To the middle aged RU fans behind the Minny Bench

Need more KYKs. Think the RAC pack or what they call themselves is doing this. I know my friend group did this while we were in school as well.

Yes well aware. I hate PSU as much as anyone but think that’s a real dumb chant especially since they own us on the football field.

At least those are immature college students doing that. Not a middle aged couple who you would expect better from.

I think if the player didn't care (he was smiling/laughing) then we shouldn't either. The couple didn't seem to be doing it with hatred, more like being playful. Not how I roll, but I don't think it's a big deal. I thought it was unusual, but then forgot about it.

He was smiling/laughing because Minnesota just took the lead and he knew he was getting under their skin when he turned around and they did that.

If this couple was caught on camera or tv both flipping the kid the bird you bet it would be on Barstool, Deadspin, NJ.com and ESPN right now and Rutgers would come out looking trashy.

Youre thinking too much about this. Do you know how many birds get thrown up at games around the country. This would be a non-story with maybe some tweets talkin shit about RU

I dunno in a world where our AD got lambasted for taking a sip of beer at a student tailgate you never know what gets blown out of proportion at Rutgers by the media.

I’m just surprised people are actually defending this behavior by 2 people in their 40s/50s or can’t see the difference between an 18 year old in college kid flipping the bird and a middle aged couple behind a bench both flipping off a kid because they’re not mature enough or can handle sitting behind an opposing bench when players turn around and chirp all the time.

I’m all for verbal ripping/ jeering as long as it’s not over the line but thought what I witnessed from that couple was ammature and if I was sitting next to them would have told them to grow the hell up.

Sometimes even the players find this stuff funny when it is good natured fun. I remember back when I was in school we played Georgetown and were getting beat pretty bad. They had one little white guard on the very end of the bench. We started chanting Rudy! Rudy! Rudy! And it caught on to the entire student section. The entire Georgetown bench was cracking up. When he got in the game the final minute everyone cheered and he was trying not to smile but the bench was dying

I bet every major college sporting event around the country has at least a hundred people doing the same stuff. Using stuff kids put out on Twitter for the world to see to get in their heads is good stuff. As said, as long as it doesn't cross the line than who cares.

As a student we would ride one player so much (even when it was dead quiet) we would usually get his own teammates laughing. Ah, the good old days!

PS - curse all you want just be clever, not vulgar, and keep off the family tragedy stuff.

I remember riding Khalid El-Amin about smoking weed and being roughly panda-shaped, and booing Troy Murphy every time he touched the ball for en entire game.

Call me a loser but I do my research before games. Ill look up like a bad loss these kids experienced in high school, and chirp them about that. I’ll look up and see some of their recent social media posts and quote that to them, the BEST is when theyre tweeting lame shit about being lonely and how a girl is givin them a hard time and just reciting their tweets to them word for word. It’s easy to get in these kids heads. The easiest way to do it, is to simply just literally repeat their own words and tell them truths
That's like psycho dookie stuff. Actually I used to do similar (assisted w memberships to court club in wenzel era). My personal favorite was after attending UNC where I accidently angered a fellow grad student from Nigeria? When I opened am umbrella indoors after it rained. I put that to good use the following year at RU. We were playing GW? with great center Yinka Dare-who happened to be from Nigeria...Boy was he p*ssed when I kept opening and closing my umbrella...

Remember Murphy and booing but not sure if I was there-may have been similar twice.

There’s no reason to cross the line into someone’s personal life. I got heckled plenty in my day and it’s part of being an athlete and so I’ve dealt out my share as well.

I once rode BJ Surhoff so hard when he was playing LF at Yankee stadium that at the end of the game he gave me the bird. I was sort of proud at the time but now it’s something I’m more embarrassed about and realize I was just a drunken buffoon. I think a large part of my realization has to do with now being a father of two boys and seeing how they are affected by that kind of stuff when they go to games.

Using profanity shows not only lack of class but also a lack of respect for your fellow fans who might not want to hear it or even think it’s funny. Stalking someone’s social media crosses a line that while I appreciate on some level, isn’t really acceptable behavior if you’re no longer a student. If you’ve graduated and are in the “real world”, it’s actually a bit creepy.
Such behavior is considered more normal at a college facility than Yankee stadium. You frankly were being a drunken a**wipe though as a former Yankees season ticket holder the Bronx cheer is expected. Within guidelines what you did at the RAC is great. I feel a tad different now that I'm older but the enemy is still the enemy.

DAMN RIGHT and it was one of the reason it was tough to win at the RAC in the early Wenzel years back to 1977.

An opponent saying something - sure. A large crowd chanting in unison - sure. One person in the stands on his own - no. You might annoy a player but you’re not going to affect his play.
ABSOLUTELY FALSE. After BC QB Brian Foley made his Rutgers toilet bowl comments to the media we played them days? later. I was 2 rows behind the BC bench in my pseudo RU season ticket in section 131 row 2 of the old GiantsStadium. I harassed him nonstop from the start. I'm pretty sure I had him in tears and 100% had him so rattled it affected the score and we were winning in an upset at the half. He adjusted at the half and BC rallied. However postgame Foley apologized via the media and noted he had p*ssed off fans who had let him have it. Really that was me and maybe 1-2 others really late.

That is so childish and stupid.

Best of Luck,
Groz
No it isn't. Rutgers is getting back to the point where a few plays dicate wins or losses-the 6th man may well dictate postseason or not. Let's put it this way. Dookies are the worst. About 25% of the student body is from our part of the country- from my high school the wealthy spoiled (will slip the religious reference that added here) kids of doctors and dentists who wouldn't be caught dead at middle class Rutgers. If Dookies can act like nuts so can RU fans and students!

Sorry people but Rutgers will never be associated with the word "classy". Why start now?

You would hate playing against me in anything competitive in that case. I’d be sure to have you wanting to take a swing at me within minutes
Can you leave the basketball baord and go to Nebraska as well? Oh wait you actually came back ina few months for football...Ok forget it, we're stuck with your 2 year old behavior and rants...oh well

As others have said, there’s a difference between student section and alums. Students are expected to get rowdy, be a little out there and push the boundaries of sportsmanship. They are peers so all in good fun. Also as others have said, booing Murphy or Celestand was also fair game, IMHO - they were visible athletes with a connection to RU and fans collectively gave them the business. I always thought the Luther (Wright) can’t read this or calling Danny Hurley a drunk were inappropriate. Again, I was an athlete and the skinny white kid who was an easy target for fans but understood it was part of the game and tried to use it as motivation to win and let my game do my talking. It would have been different if grown men were saying things from my personal life. Maybe it’s a different perspective for someone who has never played even in h.s.

For a 27 year old to be trying to “affect the game” via psychological warfare of social media research vs a kid who might be 18....works precisely because it’s not normal behavior. Nor does it seem to be “in good fun”. Where does it stop? Is DMing him ok? Seeing him outside on the bus? Going to his dormitory?

In the end, for me when I was around 27-28, I came to the realization I was no longer a student and not wanting to grow up but it was time to spend my energy elsewhere than harassing people at sporting events. It may have also had something to do with bringing my girlfriend to games and realizing it wasn’t less fun to just cheer. My guess is Kyk will come to a similar moment at some point.

By the way, this whole topic also has nothing to do with talking trash as a player...since you are a participant in that scenario. I still talk trash to this day at 45 in my weekly pickup game. I am obnoxious and it’s ridiculous given my skill set, but I enjoy it as do some of the guys I play against. We tend to give it to each other and those who don’t care for it get spared. Even then, if one of my friends’s teenage sons is playing we will have still have some fun but will filter it a bit. After all, we are “adults”.

Let’s call a spade a spade. With this particular individual it’s not about affecting the game or helping Rutgers. It’s about drawing attention to himself in whatever forum he finds himself. Sometimes it’s a message board, sometimes it’s a basketball arena. Mission accomplished.

But he altered the outcome of the game and it’s so easy to get in a 19 year old’s head and he’s a master at it and he should be cloned and bac’s game recaps alone aren’t enough and it was only friendly chirping.
