SCARLET KNIGHT STATUE

Ha ha ha! I say "we'll be happy" as in those that regularly frequent this particular board. And that's coming from a guy that has never like the scale of the development that is surrounding the Knight itself (though I have no doubt the Yard retail and green space will be a popular spot). Now the masses of the RT or the dreaded free board are an entirely different story.

If I knew how to post photos I would post the progress on the wax model that the artist is developing ... Shield looks great

If you put it on facebook or twitter or such, right click, choose "copy image address". Click the image button in the posting interface and paste the image address there.

This is not the final pose as the shield will be held more forward . There is a large block letter R on the handle of the sword the plume is still not modeled on wax

You will not see it because the shield will obscure it
The current knight has it
Historically not a part of the knight armor

By the way, great job Cofifa! It's great to see that this is actually happening. Also love to see the signage and the new piers. This is exactly what College Ave. needed.

This is great, great stuff !! I'm hoping there will be a huge block R somewhere on this statue. On the sword might be cool if its large enough.

I think RU does itself a huge disseverice having multiple logos such as the crest, and all the others they've had over the years and are still seen around campus on old signs.

How tall is this statue planned to be? And where will it be planted? In the middle of the new development, off the street? Or closer to the street?

The visor still looks wrong, and the waist/skirt/leggings still look too feminine. See Leonard's pictures earlier in this thread. https://rutgers.forums.rivals.com/threads/scarlet-knight-statue.22737/page-4#post-1673079

I believe @Cofifa mentioned going for a "look" where you really can't see the knight's identity, yes?

Well with this visor you could see thru it and somebody could complain. I like the idea of the less is more with regard to the visor as others have said.

And agree on the skirt thing...too girly.

Agreed with all above. I like the sketch someone put in the link a bit more than the current wax model. My first thought on the wax model is that the legs look off and really disproportionately feminine to the rest of the Knight. Should have some armor on the legs.

And again .. gotta get the block R predominately on there somewhere.

All part of the process, but very very excited about this becoming a reality !!

The block R is the most recognized logo of Rutgers & has been used since the 1800s, which is why it's on the 1869 Birthplace statue at the stadium. IMO, It would be a mistake to not prominently use it on this scarlet knight statue on the chest (or shield but you already have the new 250 shield there). As for mascots, we've had the R on the chest of both mascots for a while now. It would look better & be more recognizable with the R on the chest since it won't be on the shield. You can always change the shield angle/location to make the R more noticeable. I would hope that you'd at least try it since it's still in the wax development phase.

I am fine with the R just being on the end of the sword as long as the visor and waist armor is fixed.

We already KNOW it's the Scarlet Knight just by it's presence.

The helmet should look more like this (with a different plume)

Here's an up close image of a similar style

the statue is 8' tall and will be bolted at sidewalk level. Final position is not fixed but it will boarder the lawn on the edge of the sidewalk.

The "Block R" has not. A block style R has been a part of Rutgers for years, but the Block R as a primary logo is relatively new, I believe 2001.

Yea honestly, if this is going to be THE knight for however many years and years to come, I think it pays to get the details right. Don't get me wrong, I think everyone is really appreciative of it and knows you guys and the artist are working hard. But it's true: The mask needs to be like the pictures people have posted already, the best one is the sketch from the link above to earlier in this thread, with the 2 eye slits and the bars below. The skirt and legs also are a little feminine. Also agree that the block R needs to be on the chest also, even if it's almost entirely blocked by the shield. And finally, the shield isn't correct, the top does not come to a point. Fix those things, and we'll be looking great!

I disagree with putting a Block R on the chest behind the shield. I think it would look funny and compete with the elements of the shield. I'm fine with the R at the top of the sword.

well the shield has been a big topic of discussion. I will recomend that we flatten out the shield

Love the concept but the wax model has chicken legs and the grill on the helmet is huge (it looks like a baleen whale eating krill). Hope some adjustments can be made, but will love it either way.

The Block R was on the FB unis in the 1800s. I don't care if we didn't make it an official logo until Schiano.

If that's the only block R on the Knight .... that's pretty disappointing. Really should have it prominently displayed either on the shield, or chest. The "hair/fur" coming out of the top of the helmet would look great in a bright bold scarlet.

What material is the actual statue going to be ? Stone? Some silver looking metal ?

This thing needs to SCREAM Rutgers all over it. It's going to be a very visible and hopefully famous landmark in the heart of campus.

Thanks Cofifa ... any background on the thinking behind choosing to/not to prominently display the block R somewhere on the Knight ?

It might look really cool across the chest in scarlet against the bronze of the rest of the armor & statue. Or even make it like a rustic bronze scarlet R that isn't as bold as the plume / shield but still is prominent.

the shield is the the University's new crest that celebrates the 250 th anniversary. the shield blocks the view of the chest. there will be a cape that will be put on the knight on game weekends.... student groups will be asked to participate in the robing ceremony the Robe will be adorned with the Block letter R

And that's enough IMO.

As I said earlier everybody will know it is the Scarlet Knight.

Find me a real looking knight with something like the Block R on it's chest and we can talk.

But we do need to come to an agreement on the visor. That does not work for a lot of us.

the visor is being tinkered with. i think part of the issue is the angle the photo was taken.
we not only gave them the armour we purchased as a model but we borrowed the head piece from the knight at the football games for the plume and he has the benefit of those photos

I think most will agree that is the visor look we are looking for and are used to seeing....

Well, if we're talking real knights, then we have bigger problems as none were scarlet. It's a mascot & both of ours have the R on the chest & 1 also has it on the shield. We've used the R in some form on mascots & athletics since the 1800s. No mascot or athletics program uses the 250 shield. If you show people the 250 shield & the R, they will know the R is Rutgers but most won't have a clue about the shield. Most people will have no clue what the statue is when they see people posting & sharing pics of it, but if it had a large R on it, then more people would be able to identify it with Rutgers.

And they both look a little cartoonish. Since as you say, they are mascots.

That is not the look @Cofifa and his gang are going for. Which is why it doesn't nor should it look like the guy who rolls around with the Dance Team. Even the one on horseback, while very cool for what it is, is a little too much.

Starting to get a "too many cooks" vibe here.
