We should fire Pike after this year, however reality is he’ll get fired in March 2024

The biggest gripe i had with pike was his first 5.5 years he didnt run anything that resembled a half court offense. That has changed the past few weeks. Look at the action weve run recently and then look at the first 5.5 years. Its totally different and for the better.

not sure where the L is on JY. Weird that i never bumped that thread when they won 10 of 11 but you did the first time they lose and jy has a bad game. The obsession is odd

Bro we’re still running the pick and roll not stop with Paul and Cliff, which you blasted before. Nothing major has changed.

And you’ve bumped this thread throughout the past few months on nights when Young had good games. Please stop making $hit up that you don’t bump your own threads.

Let’s get back to the OP though - are you willing to retract your statement that Young was hosed and misused by Pikiell?

That was only one of your gripes. You know it. You griped equally that Pike hasn’t recruited enough talent and said we struggle to win four conference games. As usual, you know nothing!
I shouldve prefaced it with on court wise, yes. Recruiting remains an enormous concern for the program moving forward.

By Rutgers standards? He’s great.
By big ten standards? He's average at this point in time. He has the chance to prove me wrong though.
again haha you guys legitimately like want me to root against rutgers and not be happy that were winning lol

not at all. You were asked a question. And said we’ll see.

he’s been here 6 years. Certainly shown he’s an above average Coach I’d say

It seems like you lean glass half empty with Pikiell and glass half full with Schiano. They both seem like "high floor, low ceiling" coaches at this point. Do you think Schiano is just a better recruiter and more likely to get the job done?

Thankfully the last 4 games have given this team life. No unranked team has beaten 4 ranked teams in a row, ever. Predicting that would not have been wise, but it happened.

The team absolutely shit the bed in OOC. We were consistently in battles with crappy teams.

On the front end of the conference slate, we had 1 GREAT win, a BLOWOUT loss to Illinois, looked lifeless against Maryland and Penn St, lost to depleted Minn, looked TERRIBLE for the 1st half against NW.

This is simply not true. Your inability to admit that you are wrong is a personality flaw. I guess we all have our flaws . . . . .

Well, shit a little off the mark on this prediction I’d say, huh Zap?

10-5 in conference with at least 2 additional likely wins.
Yes I’d say so.😊
At the time I did not think we’d win a conference game.
I’m sorry now I felt that way, I’m so thrilled at the incredible emergence of our players I have nothing to say but I’ve been an RU fan for 50 years and I’m very happy I was wrong.
I still don’t understand the doxing and shaming of people you know in your heart are fanatic, caring fans, but that’s just my opinion

I'm curious what people mean by "low ceiling" - specifically when it comes to Pike. He's basically built a tourney level program for the past 3 seasons, is 31-24 in BIG conference play over that time. He's in contention for first place in the BIG this year and potentially a double bye in the BIG Tourney with 5 games to play. He's created high level fan excitement around the program to the point where it is a sellout pretty much every game.

Do we have the same expectations for Football and what are people's expectations regarding "High Ceiling" for both of these sports?

The Houston run last year should have been us. That's dumpsterfire to final 4 in 5 years.

We didn't win, but I don't know if you can blame Pike for Myles missing dunks and Geo dribbling the ball off his leg.

"Hey Myles when you get a dunk make sure it goes all the way in"

Kyk at least has shown up in the thread to take his medicine unlike madchuck who said worse things about Pike and has ghosted ever since
He showed up, but not to take his medicine.

Its not secret that im not the biggest pike fan as the head coach of a big ten program. He is a GREAT man but a very subpar basketball coach.

1) he doesnt recruit well enough for what this job requires
2) hes stuck in the 80’s with his coaching philosophy
3) he doesnt run an offense

the reason we should fire him after this season is because he refuses to adjust his mindset. Hes too afraid of hurting feelings of players rather than putting winning first. If you think this season is bad whats gonna happen next year when we lose our one player capable of scoring (ron)? Hes shown a reluctancy to really go hard at the transfer portal. Yes hes plugged a hole here and there but hes also turned down guys like jahvon quinerly and luther muhammad who wanted to come home! Think about that!

so what’ll now happen. This year we go 3-17 in big ten play and everyone is disappointed but says, “but guys he got us to the tourney and we hadnt been in 3 decades, give him some leash”. Thats just the loser mindset of this fan base because we have buried the bar of what we should expect here. Next year we follow it up with another awful season and now the noise is palpable but we punt the decision one more year. 2023-2024 season is the 3rd straight bad year and we have no choice but to make a coaching change and now the 2024 season starts with a new coach rebuilding taking a few years to get us back to the tourney where we should expect to be every year.

we could start the proper rebuild with a new coach next season but we all know it wont happen for both financial reasons and because of how low the bar is here. But this is inevitable, everyone sees whats coming but we’ll put it off and settle for having a bad team for more years than we need to. I’ll be sure to bump this in march 2024.

One name: Mike Boynton
Im fairly new to following RU hoops hardcore. Did quinerly and mohammed actually want to come to RU when they transferred?

If everyones realistic, we literally just did something that in the 100+ year history of the sport has never been done before. But everyone here is acting like we shouldve known wed do a 180. Again, im happy we did a 180, people are coming here acting like im gonna say, “nah bro we still suck” lol
“We” didn’t do shit! The man who you said would be 3-17 in conference this year and should be fired did it!

I still haven’t heard you man up and say you were wrong about Pike.

Or are you going to follow Donald Trump’s lead and never admit to being wrong or making a mistake?

Got to be honest. I never saw this team doing such a turn around. Amazingly glad they did though.

Thinking it over more it probably is premature to put the low ceiling label on Pike. I didn't necessarily mean that as an insult, just that I see a trend of bubbleish teams with decent, but not remarkable, recruiting.

The dude posts that he is right 95% of the time when he gives his evaluation on either a recruit or coach. He happens to be wrong 80% of the time. His opinion on Pike is a perfect example. He also claimed Robert Martin was better than Gus Edwards, Eugene sucked, Jonathan Taylor was no good, etc.

Pikiell has beaten the number 1 team and 4 other ranked teams all in a row in the same season. I wouldn't call that a low ceiling.

I think we can blame Pike for not hiring a dunking coach. Cliff missed 3 just in the last game! Someone call Darryl Dawkins.

Any objective and sane-minded individual would look at the recruiting and effort prior to the four game win streak and come to the same exact conclusions.

I’m thrilled they’re playing this well lately and love RU with a passion. But that doesn’t change the fact the effort for 70% of the season was piss poor, recruiting has been a disaster, and next season is terrifying.

Also, our work to get into the tournament this year isn’t done. I’d pump the brakes on the calling people out and celebrating. Let’s see this team finish. If they do, I’ll be as happy as anybody on this board.

Iowa and Michigan have a good chance of finishing the regular season at or below .500 in conference.

Iowa has a high net cause they beat up all the crappy teams on their schedule.

RU was left for dead after NW. A complete 180 against the hardest part of our schedule is not something a sane person would have predicted based on the play before our AMAZING 4 game win streak.

it has to be said...you're a moron

there's not one legit B1G puntid or coach who would call what Pike has done average by B1G standards

WE GET IT...you pulled your pants down...we laughed hysterically...and now you're using all kinds of excuses ... it's cold, you weren't ready, blah blah blah

just give it a rest man. you were wrong. WAYYYY wrong. own it.

Lol has a chance to prove me wrong. He’s literally wrong on everything. He thought JY was a NBA player, thought Pike couldn’t coach, Geo sucks, we are going to be awful next year. Blah blah

I agree actually that Pike has a low ceiling. I could see us reaching the national championship game this year, but we might not win it. Gonzaga will probably hit a 75-foot buzzer beater to win in OT. Sadly that’s a shortcoming of coach Pike.

I have to be honest - I never thought I would see a run like this in my lifetime. Even our better teams going back in my 46 years as a fan never did anything like this. I keep thinking I’m going to wake up, it’s a rainy Tuesday morning and FHJ is still coach.
