated with the call. So it would legitimate on a fair catch to push a player from the kicking team into the returner and gain 15 yards.?

No, it’s not legitimate. If you get pushed into a returner, it’s not a penalty

I didn’t like the play calling during the game but I’m looking at the game stats now and I understand a little better why we weren’t running. We averaged 2.4 ypc - 78 total yards on 32 rushes and that includes Kyle’s early bursts. Once they added another defender in the box Kyle wasn’t getting through. It seems like some of our fans (initially me too) saw the first few drives and couldn’t understand why we stopped running. Nebraska was selling out to stop us and our coaches knew we couldn’t break through it with our rush. They were leaving openings in pass coverage but the problem was Felter ‘s absence didn’t give AK enough time to take advantage enough. We also had a bunch of guys playing hurt.

Defense showed up huge in the second half and gave the offense a lot of opportunities - they just couldn't capitalize on them.

@PSAL_Hoops - Re: the 2.4 ypc and 78 total yards... that includes 9 by AK for -12 yards, the result of several sacks. KM and SB went for 90 yards on 22 carries, for 4.1 ypc. We went completely away from the run in the 2nd quarter - not a mix back to like 60/40 passing, but nearly a pass-only offense for a stretch where AK just wasn't on.

AK also wasn't getting enough protection - but when he did make throws, his accuracy just wasn't there for most of today. He did drop a nice dime into Black's facemask, though.

Yeah I get that - but still. How many of those yards were collected on the first 2 drives? My guess is the changed up the D completely and that’s why we came out throwing and ended up putting AK in a position that resulted in him gunning 37 passes. Forget the bad spot. We had 2nd and inches and couldn’t punch the ball into the end zone in 3 more tries. That should tell everything you need to know. They completely shut down the run game Q2-4.

Monangai rushed 8 times in the first two series for 74 yards, and Sam Brown rushed 2 times to contribute 7 more (and the fake FG was a rush for 0 yards). In those first two drives, Kaliakmanis attempted 4 passes (1 rec for 7 yards). In those first two drives, excluding the fake FG, we had 10 rush plays and 4 pass plays (71% rush)

In the 3rd drive, we did not attempt a single rush from a RB. 7 passes, and 1 QB rush. Resulted in a 52 yard missed FG attempt.
In the 4th drive, we had a KM rush for 2 yards, then 3 passes in a row, ending with an INT.
In the 5th drive, we had a KM rush for -1 yards, then 4 pass calls in a row (1 ending in a QB scramble), ending with an INT.

So, we went from 10 rush / 4 pass in the first two drives to 14 pass / 3 rush in the next two drives (18% rush attempts). We had only two touches for KM, who had averaged 9.3 ypc on the first two possessions).

I get that the play calling was responding to a defensive shift... but it wasn't that they were stuffing our run on those drives, we just weren't even handing the ball off. We chose to go almost completely away from the run after the first 2 drives, and our offense sputtered.

On the 6th drive, we had 2 rush and 5 pass.

It wasn't until the 7th drive when we were stopped at the goal line. KM tackled for a loss, then a defensive holding on a pass attempt gave us a 1st again on the 2, almost a do over. 3rd play, KM arguably broke the plane on a 1st down, then got stuffed on a 2nd down. 3rd and 4th we went to the air and came away with nothing.

8th drive.... run, sack, sack, punt.
9th drive.... 5 passes, including 1 rush for 5 yards by Sam Brown. Punt.
10th drive... we suddenly discover KM and start rushing again. 4 rushes (15 yards), 5 passes (35 yards), and a TD
11th drive.... 2 minute drill.... 6 passes, 2 QB scrambles, TO on downs.

Overall, we ended with 44 pass plays (37 passes, 4 sacks, 3 scrambles), and 25 rush plays (22 handoffs to a RB, 14 of them on 1st down).

Since they reviewed it for Targeting couldn’t they also see he was pushed into the player by a Nebraska player and shouldn’t have been a Penalty at all ?
B1G Refs continue to screw us.

Nope. That penalty wasn’t reviewable, unfortunately.

I had to check for myself. Definitely BS call.
