I've suspected it was part of a long term Big10 plan to spin/claim NYC as Big10 turf (as opposed to Cuse/ACC turf) and a conference game with the two closest and newest schools competing.

It was never for RU or MD's benefit directly but rather to help the conference marketing and geographic footprint overall, which was why Rutgers was added in the first place....but in the end RU didn't want to take the financial hit.

If it’s to develop the B1G footprint in the geographical region then let the B1G Conference get involve and give financial support. Having Rutgers foot the bill is ridiculous.

As it is the B1G has gained significant $$$ revenue ( thanks to Rutgers) from their Network expansion in cable households in the NY-NJ market . While RU gets screwed in Conference payouts versus its peers for several years.

#1 i was only speculating but yes, I think RU probably offered to 'take one for the team' as a new member, not realizing at the time how costly it would be.

But it is important for the Big10 and the ACC to sort of be the top conference in the city and JH probably agreed to help with that effort.
