Just drew this. I was thinking something along the lines of this: Base upper chest high.

Is it possible to move it back a little bit further? Where do you foresee this statue being placed? Or we could just allow Darwinism to select out the good photographers from the bad ones.

as an original block R guy, i feel like there have been some great points made on why it shouldn't included on the knight. i agree with you now.

I really do like the idea of the 17 R 66 on the base or the inclusion of the R in to a potential base. i think that would have a very epic feel to it.

Hey Cofifa, I think it's really great that you come to this board for suggestions. I just hope you have an actual team of somewhat experts on this type of thing consulting you and not just regular message board schmoes or interns.

I think the statue is an awesome idea, I just think it's extremely important to get this right as it will probably be a Rutgers icon for generations to come.

And please, please don't settle for something less than the best here.

As for a suggestion from a message board schmoe, I think it would be a great idea to have the Knight be posing as if he is about to lead a charge, sort of like in my avatar. He should have his sword raised above his head.

From how Cofifa describes the potential base, I am assuming it will be much wider than high (maybe 30 inches wide and 8 inches high). In this case the inscription on the base should be wider than high. Thus the word Rutgers would look better than just the letter R. A block R would work better on a square base or one that is taller than wide

Also, the inscription would need to follow Rutgers trademark requirements. The 17 R 66 logo does not use the Block R. It uses a different stylized R.

I would thinki need a base that is at least 2 feet high so it's not a tripping hazard

I would think the base to be 4-5 feet high so that the R is visible. It would also prevent people from hanging all over it or vandalizing it, at least to much lesser extent then if it was only 8 inches off the ground. I think the Trojan base is way to high for that space, it would be towering. 4-5 foot base 6-8 foot statue is only10-13 feet off the ground. That sparty statue is like 25 feet in the air.

@Cofifa ,

I don't think tommy the Trojan high is the best idea. Like Cofifa has said and I agree with this , we want people to be posing WITH the knight. I've stood next to tommy the Trojan and that's not the case. If it's too high then it doesn't become as much of a photo op type structure anymore. It becomes something u just take a picture of. 2 feet high base seems about right.

I think somewhere in the middle is probably the best, 4-5 feet, large enough to have the Rutgers R in the middle (17 R 66). 2 foot base with a statue will just look like a tall dude standing on the sidewalk as opposed to a statue. I also think with it being that close to the ground you are asking for trouble with drunk college kids walking around that area.

I have been following this conversation with great pleasure. Kudos to Cofifa for the work. For what its worth, I think the base should acknowledge the unique heritage of Rutgers as a colonial college. In my mind the base can have the block 'R" on one face, the 17 R 66 logo (the current academic logo) and the 1766 "Q" logo representing the colonial Rutgers. The remaining facet can remain blank or have a listing of highlights in university history.

Love what's happening on College Ave. What about inscribing the Rutgers Fight Song on the base:
R-U, Rah, Rah,
R-U, Rah, Rah,
Whoo-Raa, Whoo-Raa;
Rutgers Rah
Up-Stream Red Team;
Red Team Up-Stream
Rah, Rah,
Rutgers Rah!!

Splitting hairs here, but FWIW Maryland has 4 Testudo statues on campus. There's one in Byrd, one in front of Xfinity, one in front of the main library, and one in front of the alumni center. I think it'd be a great move for you guys. Its a major part of our culture. You can't walk past him and not rub his nose. I'm a big fan of schools having culturally significant statues.

Not to mention the numerous statues inside of buildings everywhere.

#freethebase ... after the season we are having we are all looking forward to a great unveil

Is anyone on campus to see/post a pic of the statue....couldn't make it to the game today :(
