We've lost our minds with this hook and hold thing.

Washington/politics, the NFL refs, and now this latest crap...I feel bad for the next generation. I'm gone 15 to 25 (God willing). This stuff can't stand...
(Watching Wisky vs. Ill)

WTF happened to common sense. ?

Not only the call itself but the time it takes to review it.

Honestly, the "hook and hold" should always have been called a foul, and refs were just really bad at getting fooled.... so instead of training the refs to not fall for it, they increased the penalty as a deterrent and gave the refs a reason to check the monitors.

Tennessee kept the #1 ranking with a win last night arguably because of this call (with the added flagrant aspect built in).

I have an idea, but still not 100% sure on what a hook and hold is. And I'm a basketball enthusiast. Honestly, I don't even care to look into it. The time spent looking at replays for this is absurd. I'll fast forward if I'm on dvr, or just change the channel.

The whole concept of the "hook and hold" is to try to fool the ref into thinking the other player committed a foul - it's shady as hell and can cause injuries (see: Haas, Isaac), but became fairly popular because refs fell for it way more often than they should have.

Instead of just stamping it out as a point of emphasis, they went with a rule change - which seems like overkill to me, but maybe they just couldn't reliably get refs to call it without going to video.

I guess the idea is that, if you try to make the other guy look like he committed a foul, you should be penalized, but worse than a simple foul on yourself.....

it kind of makes sense...... a coach could put a scrub in, or someone not in serious foul trouble, and have him attempt this on a star player with a couple of fouls on himself already, trying to
limit the star

not the same thing, but I remember a long ago home game where a player picked a fight with James Bailey, soon after the game began.... I believe both were ejected, but the loss of a player much worse for RU.....we still won, but I always thought the situation was a set up.

Flop...unsportsmanlike penalty. 1 shot.
Just kidding, no thanks.

Hook n hold. Call the foul and move on. But not every little entanglement. JHC.

I think it's just that this type of trick is baffling referees in real time, and there's no confidence in them making the call without review. Maybe after a couple of seasons of this flagrant/review stuff, it'll help refs understand what to look for in real time and they can go back to calling it a common foul.

Really should be refs decision on whether it's truly dangerous. It's like when someone's hand grazes a QBs helmet and barely touches it but it's still 15 yards. A little common sense pleaseee
