What can Laviano do on Saturday to change your mind?

For all of the fans that know best. What would it take statistically and results wise to get you fully behind Laviano moving forward?

I think Laviano had a solid game against NSU. There are fans everywhere who always want the back-up because he represents a fantasy of what might be rather than living through/agonizing over the actual mistakes every Starting QB makes.

Keep winning is all that matters to me.

he only threw 4 passes and fans could easily question how important or not important they are now....there was one underthrown and one was a sideline screen, a very safe and easy pass.

anyway, what I would like to see is one or two deep passes that show strength and on target..... I already think he will complete a high
percentage of passes.... he might not throw many if we stay on the ground most of the time.

Simply WIN
no rocket science here
To enshrine Chris as the best QB ever... WIN the following week! Win big and he will be shown walking on water

Even though my choice would have been Rettig... I am fully behind Laviano. The coaches clearly have much more knowledge about what these players can do, and my "choice" is based on a very limited sample of their playing time. The coaches have seen many many hours of these kids practicing and playing under many situations, and I fully trust they know best. My eyes have only seen Rettig play 1 half of a real game and a portion of a spring game. Laviano only a little more. So I put my trust in the experts choice. My "choice" as well as every other fans choice is based on an extremely limited amount of data.

I'd like to see him throw to other receivers. We really don't know much about how he can look around the field as of yet. He barely passed at all last year and largely went to our best receiver against Norfolk. Locking on to one receiver has been a problem with RU quarterbacks in the past. It's something you can get away with against a team like Norfolk, but something that won't work against better teams.

Rettig looked good to me in scanning the field. I want to see Laviano do the same in the next game.

Don't need to change my mind on him - I don't think there was a "wrong" choice between the two, to be honest.

Personally, I'm just looking forward to seeing more from him. He looked comfortable within the offense, and there appeared to be chemistry there. Just want to see him complete the ball, and protect the ball.

It's doubtful McDaniels' game plan calls for 100% of the pass plays to go to Carroo, so we'll see Laviano spread it around more. Liked what I saw from Patton and Flanagan, and from Grant on the pass that got called back. Would like to see Agudosi get a little more involved in the offense, too.

No matter what, we're going to see a lot of rushing in this game until WSU shows they can stop it. It'll be wave after wave of fresh RBs pounding their line throughout the game, and I expect there to be some big ground gains later in the game as their DLine wears down.

Not being privy to the play design/strategy - it is difficult for any of us to determine if that was an underthrow caused by lack of arm strength, if it was a timing issue for the QB or WR, or if it was a designed underthrow. I indicated in another thread that we need to see more from Laviano to make a further determination. However he threw 4 passes all completions and 3 of them were for TD's. By any account that is at least a solid performance. For some reason fans want perfection (meaning every throw to be perfect and a guy never to make mistakes).....I just want wins,

We're playing one of the worst D's in college football. I'd reserve judgement until we start playing teams whose D's have a pulse. That being said, and I don't expect us to throw too much, but, don't look bad against this D, either, due to the aforementioned.

I have no opinion about who should start.

But this isn't a game to learn anything from a great game from either QB. WSU is a bad defensive team. Leach doesn't care about D.

He just has to "look" the part. Under throwing a wide open Carroo and throwing a bunch of 5 yard passes does nothing to sell me on him so far.

I'd like to see him scan the field quickly and throw lasers to receivers in stride. I don't care if the receiver is tightly covered as long as the receiver doesn't have to make some crazy adjustment to reel it in.

In the Eagles/Packers preseason game, Sam Bradford barely threw a pass over 15 yards but was throwing with great poise, precision, and anticipation.

That's what I'd like to see.

Some of you are setting up our QB (regardless of who that is) to fail, although it may not be your intention. We all want a perfect game w/a high completion rate and no interceptions. But both Laviano and Rettig are young QBs. They are going to make mistakes, sometimes ugly mistakes.

Incompletions and/or interceptions often happen for reasons that aren't readily apparent to fans. The QB might have made the exact right throw to the exact right spot but the receiver didn't break on time or at the right place or in the right direction. Without knowing the details of the play that was called, we could easily arrive at an incorrect conclusion based on what we see from our seats.

Conversely, lets say Laviano has a game in which he completes 100% of his passes, and runs for two touchdowns, and we destroy the WSU. That would be awesome, but it might mean that WSU sucked more than Laviano was great.

I saw Nova, in both his sopohmore and junior years, have games in which he made some throws that made a huge difference in winning the game. People were raving about how great he was. But what really happened is he made some bad, impatient decisions and threw into triple coverage and was incredibly lucky those same throws weren't picked off.

I guess what I'm saying is that, barring a Natale-like performance in which it's obvious that Laviano is lacking some critical skill required to play QB in D1 football, I think Flood's going to give him some space to fail and grow. We can argue over how much space he should be allowed, but expectations of near-perfect games is unrealistic. Would be great though, if it happens.

So maybe we could all try to be a little less bipolar in our support and try to show some perspective after the game, win or lose.

Ah, who am I kidding. If we lose, the board will melt down like it always does.

He can start placing the ball accurately, hitting receivers in stride consistently, spread the ball around hitting different recievers and place balls where only the receivers can get them. That's my main knock on him. If he shows all that, he should be the starter when you couple that with his knowledge and comfort of the offense.

Don't give points away (pick 6, INTs/Fumble on our side of the field), keep the chains moving, make big throws when necessary to win the game.

He'll make mistakes like any QB but its the moments when that matter and how bad. I don't think we need Laviano to carry this team. We'll be a run first offense and simply managing the game will suffice. But I'm sure he'll have to step up at times in this game and this year to win us some games. I don't care about the stats more about how the offense as a whole looks with him in there

Fully behind, as in convinced he would be better as our QB all year long (and into the future) than Rettig? That's a tall order, probably not possible in one game.

Fully confident in him as our starting QB the rest of the season? Show me:

1. Good decisions with the football. No boneheaded throws into triple coverage, no passes beyond the line of scrimmage, no running around carrying the ball like a loaf of bread. Throw it out of bounds rather than take a bad sack or put the ball up for grabs needlessly.

2. Going through his progressions when the main receiver is not open. If the play calls for Carroo as #1 option and he is double teamed while Patton is coming free on the other side of the field, get the ball to Patton.

3. Pocket awareness and a willingness to pull it down and use his legs to make a play when necessary.

That's all on the mental/football IQ side of things. On the physical side:

1. Arm strength - ability to stretch the field. We have four WR (at least!) that can go long on any given play with Carroo, Patton, Agudosi, and Grant. Our QB must be able to make that a legitimate weapon for when teams put eight in the box to stop the run. Let's see how that holds up when Patton and Carroo go deep on the sidelines in man coverage with only one safety back. If Laviano can make that work, I am sold.

2. Accuracy - catchable balls, preferably in stride.

3. Less important for sure, but being effective when he actually does run it.

Don't need to change my mind on him - I don't think there was a "wrong" choice between the two, to be honest.

Yes. If we have a lead in the second half how do we feel about Rettig coming in? I understand wanting to put the question to bed and establishing a leader, but I don't think I'd have a problem with it in this situation. I have thought for a long time, back to Schiano, that we needed some reps for whomever is #2.

Successfully run the offense, completion rate of 60%+, a couple of TD's and no INT's

These 2. Completing under 60% of the passes shouldn't be acceptable with modern offenses. I'd also like to see a YPA above 7.5 with that completion percentage. No interceptions that are his fault.

But this would be the same for me no matter who is the QB.

if Carroo scores on every catch, he doesn't need any other receivers lol

I'll be looking at his demeanor. He has to have a solid game of course, but I think the offense needs a leader. Paul James isn't even on the field for quite a bit of time. Caroo is great and probably awesome in the huddle, but when you get set you want to be within 5 feet of the guy. The offensive line doesn't have that stalwart either yet.

I'm a little terrified by everyone's asking for zero ints. Granted I did ask what would change your minds, so I think it's a fair answer, but these kids are going to throw pics. Heck, Rettig might have more HS ints than any all American QB ever.

So just to summarize....

In order to be impressed....people here are looking for Laviano to....

Have the accuracy of Peyton Manning
Have the release of Dan Marino
Be as smart as Joe Montana
Scramble like Fran Tarkenton
Have the arm strength of John Elway
Be as much of a leader as Johnny Unitas

Sounds pretty easy.

This is a cool thread except for the people who keep saying other people are saying he needs to be as good as these legendary football players. Noone has said anything like that... maybe 1 guy but it was a total joke and i think pretty clear that it was one.

If it's a runaway, yes. Not looking at switching QBs up with a 7-14 point lead. If it's 14 points, maybe go in for the last drive, or something - but even then, probably doubtful. I agree that the second QB needs game reps, but I don't want to switch up the on field chemistry if the game has not yet been decided.

Hopefully Rettig will get some late-game reps against Kansas and Indiana if we go up 3+ scores (and, hell, let's throw TTFP in there, while we're at it).

I was obviously being sarcastic in case you missed it. Read the thread again. There are several posters saying things like Zero Interceptions, Arm strength, Great Mobility, Consistently Hit Receivers in Stride, 4 TDs, Complete 60% of his passes, Good pocket awareness, Go through multiple progressions etc.

Laviano (like Rettig) is still essentially in his first year as a starting QB and these standards would make Laviano ready to be drafted in the first round. It's an impossible standard for any young QB to meet unless they are an all time great.

Look better than rettig looked last week.

But Its not a laviano issue- its a flood issue. Everyone should support the kid. Whether flood is playing favorites again will be another issue that some will unfortunately direct towards laviano.

More than amused that all the criteria you guys are spouting is the criteria that favored Dodd and yet the Novatards crucified the Dodd supporters. Now it really does appear completely opposite. Hard to figure.

If he plays next week at Penn State and plays reasonably well and we win, everyone will love him

Maybe, but QB love is a fleeting thing. I've seen people go from wanting to adopt the QB to wanting to have him drawn and quartered in the space of one play on this board.
